having the title of "potentially the fastest man in the world" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

After the 1996 olympics, The 100m race World Record Holder, Donovan Bailey, raced Michael Johnson(200m and 400m Olympic winner) in a 150m race to see who was the fastest man on the planet.

Here is the result:

At the olympic stadium in Montreal.

yeah but he won't be able to compete with the next generation of sprinters at 29

Blake almost beat him today (and has beaten him before) and he's going to be where Bolt is now.

unless they're running 100m in like 8 seconds somehow you'd never know without proper timing equipment and a real track.

That brings up a legitimate point. For what distance? And why do we use 100m as the measurement for fastest man.

Why not ? Donovan Bailey won Gold when he was 29. Michael Johnson won at 32-33 y.o, in Sydney. Gatlin won bronze at 30 today.

I'd assume because Bolt has the fastest clocked speed of any man on the planet. It's not the time he covers 100m it's the speed he can get up to.

There's probably someone who just didn't have the training/chance. But they wouldn't be the fastest, they'd just have the potential to be.

100-200m seems like the most reasonable bet because outside of that we'd be looking at distances where compensations due to depleting stamina become a factor or, incredible reaction time on the lower end.

Just looking at top speed, he seems to be the fastest which should be the true test, logically speaking

It's pretty clear imo. Although just winning the 100m wouldn't suggest that entirely

Well the olympics are pretty much the best way to tell the fastest man, and Usain beasts everyone, so i think its fair to call him the fastest man alive.

But deep down we all know who the fastest man alive is:

I'm beyond confident there is probably some 5 year old that can run faster than Bolt. Many kids seem to have some kind of superman gene that makes them almost impossible to catch if they run off.

Typically, the fastest time to distance ratio has been at 100m, one of the few times this wasn't the case was when Michael Johnson was the 200m world record holder.

Indoors they also race the 60m but the times are not nearly as good. Maurice Greene has the world record with 6.31 seconds.
