It Hits the Fan episode of South Park aired June 20th, 2001. Later in 2007, Le Petit Tourette similarly used the word without censor.
During an episode of The Daily Show this year, Matt and Trey discussed that they managed to convince Comedy Central to just "give" them shit, and they agreed. Jon Stewart said that his show has tried that, but CC wasn't okay with it, as the show is replayed in the morning, and apparently they were worried about offending an earlier audience. I don't know for sure, but I would say that it was around season 13 (March 2009) where "shit" began to occur regularly on the show. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was one of the first shows I noticed to begin using it. It's been airing since August 2005. Breaking Bad commonly uses the word, and it's been airing since January 2008. I think Comedy Central's "Secret Stash" block where they would play movies with uncensored audio after a certain hour got the ball rolling. I mean, they still do this, but without the fanfare, which kind of shows the progress. |

You sure? In episode 9 or 10 last season Jesse said "Get the fuck out of my house and don't come back" or whatever, I could've sworn that was uncensored. I hope I'm not going crazy.
edit: looks like you're right. That's a dumb rule imo, if it's still fully censored/muted like that they should be allowed to say it more than once a season.

"shit" on cable shows has been common for years though. shows like The Shield and Rescue Me did it throughout their runs, if i'm remembering correctly The weird thing is, my season 2 blu ray has a censored Fuck in it. I don't understand why, its not censored on any of my other blu rays for any of the other seasons and from what I can tell it's not supposed to be |

On cable, it really comes down to what sponsors will accept. Cable-only networks can show whatever the hell they want, as long as they don't have companies pulling advertising out of fear of being associated with something unseemly. HBO, Showtime, and all the other premium channels don't have sponsors to answer to, so they up the ante and throw in all the tits and ass too.
I wouldn't be surprised if in another 10 years you'll get to see HBO shows like True Blood uncensored on FX or whatever, after their first run on their premium channel. |

They showed Harvey giving the finger on Suits, but they positioned it so that it was just barely within the screen :lol
Even though they say "shit" on the show, the CC's leave it out, and I think it's taken out during the daytime repeats. |

That whole South Park episode was in response to the first use on NYPD Blue. They just took the response to the logical satirical extreme.

Also a funny censor I remember from a long time ago, was "where did you get that scar from? Eating pineapple?" instead of eating pussy. It was in Scarface of course. |

I find it weird how freedom of speech is held in such a high regard people will go to lengths to defend the Westboro Baptist Church's ability to spout their hatred at the most insensible moments, yet American tv censorship is so strict. Not trying to stir up any nationalistic shit, but that always felt off to me.

![]() We've come a long way (up or down, depending on your point of view), certainly. I remember there was a big controversy about the short-lived "Uncle Buck" TV series in 1990 because one of the kids on the show said "you suck" to her brother in the first episode.

Even better is during the scene in the control tower, they remove all of Willis's dialogue, so he just goes off, sounding like Tommy Wiseau.

I'm not joking, this isn't a HERP DERP AMERICA SO DUMB thing, the interplay between free speech and censorship and cultural norms of "decency" or "obscenity" is a thing that the courts and legislature have had to weigh in on regularly. Did you know, for example, that the rules for cable TV and broadcast TV are really different? Did you know why that is? |
