Do You Feel Inclined to Keep Buying a Single Series on the Same Platform? #1

With the recent announcement of Mass Effect 3 on WiiU, and several other major series now going multi-platform, do you feel inclined to keep buying a series on the same platform?

I bought the original Mass Effect on 360 and was given Mass Effect 2 as a gift on PS3. I still haven't opened Mass Effect 2, as I can't buy the original game on the 360. I know I'll eventually get around to playing all three games, and really want to have the complete series on a single platform. Is this crazy, or do you guys do the same thing?

The same goes for other multi-platform games in my collection - Assassin's Creed, Final Fantasy, etc.

What about Final Fantasy? Final Fantasy has always been on a crazy number of platforms, and AC started multiplat.

Well, I'd certainly want that to be the case for Mass Effect (as well as any other game where there are actual benefits to playing the other games on the same platform), given that loading up save games was one of my favourite features of the franchise, and the fact that the default non-savegame choices you start with in ME3 are apparently bullshit. For other games, don't care at all of course. There's no compelling reason to play them all on the same platform for me.

Only MGS with Playstation, and games like Mass Effect that carry over saves.

Nope.

I have Portal on 360 and Portal 2 on PS3 (since it came with a Steam copy and looked a little better).

I have Dead Space on 360 and Dead Space 2 on PS3 (since it came with Extraction on PS3 and wasn't multiple discs).

I get whichever version runs/looks better or has additional perks.

The Mass Effect series is definitely one that benefits from being played on the same console. I played 1 on Xbox, got a red ring, bought 2 on PC, and later re-bought 1 on PC and played the first two over in prep for ME3.

I did play Assassin's Creed 1 on Xbox, 2 on PS3, and Brotherhood/Revelations both on PC (with a 360 controller).

I can't think of other instances, but I'd say I only feel inclined in cases where the save files transfer from one game to the next.

ME is kind of a special case though, as the story carries over. Normally, i'd just buy the best version of the game. I'd expect the best version of a series to remain constantly on the same console for the duration of that gen though.

I buy my games on whatever whatever device has the best performance. If the performances are the same, PS3. If the game saves carry over, then I will stick to the system in which I purchased the previous entry.

I do for controller support. I was debating on getting AC3 on WiiU but thought that I have played the previous 3 AssCreed games on a 360 controller so it may feel weird to do the shift so I'll just stick with the 360 version. They will be the same price so I'm not missing out.

Yup. But even though i want to i always end up flip flopping anyway. Games are sometimes too cheap on other platforms to pass up

Usually try too but like others have said it depends on performance. Or if I have a special edition or the saves transfer (Mass Effect) then I'll try and stick to that platform. For continuity I'll try and maintain them as well.

Presuming the games don't have saves that pass on, things of that nature, I don't have any allegiance to a platform based on a single series, especially not cross-generationally.

If FFXV is better on Xbox 3, that's where I'll play it. I think it just doesn't happen often, so people are naturally inclined to have collections that do adhere to a first party.

I won't make concessions for an inferior version.

However series don't normally flip flop in performance from game to game so it works out they're all on one console.

FF XIII on Xbox would have been weird though. Luckily it wasn't better than the ps3 version.

i like to keep it that way, but that's mainly because of how i organize my games.

Mass Effect probably isn't the best example given how your playthrough can carry over to the sequels

Only for a few series. Either there's incentives from game to game (Mass Effect), it's usually better on one platform than the others (Rockstar games until MP3), or it just doesn't seem right to me and the disadvantages are non-existent or nearly so (Resident Evil, Final Fantasy). Then there's occasionally something like controller preference mattering, I can't see myself really liking Dark Souls with the 360 controller, and 2D platformers generally default to PS3 if I can help it unless the D-Pad is actively squandered (Shank!).

Yes because they look nicer on my shelf. I am relatively picky about what platform that will be though and if one instalment is much better on the other platform or I end up to otherwise prefer playing it on that platform I might switch and double dip on the older game when it's cheap enough.

I think there's some incentive to keep to one platform if saves transfer or something like Darksiders 2 where you get some extra loot if you have achivments from a prior game though I'd like to see that kind of thing go cross platform. One of the reasons I tend to play alot of games on PC though, just in case.

Usually, yes. I always own every console and the way it usually plays out is if I buy the original for a certain console I stick with it throughout the series, if that's an option. It works best for shelf managment, also games in the same series don't change the controls a ton so it' snice to get used to one controller.

I'm not sure I follow. What platform does SMT have the biggest fanbase on? Are you talking about Devil Survivor being on DS/3DS? Or Persona games on PSP/Vita?

Not really for franchises no. Kinda just fell that way with Assassin's Creed. AC2 was $20 on 360 one day and I didn't want to deal with the PC version's DRM. Brotherhood was $35 on Black Friday but not on PC. They'll probably try to get me again with ACIII coming out a month late on the PC - probably after the 360 version goes down again on Black Friday, but I'll try to go PC. Might even pre-purchase.

Everything else has been developers and genres. Always get Valve games on PC, always get fighting games on PS3, etc.

The only IPs I've done that this gen is Mass Effect from 1-3 on 360 and all the Assassin's Creed games on PS3 (albeit, I have a Revelations promo from Ubisoft for 360 and a 360 copy of the original from a friend who hasn't called for it in years).

Yes, I like the keep the same series on the same platform. I usually buy 1 console each generation, with the exception of this generation (mainly because the Wii lacked in 3rd party games). I only recently learned how annoying splitting up a franchise into different platforms can be (for example, I bought Sonic Unleashed for 360 and bought Sonic Generations for PS3). It looks bad on my shelf and it sucks to have to plug in a different system if I want to marathon the different games in the series.

In MEs case, it was a big deal to get it all on 360 since that is where i started it and the saves carried over, but in most scenarios, like Assassins Creed or Resident Evil, I could care less. I will get whatever version is superior and/or cheaper

Games that allow DLC to be used across games, such as Rock Band, kind of forces your hand. I have hundreds of songs on 360, so I never even considered buying Rock Band 2, 3, whatever on PS3. That's one way to lock you into a platform.

Games that provide bonuses for detecting save games from the previous game, like Borderlands 2. I have Borderlands 1 GOTY on 360 and I'm going to get some kind of bonus because of having a BL1 savegame when I buy BL2, so I have no desire to buy BL2 on my PS3 because I want the bonus.

I see no reason to switch platforms (unless a version was mangled on a particular platform), and it looks nicer on the shelf if you have the same series with the same platform.
I got AC1 on PS3 before I had a 360, but thankfully the later games were nowhere near as buggy on PS3.

Hardly, I started playing Mass Effect 1 & 2 on the 360 but most of my time is spent on my PS3 now so I replayed 2 & 3 on that system instead.

Which was mostly worth it. Well except for 3, but it was actually cheaper to just buy ME2 on the PS3 all over again than buying all the DLC I didn't own on the 360 version. I actually didn't end up caring for any of the DLC =/ it all felt incredibly tacky and unpolished. I bought War for Cybertron for the 360 but I'll likely be continuing the series on the PS3 with FoC.

This is why, apart from them being "definitive" editions, I own a ton of Japanese Nippon Ichi PSP games.

I do this even if it's impossible. I HATE that I have 3 Panzer Dragoon games on a Sega system and then 1 on a system I dislike and that should have seen release on the Dreamcast. I'd have paid triple for a "Saturn"/Dreamcast version of Orta.
