The Macbook Pro Retina is one hell of a games machine
#1
I replaced last years 13" MBP this week with a Retina and it's blown me away in an area I did not expect, gaming.
I have a decent gaming PC with a big monitor with a high resolution and my Mac has always been for "lite" gaming (in OSX or Bootcamp) I needed the extra power for work but I didn't realise how much this thing screams. DoTA2, Orcs Must Die 2, TF2, Diablo 3, Star Craft 2 & Even Tribes scream along. Fantastic Fantastic machine, (should have made a bigger boot camp partition) edit: I'm impressed by the fact its in 2880 x 1800 on high. Specs: http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/

It gets hot after a while running games.
It's faster than my desktop tho. All the games I mentioned bar tribes run fine native res on highest, DoTA2 looks stunning. Tribes I'm running maxed but on a lower res to get a nice fluid frame rate. I got it for work but it's a great bonus, the hard drive loading is lighting also, I'm a SSD convert now. I'd have checked it on Arma 2 but I didn't make the boot camp partition big enough. |

But yeah I'd imagine it'd be nearly impossible to get good framerates on high-end games. If my Crossfire setup struggles with 1600x2560 then I can't imagine a notebook with higher res would fare very well. I guess the bright side is high-end PC is becoming less common. |

I have an early 2009 MBP which runs all of the games you described. I haven't had a whole lot of trouble running anything I have tried except for D3. Which for some reason I need to dial the res back for.
And no, these things are not suitable for SCII unless you get an external mouse and keyboard. These things turn into Frying pans. |

I concur. Been playing Alan Wake and BF3 in 720p and 1080p respectively on my TV and it's damn great. Everything on High, effects even on Ultra, and runs at a good clip, 30-60FPS.
You really don't expect such perfornace out of a small, sleek device like this. Of course, stuff looks amazing when played on its own screen too, but it's just so easy to carry it to a TV, plug HDMI, lean back on sofa and with a controller :) Oh, and: ![]() Feels good man. That's running Dolphin. Fairly rock solid 60FPS in 1080p, the thing is freaking versatile, I finally don't need a dedicated vertical setup. Just to make it clear, most other games I tried in Dolphin didn't run that well, but Ikaruga does.

It comes with a mid range mobile GPU so it can run that overblown screen that will only kill your fps with no gain. You could get dual top of the line mobile GPU laptop for the same price. Yes you can not upgrade RAM in the mac they now melt it to the board. Apples business is selling you something that they fully control its their business strategy. Its a good strategy for a business.
Its a great machine for developing apps to sell to those lemmings though. I do love it for that. |

It actually looks pretty good. I don't know the tech behind it but it doesn't get ugly as shit like Windows does when you use a non-native resolution.

It runs at 1440x900 but at double to give the Retina effect. This is a workaround to run the Mac at the actual 2880x1800, but it all becomes really tiny.
