So what pushes you to move forward in a linear shooter? The lack of content in the current area you're in?

This game punishes you for dying and rewards you for killing enemies. What game am I talking about?

The story, the challenge, the fun the player might have (for a shooter in particular, the various weapons and the difference between then that change how you fight), the achievements or collectables or unlockables the game might have.

Some of these apply to minecraft as well, but a little more loosely. Minecraft has achievements and there is potential for fun. The "goal" so to speak is the end game that was tacked on because of Terraria. Everything else is up to the play to supply.

Tested out v10 shaders. Very pretty.

Note: I'm using the default texture pack.

I like the look of that better than the other screenshots post. Maybe it's the texture pack I dislike and not the shader.

Too much glow effect; sheep blinds you etc. Shadowed areas too dark. Don't like the color filter that was added on top.

Would like to see this with the default texture pack.

It is like you took the skin of a sexy supermodel and wrapped a goat inside it.

The Fez thing looks nice though.

What do you think the mod community is for?

EDIT: An Example

EDIT #2: If it helps, think of Minecraft as a giant toolkit for a large community to build things with. That's not limited to buildings or new shaders; some have even built the equivalent of MMOs using Minecraft.

What's the end goal in Minecraft? To build? Then it's a sandbox/toy more than it is a game. Is it to get the best equipment? What do you want that for? To dig/kill things faster? Why are you doing that? What are you going to do with the things you gather from digging/killing? Build, probably. So it's more of a sandbox/toy than it is a game. It's a very roundabout building toy. It's a lot like a loot game where you keep trying to get better loot so you'll have lots of fun when you get to the real game - then it turns out the entire game was picking stuff up off the floor.

Suggesting that people who don't enjoy Minecraft must only enjoy dumb blockbuster games is pretty dumb too.

Minecraft has been looking this way for a while now. It wasn't this level of shaders but it certainly looked nice. I'm looking forward to what this update brings. Hopefully the performance hit wont be too big.

As of now there is a final goal, which is to kill a certain final boss.

Bdcraft texture pack + Tekkit modpack = heaven
The baseline minecraft is very barebones and there's little to do (full iron gear and you're a god to the monsters and you can dig everything but obsidian). But tekkit adds so much more stuff to dig and to craft you can have loads of fun. I'm currently working my way through to get my 2nd automated quarry to get set up, adding a second oil refinery to make more fuel for my combustion engines and creating an automated sorting, smelting and recycling facility for the quarry output.
I'm also entertaining the idea of futureproofing my power generation since I have no idea how long the lava lake that powers my thermal generator is going to last. Not to mention when I add more complicated machinery it probably won't even power them all. Still, the energy storage block will hold for a long while and they won't be used 24/7 so it'd still probably hold the load.

... maybe I'll build a nuclear reactor downriver. Don't have the capability to make the alloys needed yet. And I'd need to work out a good way to get the power to my compound since I don't want it too near in case of meltdown.

Why does a game require a narrative or set goals/challenges? I like Minecraft because it lets me make my own story and set my own goals.

It hearkens back to an older time where game design left some room for the players imagination to fill in the gaps.

Unmodded minecraft is mainly gaps.
