Under these circumstances where Patrick is obviously viewed as a valuable employee and the company can function without him being there for an extended period. But a lot of American companies fire low skilled workers at the drop of a hat because at-will employment laws let them.

10 days of annual vacation and three days of bereavement leave is standard here, and if you're fairly easy to replace and you try and go over those limits then you will more than likely be fired.
