Nah. Raita at least has a decent understanding of perspective, though that's a bad angle to show off Selvaria's bosom. Liefield just isn't a good draftsman. At all.

Amazing isn't it. That's why they decided to drop this style and setting in the third game, rumors says that Sega decided to made the second game like this thinking in a broader audience but it backfire. There're few characters with interesting stories in the game (Mischlitt and Noel in my opinion) the rest of the characters have missions like: "find a flower that only grows once a year because you'll find your true love" or "Deal with the fan club of one of the students".

man, finding out the valkyria artist is a big old perv is kinda depressing. i always figured the terrible art for 2 was done by someone else and the pic in this thread really looked like fanart to me. i cracked open my art book finally as a result of this thread and the growlanser thread though and i'm reading things about how much he enjoys drawing mammary glands and how disappointed he was that a selvaria swimsuit scene was cut from the game. i never thought his art was kaneko/amano/kobayashi/terada level but geez dude, pull it together.

I still haven't finished reading the UDON Press artbook made for the original game. It's just so big and rich with information, and the way it's bound makes it a little too difficult to read comfortably.
Wait, that's Raita? As in Katawa Shoujo Raita? Huh, didn't know that.

I'm surprised Raita ever got the job. He is talented, though. The fact that he's in the H-doujinshi business doesn't detract from the fact that he knows his craft. Those illustrations and releases help pay the bills, after all. And most men like breasts, especially when drawing them is your job. He can't hate the job without his output decreasing immensely.

And, yeah, Raita apparently came up with the original concept for Katawa Shoujo. How odd.

Hold on, Raita came up with the whole high-concept of the game, or just drew the image for the proposal?

All artists are pervs. You don't think every single person that knows how to draw doesn't draw perverted things? Some are just more open about it, like this guy and George Kamitani.

One of the earliest works of Go Nagai (Mazinger Z creator) was a H comic, also Monkey Punch (Lupin's creator) and the Azumanga Daioh creator started with doujins so it isn't that rare.

Like 90% of what Go Nagai draws is close to porn (with a lot of it actually being porn). That doesn't make him any less important to the growth of manga and anime considered he basically created the magical girl and mecha genres.

Oh. I thought you were talking about Katawa Shoujo. Shit: no, Raita definitely didn't come up with the concept for Valkyria Chronicles. He came up with a little idea called Gallian Panzers, which was unrelated to the idea that the Overworks and RED Entertainment employees developed in private.

I barely understand it on older games, unless we are talking about how SD games hold up on HDTVs. Same goes for the trophy stuff. No trophies doesn't mean there isn't worthwhile goals and content to play through and trophies doesn't mean the objectives are any good. I hope those who enjoy trophies are still enjoying the game all that time.

There was nothing wrong at all with the story, it's like nowadays some people see anime characters and automatically shrug a game's storytelling off. VC is an awesome game with innovative gameplay, great graphics, nice story and excellent music. There are a few niggling issues here and there (lopsided balance progression, load times, scouts being overpowered) but games like this don't come around very often.

good SRPG. great story and characters. some fun unique gameplay aspects.

can be very slow.

antiquated presentation and features.

all you really have to do is level up 1 class to beat the game, which takes away a lot in my eyes.

no trophies. im not a trophy person at all. but y know this is one game I woulda liked them in to add longevity.

there are quite a few ingame trophies to get though some require more effort than others, the hard mode DLC is fun as well.

Its a shame as a game you are rewarded for just rushing the objective, rather than being strategic. To get A ranks etc you need to be quick so dashing for the finish line makes you neglect the great gameplay if you want the best scores possible.

Graphics are solid and hold up, but it's the artstyle that sells it. Gorgeous.

Fantastic Strategy RPG overall. Characters, story, and music were all great as well. Ranking system is the only thing I didn't like, as it encourages rushing through fights.

No trophies, but Valkyria Chronicles is absolutely worth a purchase. Trophies sure would be nice though, but....Sega.

What did you think were the cringe worthy moments in the story? Did you not like the beach scene? I like a few lighthearted moments like that, especially in a serious game. I like that style of goofy, out-of-place humor, especially since tons of games take themselves super seriously nowadays.

There's just some tropes that shine through, the token mascot, the main character and some clumsy moments like the birth in the tank and the subsequent conversations after the first mission that are a bit too cliche/corny imo.

As you say it sometimes just seems a bit out of place given the grim things that are going on around them.

That said, the story is ok, i just don't think it's a strength of the game. (which i really like btw.)

Alternatively, OP, ask yourself:

Do you gotta love nature? Do you follow up a brutal execution-style murder with a cheerful, disconnected "YES!"

If so, this is the game for you.

The childbirth scene and every emotional note they tried to hit comes to mind. I don't remember much of it today but I do recall being awfully bored whenever they wanted to display "the horrors of war". It's like someone took every bad, sappy war movie you ever saw and lifted the most cliched lines they could find and added a pig with wings.

Keep in mind though that most war movies are cringe worthy, as is most anime. Putting a war-themed anime in a video game means you're doomed from the start.
