Set against the backdrop of a United Nations Space Command (UNSC) military academy, a group of highborn cadets are training to be the next generation of soldiers in the UNSC’s ongoing war with insurrectionists in the outer colonial planets. Among these cadets, Thomas Lasky struggles with his doubts about this war and with the burden of expectations he may not be able to carry. As Lasky comes to terms with his potential as a military leader, the terrifying alien alliance known as the Covenant arrives and turns his world upside down. Inspired by the Master Chief, he must decide what it means to be a hero. “Halo” fans who experience Lasky’s thrilling origin story in “Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” will be rewarded with special insights into the story of “Halo 4” and the “Halo Infinity Multiplayer” experience.

Cast and production team. Directed by Stewart Hendler (“H+,” “Sorority Row”) and written by Todd Helbing and Aaron Helbing (“Smallville,” “Spartacus”); “Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” features a diverse cast of established and up-and-coming Hollywood talent, including Tom Green (“Dance Academy”) as Thomas Lasky, Anna Popplewell (“The Chronicles of Narnia”) as Chyler Silva, Daniel Cudmore (“X2,” “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “The Twilight Saga”) as the Master Chief, Ayelet Zurer (“Angels & Demons,” “Munich”) as Mehaffey, Mike Dopud (“Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol”) as General Black, Enisha Brewster (“Footloose”) as April Orenski, Masam Holden (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Elizabethtown”) as Michael “Sully” Sullivan, Osric Chau (“2012”) as JJ Chen, Iain Belcher (“Supernatural”) as Vickers, and Kat De Lieva as Dimah.

“Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” is backed by a top-tier production team, including producers Lydia Antonini and Josh Feldman, former Warner Bros. and Playtone executives, respectively. Continuing its involvement with the “Halo” franchise, Legacy Effects (“The Hunger Games,” “The Avengers,” “Avatar”) is creating specialized costumes and armor, and visual effects are being designed by an award-winning team led by John Sullivan (“The Pacific”). Production services are provided by Herzog & Company.

I really want to like this, and I'm all for supporting branching out into new media, but this looks like a cheap fan film. The aesthetics of the weapons and armor just doesn't translate well into live action, especially with young pup recruits being the focus of the story. It goes from being a sci-fi version of An Officer and a Gentleman to random fanfic Chief showing up. Could be good, and I'll watch, but not impressed thus far.

Out of curiosity, how exactly will this be distributed? Will online sources be available? I didn't see a listing for any TV distributors.

And yeah, I hate to say it but some of it does look cheesy as hell. :x

Since it's filmed in Vancouver, can we get a series like BSG on tv? I'm excited

Episodic content in 5 pieces on Machinima and Halo Waypoint starting October 5th. The full version comes with the CE of the game.

To note, on the recruit's armor, it is training armor, which is why it looks a bit cheaper.

I wish the games were more reminiscent of the awesome marketing stuff leading up to every Halo launch. Bought to the hype twice and regretted it, not again.

This looks really good. Will definitely watch.

I know that feeling, but being that it's now 343 and not Bungie, and what 343 has said/shown has been a commitment to the fiction more than Bungie ever did I am willing to be excited again. :P

I see people's problems with the chiefs suit. It looks impractical and why would anyone wear such a suit. I think the only way to make it look more practical is to streamline it a lot and make it look slimmer.

We have to understand that there's a genetically altered 7ft man underneath. He can run around with a big suit.

I also agree with the above poster that the Halo aesthetic doesn't mesh well into real life with clunky uniforms and armor pads and helmets. But this is what they have to work with and I think they did a great job. The best we have seen yet.

I think if the Spartan suit was more like the Crysis suit than it would translate better to screen. But this is his suit and there's nothing like it.

So how does this tie into Halo 4? Are they going to say that humans ran into whatever was on the Forerunner planet in 4, 20 years ago?

Also weren't most of Chief's assignments top secret black ops missions?

I think it's both. I think it sets up the character Lasky for Halo 4. My guess is that Lasky ends up on the Infinity somehow as it is crashing/being sucked into Requiem , and he ends up playing a big role in helping MC get defeat whatever is on that planet.

EDIT:
Hey Frankie, will we be getting a video of the cinematic that was shown at the panel, or is that only for people that were present?

Well, he did say for the most part, I wouldn't be surprised if it concluded with some sort of direct link between the two fictional bubbles. They've already hinted that Downes is in this somewhere, which would indicate a jump in time at some point, perhaps onto the Forward Unto Dawn in the Halo 4 time period.

It's also heavily hinted that the main character Lasky will be an important part of the fiction going forwards.

I see. Ok that definitely makes more sense. However that only leaves two questions then, what are the enemies seen in the trailer as Covenant don't really make sense and Forerunner AI don't either? Also Master Chief's assignments were mostly black ops related pre-Covenant so why do we only see him and it seems there is a retcon issue somewhere.

chief's involvement is most certainly black ops. Big part of the fiction.

Liked the ODST and HALO Reach live trailer better than this one, the boy and girl thing was a bit too emo for my taste.

When you see the suit in action it looks great. It's the lighting and framing in the initial reveal in the doorway that kills it.

It's just the helmets really. I actually got a nostalgic Band of Brothers vibe from the wargames they were playing outside at least until the girl delivered that awful line. Need to watch that again.

Looks great, I'll still end up waiting for the cut that comes with the CE. I'd rather watch it all in one go on the big screen. It's going to have surround sound right? The music in that trailer sounded great.

I'm pretty sure I heard an Elite in the trailer. Did everyone know about the Covenant right after Harvest or was it kept secret for a time?

Not liking the "Chief!" worried comment.

Sounds like Transformers's "Optimus!" level of cheesiness.

Until Master Chief appears, the whole trailer reminds me very strongly of the first ST movie story (the one directed by Verhoeven)

Edit: I do believe that this is intentional. The similarity is kinda too obvious.
