I created a top five for a friend who'd never seen much of the show.
1. Cape Feare 2. Homer at the Bat 3. Who Shot Mr. Burns Part One 4. Last Exit From Springfield 5. You Only Move Twice I've watched most episodes in the series multiple times and I feel pretty good about this list. Lemon of Troy is also an excellent contender. |

One of my personal favourites (if not #1 on my list) is Homer the Vigilante.
Homer: (smug) So it seems the cat, has been caught by the very person who was trying to catch him. Skinner: How ironic. Then the stats with Kent, and the ending "we'll dig our way out!" "no no, dig up, stupid!". Episode was full of classic moments. |

You could make an argument for a huge amount of episodes from the early seasons. My opinion changes from time to time on this, but right now my favourite is You Only Move Twice. Hank Scorpio is the best one-off character by far. But I could watch Cape Feare, Homer the Vigilante, or something else and then that would be my favourite. Too many classic episodes to choose from.

Homer's Enemy is the best episode!
Grimes: I have had to work hard everyday of my life and what do I have to show for it? This briefcase and this haircut! And what do you have to show for you lifetime of sloth and ignorance? Homer: What? Grimes: Everything! A dream house, two cars, a beautiful wife, a son who owns a factory, fancy clothes, and (sniffs) lobsters for dinner! Ha ha! |

I'll have to think about this topic more, but I love Summer of 4ft.2. I've recently thought about it being the best Simpsons episode of the series. Watched it like 3 times in the last few months.
Lisa's Substitute's up there too. Lisa episodes are sometimes unbearable, but in the better episodes she's the most relatable character, and makes the family contrast and stand out even more. Also love Flaming Moes, Homer the Heretic, Lisa on Ice, The Way We Was, And Maggie Makes Three, and Treehouse of Horror V & VI. They're all so perfectly packed, without a wasted scene.
