I actually really like this one, and it was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this thread before I decided to go with a joke answer. I didn't even know it was from a show the first time I heard it. It just makes a lot of sense and helps the world seem a little less nihilistic.

Yeah, I've watched Angel since then.
It was totally one of those, "HOLY SHIT THAT'S WHERE IT'S FROM!" moments. I'd just thought the guy who originally told it to me was really deep. |

I always cringe when I have to tell people it's from a tv show, because THEN they start rolling their eyes. Does it change what it means? Grr.

My, philosophy is, basically this. And this is something that I live by. And I always have. And I always will. Don't, ever, for any reason, do anything, to anyone, for any reason, ever, no matter what, no matter where, or who or who you are with, or or where you are going, or, or where you've been. Ever. For any reason. Whatsoever.

"I appeal from your customs. I must be myself. I cannot break myself any longer for you, or you. If you can love me for what I am, we shall be the happier. If you cannot, I will still seek to deserve that you should. I will not hide my tastes or aversions. I will so trust that what is deep is holy, that I will do strongly before the sun and moon whatever inly rejoices me, and the heart appoints. If you are noble, I will love you; if you are not, I will not hurt you and
myself by hypocritical attentions. If you are true, but not in the same truth with me, cleave to your companions; I will seek my own" -Ralph Waldo Emerson |

I don't have one in particular that sums up everything. I agree with Opiate that life is too complex to be summarized in a single aphorism, though I do remember Marcus Aurelius' Meditations as having quite a few that I enjoyed.
And to name something else, I have particularly enjoyed this line by Goethe: "One ought, every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and, if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words." |
