He was on record being against many things... some of which he later delivered.

You have to admit, it helped maintain their secrecy.

Your comment is helping how? Anyways if it was cheap enough I wouldn't consider buying one for my kids to fight over. I have had problems with apps on Google not being compatible with my phone and would be worried about the 7 inch tablets having the same problem. I also wonder if Apple will have the same problems if their new phone and possibly this tablet are 16:9.
I'm assuming my compatabilty issue is a dpi problem.

apple would never do this if apps weren't compatible.

Hence why the resolution remains unchanged from ipad 1 and 2.

As a known weakness of iOS and strength of Android, is it hard to understand why?

And we were barely half a page in. Little early to call it a thread, eh?

For this thing to succeed, it better have the right price point. I'm talking 250 or so.

Hmm, I might actually pick one of these up over the Nexus 7. I always wanted a tablet, preferably an iPad, but it's just too expensive. If this is at $249 or even $299, I'll definitely consider it.

Too late now. WSJ is basically Apples PR outlet. Once they say their sources say its happening, it's happening.

Steve jobs contradicted himself all the time. http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/02/steve-jobs/

I think it's in vogue now to say Steve never would have done this when we just don't know.

They've already eviscerated the tablet market with the original iPad and they would leave competitors in complete ruin with a smaller tablet at a sub 300 dollar entry price.

If this ends up being $199 even the kindle fire will be in trouble.

I think it will be more in line with the following:
299 for 8GB / 399 for 16GB.

Still, this will hands down probably be the #1 item for X-mas, with the iPhone 5.

7 inch is just too close to a smartphone with a big screen. Oh well, people will buy whatever Apple creates these days.

edit: I love apple products but man...
It really is just an iPod Touch XL. Do you realize how popular the Touch is? This kind of tablet is likely aiming more at THAT market than anything else.

There's no way this will be under $300. Maybe $325 or $350, but $300 would put it within hitting distance of the iPod Touch.

Hell, even iPod Classic up here in Canada is $249.

IPad 2 is 399. No way this is only 50 cheaper. Apple doesn't do 25 pricing.

250 8 gb, 299 16 gb. There you go kids.

It won't be under 300, considering the ipod touch is so close in price this will probably be 349 if not higher.

Won't this be comparable to the Ipad3 tech wise? If so, that would be the one to look to figure out the price.

iPad 2 is the anomaly here. I could definitely see them marketing "well, you can get a retina 7" for $350 or a 10" non-retina for $400".

Also, I don't think they're worried about cannibalizing iPad 2 sales...

this is going to replace the ipad 2 in the product line.

you get 8" of non-retina for $250-300 or 10" of retina for $500.

Seems like a very easy differentiation, like Macbook Air vs Macbook Pro (once pros are all-retina).

Eventually, it'll replace the iPad 2, but they're still making revised chips for it...

I could see them just killing the iPod Touch with the debut of this. Given how many kids I know with Kindle Fires, it makes sense.

I doubt it. I think there will always be an iPod Touch that is related to the iPhone even if it is only the $199 model. They could bump that model to 16 GB or perhaps even give it a price cut.

It's quite simple really, the 7 inch form factor allows companies to make a device for much cheaper. Lots of people want iPads but some can't afford to (or don't want to) spend $500-600 on them. Now there'll be a more affordable solution for those people.

I don't think it's an ideal experience personally, but I'm sure it will sell like hotcakes.

Yep, basically what the iPod Mini was to the main iPod. Cheaper, held a lot less songs. Yet sold in massive numbers.

Apple is changing. I predict Apple will give in and make a special version of iPhone for China Mobile due to the unique TD-WCDMA 3g frequency China Mobile uses. Apple is getting beat up in China according to the newest numbers ( 18% vs 70% for smartphone sells).
