Blah, now instead of people detracting the PC sales because of retail sales they will do it because '80% was at discounted price'. As if console games don't get slashed. How cheap has Metro 2033 for 360 gotten in the past 2 years?

Don't pull the shit you did with Metro for the sequel.

You know what I am talking about. The Ranger mode (only good way to play the game) being release long after the game came out.

I really hope they improve the gameplay in the sequel. 2033 had a nice atmosphere but that was practically the only thing holding it up.

Personally I think 1 million copies for a FPS with awesome graphics and great gameplay (admittedly with some problems, but still solid) is just... a joke, way too few to be happy. But for some people apparently it's a threshold that if passed, is a testament of good sales... :-/
A game going platinum is good.
A game with little advertising going platinum is damn good.
A game from an unknown developer going platinum is absolutely great.
A "niche" First Person Shooter going platinum when going up againsts established series like Battlefield, Assassins Creed, Final Fantasy, Yakuza, Command & Conquer and Dawn of War is absolutely astounding.

These numbers might not shock you, but i think you are vastly overblowing the number of "gamers"
You are definitely overblowing the number of "gamers" who Metro 2033 caters to.

No, not really. One cool thing about Metro 2033 was the real time light sources, killing the lights before advancing was really cool, particularly in those Nazi base levels.

Overall it was an ok game...I played it once and beat it in 8 hours. Looking forward to Metro 2034

It should have sold a lot more. Metro is one of the most unique shooters in gaming history. And perhaps the closest thing to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I just hope that Last Light is a hit for THQ. 4A games need only one hit on their hands to be on par with the AAA developers of the world. Imagine just for a second a Metro game with the same resources that say a game like Half-Life 2, or Halo would get. Just thinking about it, sends chills down my spine.

In the end of the day, after publishers cuts and whatnot, devs still get ~1/4th~1/5th of what they got from each day-one copy.

A developer could get the same money from a $15~$20 game they get from a $60 game if they could take out the publisher and retail costs.

I just installed this yesterday and played a few hours. Really good game. The graphics are phenominal and I am on low settings 1400x900, I am guessing they would be much better not on a laptop. Anyways I am glad it did so well and I am looking forward for the next one. Pretty much make a game in a post apocalyptic setting and I will buy it day 1.

The retail version is a bit more than 10 Pounds on Amazon, double the price of the retail PC version there.

I'm sure that the game's reputation of being one of, if not the, most demanding games out there (hardware wise) helped it to sell so much.

A sale is a sale, however. The more people that actually buy it, the more people that recognize the brand, thus increasing the likelihood of them purchasing the sequel at a higher price. (This includes me, who bought the first one for 75% off and can't wait for Last Light)

This reminds me that I need to give Ranger Mode a go. Sounds pretty dope.

Eh, I was just going to point this.
People still downplay games sold for discounted prices on the digital market, but these games sell without any distribution cost beside bandwidth, making them almost pure profit, and the publisher takes a way larger cut of the total price.

From the top management of 1C:

Quote:
by Ben Parfitt
Friday, November 26th 2010

As a generalisation, retail would pay these guys a maximum of 40 per cent of what they made. So on a £29.99 game the publisher would receive about £12 (and on a sub-licensed deal, we would then only get about £4.25 of that) – minus return, write down and consignment costs.

When would we get that money? Well, payment would be by the end of the quarter.
So, let’s say £10 per unit sale goes to the publisher, £3 to the developer/sub-licensor, and it’s in your bank five months after the customer has paid out £30.
Compare that to the digital model. On a £29.99 sale, the digital partner will pay the publisher – or in many cases direct to the developer – between 60 and 70 per cent, by the end of the month following the sale.

Wow. To recap: on a sale over the counter today, we can have our £3 by the end of March, or on a digital sale, we can have £20 by Christmas.

Remind me why we should choose to go with retail and decline to let Steam sell the game?

I played Metro 2033 for the first time this year and I absolutely adored it. 1 million copies is great for a game like this even if most of those copies were sold at a lower price. As far as I know 2033 is a very low budget game for an FPS so they should have easily made a profit on the game. Can't wait for Last Light.

Well like the CEO says in the link, even at low level sales they'll still get a profit. They sure didn't get a budget you'd expect for that kind of game
