Is this game about an epic war story or is it some generic harem high school anime? |

Amazing isn't it. That's why they decided to drop this style and setting in the third game, rumors says that Sega decided to made the second game like this thinking in a broader audience but it backfire. There're few characters with interesting stories in the game (Mischlitt and Noel in my opinion) the rest of the characters have missions like: "find a flower that only grows once a year because you'll find your true love" or "Deal with the fan club of one of the students".

man, finding out the valkyria artist is a big old perv is kinda depressing. i always figured the terrible art for 2 was done by someone else and the pic in this thread really looked like fanart to me. i cracked open my art book finally as a result of this thread and the growlanser thread though and i'm reading things about how much he enjoys drawing mammary glands and how disappointed he was that a selvaria swimsuit scene was cut from the game. i never thought his art was kaneko/amano/kobayashi/terada level but geez dude, pull it together.

I'm surprised Raita ever got the job. He is talented, though. The fact that he's in the H-doujinshi business doesn't detract from the fact that he knows his craft. Those illustrations and releases help pay the bills, after all. And most men like breasts, especially when drawing them is your job. He can't hate the job without his output decreasing immensely.
And, yeah, Raita apparently came up with the original concept for Katawa Shoujo. How odd. |

Huh, interesting. I assumed that he was a freelancer and that someone else in Sega came up with VC, and later they got him on the go.

Oh. I thought you were talking about Katawa Shoujo. Shit: no, Raita definitely didn't come up with the concept for Valkyria Chronicles. He came up with a little idea called Gallian Panzers, which was unrelated to the idea that the Overworks and RED Entertainment employees developed in private.

VC is very unique in both gameplay and presentation, worth trying even if you don't normally enjoy strategy games. Don't remember the demo being very good though.
I barely understand it on older games, unless we are talking about how SD games hold up on HDTVs. Same goes for the trophy stuff. No trophies doesn't mean there isn't worthwhile goals and content to play through and trophies doesn't mean the objectives are any good. I hope those who enjoy trophies are still enjoying the game all that time. |

good SRPG. great story and characters. some fun unique gameplay aspects.
can be very slow. antiquated presentation and features. all you really have to do is level up 1 class to beat the game, which takes away a lot in my eyes. no trophies. im not a trophy person at all. but y know this is one game I woulda liked them in to add longevity. |

I'm confused how is someone's desire to only play games with trophies a flaw with the video game industry? If anything it is a flaw with the community, not the industry as a whole.

Graphics are solid and hold up, but it's the artstyle that sells it. Gorgeous.
Fantastic Strategy RPG overall. Characters, story, and music were all great as well. Ranking system is the only thing I didn't like, as it encourages rushing through fights. No trophies, but Valkyria Chronicles is absolutely worth a purchase. Trophies sure would be nice though, but....Sega. |

It's a great game but based on your questions I'm going to go ahead and say it's probably not for you.

Is this how bad it’s gotten? Maybe I’m old fashioned, but what happened to playing games for their enjoyment than to gaining prestige?
OP, if you don’t play VC, and enjoy SRPGs, you are missing out one of the best SRPGs…ever. |

Trophies/achievements really fucked up gaming. I'm glad I've broken away from that mentality in recent months... so much time wasted on grindy trophies that add absolutely nothing to my gaming experience.
Rob Liefeld's shitty art is becoming a neogaf virus LOL. |

I never understand how is no achievement/ trophy being the major reason of a game breaker for a game you never played. Jesus man.
skip 2 and go for 3, that's for your own good. this. I love the art book.

As you say it sometimes just seems a bit out of place given the grim things that are going on around them. That said, the story is ok, i just don't think it's a strength of the game. (which i really like btw.) |

Alternatively, OP, ask yourself: Do you gotta love nature? Do you follow up a brutal execution-style murder with a cheerful, disconnected "YES!" If so, this is the game for you.

Keep in mind though that most war movies are cringe worthy, as is most anime. Putting a war-themed anime in a video game means you're doomed from the start. |
