The Last Remnant < $10 on GMG (Steam redeemable)
#1
![]() http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/us/e.../last-remnant/ 3.74 no more! Still hella cheap, though. If you've already used that one (one per account, I guess), another has been discovered:
[edit: posted before I saw this in the Steam Sale thread, but this is thread-worthy news to some, right?]

As nice as turbo mode is, it makes doing the critical triggers really difficult!

*Damn, I'm slow. Anyway, I have this on 360, haven't touched it yet. I actually didn't even mean to buy it, but I got it mixed up with Resonance of Fate somehow and voila, it's mine now. I've heard the PC version is a lot better, will grab it and leave the 360 version in the backlog.

What about the game is like Square's other games? The combat system is really unique, and the progression system is inherited from the SaGa games which certainly isn't "new era."

Compared to the rest of this generations console JRPGS it was good but not for me. Tales of Vesperia is the only PS360 jrpg that I would both call good, and also fun for me this generation. Compared to things like Persona 3, Persona 4, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2 I'd say Lost Odyssey is very poor. |

It's OK to not like the game. Most people didn't back when it came out. But it's nothing like any other game released by Square Enix this generation.

I don't think the story is bad (XIII level bad), but is definetly not remarkable. There's a few cool characters (Emma is the best female character in a JRPG in....years) but most of them follow the JRPG cliches by the book without nothing really interesting on them.
Most of the charm for the game definetly goes for the unique battle system and the different mechanics around it (character growth, battle formations, etc...). |

Emma is great, David is...okay.
Rest is meh. Story isn't insulting but it's not remarkable. I love this game to death, and it certainly isn't because of the story or characters. Uh....this game is nothing like FFXIII. At all.

But the area the game shines in is it's battle mechanics. Especially the large scale battles which get introduced about half way through the first disc. Never since FF Tactics have I experienced such epic battles with similar dramatic turns of tide. |

The character progression and battle rank mechanics can bit a bit complex. My simple advice to new players:
Don't fight (too many) battles where your moral bar starts fully blue. This will inflate your battle rank with only small stat ups. Try to fight battles where your moral bar starts fully red. This will give you many more stat ups without inflating your battle rank too much. There's a bit more to it than that, however. |

Ahh, I didn't realize they tweaked it. Once I figured out how to get the most of out BR in the 360 version I just brought the same idea to the PC version when I played it.

I remember playing the 360 version when it was first released and thinking the difficulty curve was all kinds of messed up - I kind of played myself into a corner very early on. You're saying the PC version is different (i.e. easier)? I've been sitting on the Steam version for many years, grabbed it during some old sale years back. |
