Are you a big spender or have lots of self control?
#1
I have a lot self control and don't really "enjoy" my money (vactions, wanted cars, "x" item, watching fav sports team playing live) but I do feel good about it because I don't like to owe or worry about "big" surprises from life.
Are some of you hell bent on being efficient/not wasteful and only buying what you want and need or you don't mind spending money for the hell of it? Is there a happy medium? I might be too boring or something lol...

If someone tells you that life is all about it's experiences then yep that's correct too and money needs to be spend to achieve that for the most part. Although you don't have to break the bank doing so |

I'm transitioning out of my irresponsible college-style spending habits into a more responsible adult-like approach to finances.
Specifically, I'm finally using a credit card the way you're supposed to - by paying it off in full at the end of every month instead of constantly carrying a balance. I'm still a big spender at times, but I save up for them, charge them to my credit card, and then pay them off immediately. |

My problem is I have a squirrel hoarding syndrome to money
I save, save, save, then when I think it's about right amount/time, I unleash the wealth, start the stockpiling again I do it on a wave basis Some months nothing, then 1-2 months shopping bonanza, always leave Best Buy during Black Friday like a fucking champ! My mom says that I'm like my father, he did the same thing, I never knew that about him Really weird habit |

I'm not a big spender, but once in a great while I go on huge binges. This year I've gone on two game-buying binges (3-4 games at once). I like to buy clothes, but most of the stuff I get is fairly cheap and and at least somewhat nice-looking. I love eating out, but I don't do it often.
In spite of my compulsions to do so, I often end up saving way more than I spend. I'm more compelled not to "feel" like I'm blowing through money than I am to buy shit I like--if I spend too much over a period of time I get all disappointed. That being said, generally not stingy about giving out small money things like paying for others' dinner occasionally, just have to remember something I learned from Judge Judy (harhar): "Never give up what you're not willing to part with." |

shit I dont spend money on anything anymore. in college I spent a lot. Once I realized I'd rather have a nice/early retirement than a bunch of shit I'd buy and not use I kinda shifted over to being frugal. I'm a tad extreme now but not too bad, I still buy games I want, but ones I'm pretty sure I'll play.

I realized I can be an emotional spender. I'm far more discretionary in my spending now, actually starting to put money into my savings account (~$500/mo.) but when I first started my career right out of college, I was buying things a lot more unnecessarily. Now I'm almost a penny pincher but every couple months or so I'll go on a binge where I'll spend a few hundred bucks more than I should, but luckily I still have the control to only buy what I can pay with cash.

Money comes in monthly Very miser-ish In my lifetime I must have bought 1 pair of sneakers @$100, was the white baby blue Shawn Kemp sneakers Everything shoe related has been < $20 an under Love Coscto an there classic $15 shoes, every 6-8 months, new size 13 pairs Same thing with clothes, my fatass @4XL+ you would think prices would be astronomical... they aren't Shirts are cheaper then their 2-3XL brethern Hell I have jackets/hoodies from Burlington Coat factory for $10, the fucking material in them is worth $20+ alone Don't drive, live in city, 1 <3 Mass Transit Technology is plateau, with some spikes I try my best not to be Day 1 on everything, it's been working out very well Also deals galore for tech, 6 months in shit is super cheap or have patience you get well rewarded Also have a little nest egg for Oh Shit, Emergency! Also I don't drink, do drugs, hang out (forever alone), any money oriented activities that get me out of the house (hermit-nation!), for me now movies went from monthly occurrence to once in a blue moon scenario (NYC-GAF can attest to this!) My vice is food =/

Besides building my own desktops every 2-3 years I don't really have big ticket items to spend money on.. My iPod 3G was one of my highest but I have abused the shit out of it, it's like my right hand. lol Also personally I don't mind spending on quality food at the supermarket at all. I don't buy any junk food/comfort shit at all (at the supermarket) but I do order Pizza about once a month.

I don't make a purchase if I don't have the funds for it. No putting purchases on my CC and paying interest. Also I have some bills that need to paid before anything else can be bought and I make sure those are taken care of. I'm a student and my credit score/rating is pretty much as good as it gets.

I'm naturally frugal, it doesn't require much self control (because I wouldn't really consider myself to have an abundance of that). I tend to have fairly specific goals, so I prefer to have money reserved for whatever I've designated as "important", which results in fewer but larger purchases, etc.

I've managed to limit myself to two games this year (well, 3 or 4 actually, but that Thief collection was cheap). Actually hating myself for that, i'm very bored but...)
What else i've bought... Eh, nothing. A book or two maybe. I'd say i have a lot of self-control. In most things. Have my weaknesses. |

I don't know, I like to save money over time to get stuff I want that's more expensive. It's tough, because I'm a tight-ass about some stuff (like eating out) sometimes, but I save up then splurge on larger (usually tech-related) stuff.

I used to buy games I wanted as they came out, but these days I'm alright waiting for sales or not playing them at all (game interest dwindling a bit). The way I spend has changed a bit too in recent years, less material goods in favour of going to dinner with friends once in a while, or something.
Edit; Day to day impulses are pretty bad though. Tim Horton's all the time.

Currently saving for a downpayment on a house, so I try to put away 1k a month. Pack a lunch, cook/drink at home, dont waste money on little things which add up quickly is the best tip I have for people that want to save. My wife or I get paid every Friday, so if we have a 5 paycheck month we put that extra toward vacation funds.

I prefer the $1 can of Arizona teas since they're pretty much everywhere. Some times they go on sale for 3 for $2 or something and I can't say no.

Self control mostly. Sometimes I'll splurge and get a few very expensive things at once, but I usually do not, those are rare situations.

After I drink 'zona, my throat really itches, and cough up brown looking flems Tropical Fantasy doesn't do that to me, neither does Snapple or Lipton I think I have spent more money fixing my PS3's then buying games for it =/ (4 in total paid for $99-$149, a 5th one is looming, but I'm delaying it for the time being) |

Yeah.....I'm fairly bad at spending, but my Wife is fucking awesome at not spending. So she has control of the checkbook. I can generally buy whatever I want, but if it's more than a couple hundred bucks I need to check with her first, she brings me back to earth...lol

When I'm relaxed and content about my life and how things are going, I tend to save up a lot. When I'm bored or unhappy with the state of things in my life, I shop excessively to fill in the voids.
I've been running in the red a lot lately. :/ |
