LTTP: The Raid: Redemption #1

Quote:
Deep in the heart of Jakarta's slums lies an impenetrable derelict apartment building which became a safe house for the city's most dangerous murderers, killers and gangsters. The rundown apartment block has been considered untouchable by rivals of the notorious crime lord Tama Riyadi and even the police. It all changes when an elite team is tasked with raiding the building in order to take down Tama once and for all.

OMG. Why did this movie not have a REAL theatrical release in the US. The IS the best action movie I've seen in decades! It cost $2.4 million to produce and is better than movies costing 100x that amount.

Wow. Color me impressed beyond words. If you haven't seen this already, get it from your local Redbox. You absolutely wont be sorry.

OMG.

Just saw it today too. Amazing amazing brutal fight choreography. Doesn't rely on CG/wires/improbably acrobatics to show its impact. Loved it.

Highly recommend the Blu-ray to all action fans. I will be rewatching it on a regular basis.

This is a short snippet of a fight scene (spoilers, obviously), but it sold me on getting the Blu-ray. What an amazing fight (and it doesn't end there)!

I did enjoy the raid though.

Ong Bak got real repetitive. It was cool enough, but did not live up to the hype in my eyes.

Just watched this last night from Redbox. Terrific movie, only really had two minor issues with it (starting with English dub instead of subs, and the grainy transfer in some spots, mostly right after the power went out)

Also, like that the movie was setup nicely for a sequel if they want to do that.

‘The Raid’: Trilogy Confirmed, U.S. Trilogy Quickly Follows

Quote:
The award winning Indonesian action film The Raid has been officially confirmed to be continued as a trilogy. Simultaniously, it is also confirmed that The Raid will be getting the ever so common U.S. trilogy remake treatment.

After being a huge hit at Sundance in January, it seems like Hollywood is eager to jump on this foreign hit, similar to the remake of Let the Right One In. Director Gareth Evans’ second film in the trilogy is currently going by the name Berandal (Indonesian for “Thug”). The first of the American trilogy will be titled The Raid: Redemption, and the sequel has already been given the title The Raid: Retaliation. A title for the third installment has not yet been named, believe it or not.
Quote:
“While I was developing ‘The Raid,’ I was looking at ways to kind of link those two scripts together because we had done all this choreography on that first film, we were like ready to go we just needed the finance to pull the trigger on it. Because I didn’t want to just abandon that project, I started to look at ways we could link the two together. So the one problem I had with that original script was that the lead role didn’t have an interesting enough backstory.”

“As I was thinking about it, I thought ‘Well if I make this a continuation of the story from ‘The Raid,’ it’ll work much better, and it’ll kind of add more ideas and add more different elements to it,’ so it’s actually gonna be the sequel to ‘The Raid.’ We’re in a position now where we can finance that movie, which is great [laughs]. So yeah, it’s a big relief now. For three years that’s been the itch I couldn’t scratch, so I’m kind of dying to kind of get stuck in and do that film next. That’ll be part two. Part three [will be] further down the line. A lot further down the line.”

Evans has stated that the sequels for The Raid will have more expansive action set-pieces, such as car chases with fights taking place in and out of moving vehicles. Given the intensity and amazing choreography of the original film, I believe that Evans can turn his trilogy into a lasting action classic. Lets just hope these remakes don’t snuff out the spark of the original films.

Great flick. On the wife's "you owe me this many chick-flicks because you made me see this," it came in at a record-tying three chick flicks.

Also, since I guess this is the best thread (was going to ask in wrestleGaf but didn't really want to go in there) to ask this question...

What is the wrestling move called that occurred in the hallway where he takes the guy's head and slams it into the door shards while going backwards. I know the move has a name but can't think of it right now :(

I watched this last night, it was pretty cool, but it's just action. Any thematic or story elements were hollow.

I just kept thinking about how to turn it into a badass video game. Like, make it open-world, with complete persistence, finite weaponry, and you're allowed total freedom in how to go from the bottom floor to the top.

I enjoyed the hour of it that I was awake for. Unfortunately, I feel like the action was just too fucking much and my brain just turned off after too much stimulation. Dont get me wrong, I loved what I saw, but it was just too damn much.

I felt it had some pretty cool moments but ultimately I was fairly underwhelmed by it in hindsight. The story was pointless so there was really nothing I could take away from it at all.

I do applaud it for it's non-stop action thought but there are better action films out there.

Me too, what others are better in terms of pure action? Seen Ong Bak and most martial arts movies where the choreography feels obvious and not as visceral as The Raid.

Its likely green-screen compositing, with some digital enhancements to make it look more natural.

Really enjoyed this movie. Definitely has the rubber banding of asian action films (dude gets his ass kicked but finds a last wind), but they really did a great job of bringing across maliciousness of Liquid Ocelot.

I like him more than Tony Jaa. He has more screen presence than Jaa ever did.

Very well shot action. But it got repeatitive fast especially towards the end.

As a movie it sucks. Just because it is an action movie doesnt excuse it for having an absolute turd of a story.

The idea of making it a trilogy sounds horrible. The talented action director should work on better original projects.

The actions are absolutely the best I've seen in a while. Lots of great choreograph fights and brutal deaths. Even though I'm Indonesian, I do not get what the story about. Surely all those guns that were fired would've alerted the neighbors nearby and rescue those cops, but nope.

How come? There was little to non story or character arcs so you just need to make two new movies with tons of action. I just hope director/writers don't start to think too big of themselves and start trying to fit in some elaborate plot into the next movie.
