August NYC GAF Meetup: Fin de Verano Edition
#1
![]() Hello everyone. I'm sorry for my disappearance the past few days. Work has been unexpectantly busy the past few weeks and this past week was the busiest week we've had in years. I haven't had a lot of time to devote to focusing on the meetup. I apologize. On Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 7PM at least 30 of us will be eating at Madangsui in Koreatown at 35 West 35th St. For anyone of age, we'll probably trounce around the city's drinking establishments afterwards. I want to make it clear that the latter is not the focus of the meetup. Jipan made a suggestion that we should meetup at a second location prior to the meetup. I think this is a fantastic idea. We'd be able to exchange pleasantries with all 30 of us before the meetup and get to know everyone before we sit around an enormous table. If anyone has suggestions, feel free to post them between now and Wednesday. Please, please, please, if you have not told me you're going yet, do so within the next three days. It's vital you do or else you'll likely be left out for dinner. Either PM me or post in the thread. If I don't see a PM or post, you will not be in the party. Let's have a good time later this week. It should be a blast! ![]() Here's the list so far:

ohboyherewego!!
I vote for CP though, and Staten Island Ferry - since it's free. and nothing beats GAF on a BOAT. it'll be extremely nice to take the GAF outside of the seedy bars and clubs and do other shit for a change in the daylight. real nice

Central Park is a pretty good idea. Could we maybe get a Saturday afternoon picnic going there?

I'll be in NY from 8/29 through 9/3, which is Labor Day. I'd be able to join if it was on the 29th or 30th, or Labor Day. On the 29th I'm seeing the Beirut show in Central Park, on the 30th I have nothing planned yet, and then I'm going to Electric Zoo on Randall's Island from the 31st through the 2nd.
Alcohol-free, though? :( Coney Island would be cool, I haven't gone before and I've been considering going on one of those days anyway. Governors Island is a pretty cool place to meet up. You can rent a bicycles there (or bring your own) and ride around the perimeter getting an awesome view of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, and on Labor Day the rental is free for 1 hour. Otherwise there's the nice ferry ride to and from the island, and they always have various little events happening there. |

I'm down. Meeting NY-GAF last time was a blast. Korean BBQ or an arcade sounds like a good time on that list...neither of those would be particularly cheap, though. I'd be down to hit a ramen joint if anyone is down with that, normally prices don't get too bad.

The OP desperately needs a banner. I'll make one to the best of my Photoshop ability and post it soon. I'd be good on all 3 days. Traditionally, it seems that Saturday works best for everyone but I wouldn't rule out Sunday either since Sundays are typically more of a chill day. Then again, many people have to work the next day so that's why Saturday works.

Chuck E. Cheese? That would be pretty funny. We could always do Dave&Buster's aka the adult Chuck E. Cheese but there's not much to do there besides eat, drink, and play arcades (the Pacman multiplayer arcade requires four people to play it).
I got pretty drunk yesterday at my friend's wedding reception, so I dunno if I want to do that again. Bars are banned, but drinking is not. Restaurants serve alcohol and we could always bring bottles of it concealed to mix drinks in public places.

Also, if the August day ends up being the 31st I'd be able to hang out at night because Electric Zoo ends pretty early. |

It's not like alcohol is banned. It's not going to be the focal point of the meetup as it has been like the first few meetups this year. Drink if you'd like, but we're not going to a bar to do it.

I'm not in NYC, I'm in Toronto, but – why not meet somewhere on the High Line park walk? that would be pretty ideal I would think. Lots of spaces of different configurations to choose from, plus it's just cool up there. Find a location near some free wifi like an Apple Store and a quick jog down to a bar and you are set.

Uh huh, like you've always been. It's your loss buddy. To echo what Mully said, nobody's said anything about not drinking. We're just barring places that ask for ID. If you want to go to a bar, you're welcome to claim a date and host a sub meet up if enough people are down to do it. The main event of August is the non-bar hopping meet up as is. There's plenty of ways to have a fun meet up without resorting to going to bars in this big old city. Basically what -PXG- said; if we have an eat up early, then we can still go to a bar in the night if anything.

Count me in whenever if it's during a weekend.
May not be the best idea but have we considered a movie? NYC has a bunch of outdoor movie screenings in parks... they play music and everything and it's free. Unfortunately a lot of them are in Brooklyn and Queens but it's an idea to consider at least. http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/free_summer_movies Also, obviously, there's the regular movie theater. If we end up with a relatively small gathering and are all willing to pay 12 bucks... then again I'm not sure what movies will be playing at that time and it might be lame to have a meetup where we all sit quietly in a dark theater together for 2 hours. |

I can find out tomorrow when the work part is for sure. I wanna say it's on Sunday the 19th. Not 100% sure though. I'll report back tomorrow. |

I would suggest a Friday evening, August 4th meet up prior to the Labor Day weekend. This would be a good bar night. And would suit those working in the city during the week, and would avoid conflicting with people's labor day plans. Plus, anyone making a special trip into the city for the meet up could arrive prior to the expensive weekend rush.
Just a thought. |

Actually, I don't even like most alcohol. I only ever drink when I'm out with friends. My greatest secret! |
