This site seems to do its diligence in identifying ROMs but I'm still not sold. The sound sample compression seems pretty different from what actually shipped. There's even some sibilance and audio tail which would have been filtered to hell and cut to the bare minimum in order to fit on a SNES cart. (Compare the "He's On Fucking Fire" MP3 to the "He's On Fire" in the real game, it's so filtered and cut down in the game it's almost a phonetic assemblage of sounds.) The Acclaim versions of Jam weren't at all consistent in audio handling (some sounds are slowed down, some are much more compressed than others) but the sound quality here is just too good compare to what people paid for. So, was this "XXX" version done later when they had better sound compression algorithms? (Tournament seemed to have better audio, but this isn't running on Tournament.) Was this stored on a bigger ROM to keep that unsquished sound? (But the article says that the dump is only 11k different, so was the sound stored on a different EPROM and not counted in the article?) I'm not saying it's an April Fools fake cart, but I don't get how or when this was made? Maybe the voice samples were done for Jam but the SNES "XXX" build was done later and not immediately as as launch joke as the article seems to indicate? (EDIT - Kotaku did some investigation and got a sourced answer to it being fake... but they seem to have missed the point. This isn't a YT hack, according to NintendoPlayer at least, it's a real playable ROM. Not that a SNES ROM couldn't be hacked or that somebody couldn't parody Kitzrow but not EVERYTHING about this story stinks... I don't know what to think.)

Like I said, something smells fishy here, but I don't think the entire story stinks. There's probably more to it than just a big "FU internet believers" from NintendoPlayer, but who knows if Mike and Lisker will be able to explain the situation.

The NintendoPlayer guy usually posts over at the Lost Levels.org forums (same people that released Bio Force Ape and dozens of other prototype dumps) and is more or less a verified dude by the staff there, so unless he was tricked himself I have little reason not to believe his story. The ROM was posted on their forums as well.
One for is for sure, I ain't ever putting Kotaku's words as my truth to follow, on anything. |
