Man, I don't think it has anything to do with class, and I think it has everything to do with her being excited. It's a fucking dance. Ryan Lochte lacks class by being a douchebag, have you anything poor to say about him? Anyway, the more I hear about it, the less I care. I just hadn't realized it was mainstream now. I'd seen people fucking around doing it, but I always assumed it was still stupid to do in front of the wrong people.

While the dance did originate from the crips and had ties to being a member of that gang for years I feel like it has become so mainstream in popular culture that it really doesnt have the same meaning or hold a strong effect like it once did.
A prime example is the fact that many people in this very thread did not even know that this "dance" originated from crips. Media will make a big deal out of this probably due to all the tie ins (Her being from Compton, Crips, sister death due to gang violence and that serena is black) but I really think it was a spur of the moment thing and she didnt mean anything by it. |

Serena may not be the classiest of tennis players (and I say this as a fan) but the dancing isn't a show of classlessness, IMO.
Case in point: Serena makes fun of a fellow tennis player, and the reporters laugh along with her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4DHC...R1MvyA#t=0m56s (it's hilarious though, lol)

Well show us some other athletes who did a dance after they won? I'd call them classless as well. It's more about lack of respect for a fellow athlete, than anything else. |

Serena Williams has gotten in trouble a lot for on-court behavior. At least from a hockey standpoint. Hockey players are constantly referred to as classless. Marchand, Carcillo, Crosby, Cooke, Avery. The list goes on. This isn't something that has to do with being a black athlete. Athletes who do controversial things are often subject to the "classless" word. I don't even know if I'd describe Serena's actions as classless. She shouldn't have done that specific dance on a national stage, but it isn't that egregious of an act. It has nothing to do with the way she plays tennis.

I miss the good endzone dances. :(
EDIT: I just don't see how a celebratory dance after a victory is disrespectful to the opponent unless you're up in their face with it or some nonsense. It's natural to be happy when you do well, and it's natural to dance when you feel happy. Lighten the fuck up, people. |

I think she's stupid and does things without thinking it through. Even though the dance is commonplace, you would think somebody who had a family member killed by the gang it's named after would think twice about doing it on a world stage. Serena clearly doesn't care so it doesn't really matter I guess.

It just depends on where you're from, and what you do. You dance, you party, and watch movies and music videos, and think it's just some cool dance. I don't dance, I don't party, and I don't keep up with mainstream culture, honestly. I spend my days hanging out in gang infested neighborhoods in Chicago (and a small bit of it volunteering in them), and my youth had a lot of gang instances (mainly due to friends in them). It's just our experiences and own opinions that will define how we view this. Thank you for respecting mine, and I'll respect your's. |

Awesome, another chance for folks to call a black athlete a thug, classless, etc
That being said, I have no problem with this and the controversy is laughable. She did a dance, she isn't condoning gang activity. Her sister got killed over that shit. |

our leading export is classlessness during the olympics. other countries just accept the douchebaggery at this point. we do it EVERY year the sad mofos getting styled on and the ones that can't dance |

Just so you know. You keep reaching back to the gang shit - nobody really gives that much of a fuck anymore. It'd be one thing if she started stacking, but she didn't. She two stepped and diddy bopped and it really means all of the same thing to many at that level. Call it ignorant. Say it affects you. Say that she should've had better judgement. But you're fucking the shit out of a chicken because the majority of people doing that dance couldn't care less about its origin. The gang shit affects me too and I still have the pleasure of getting shitty phone calls about cousins getting shot in stupid drivebys or having to send bail money home for all kinds of stupid reasons - but you gotta draw the line in your head about what is and what isn't worth getting mad about when it comes to stuff like this. Ignorance at all sides. |

I just really don't think you can take this behaviour as promoting a gang lifestyle or behaviour in any way shape or form, in either intent or effect.
