Quote:
Writer/director Gareth Evans and Iko Uwais are hardly resting on their laurels after the global success of The Raid. In fact, they’re hard at work on the sequel. Finally, details about the follow-up are hitting the web.

The movie is being developed under the working title of Berandal. It’s likely based on a treatment the duo created back in 2010 that involved Iko Uwais trapped inside a violent prison and forced to fight his way out. Gareth Evans has stated there will be even more action in the sequel, with a total of eighteen action sequences planned. While it almost seems impossible for the team to top their efforts in The Raid, it’s clear they’re trying.

We also have the piece of artwork pictured here, which is a character design for a hammer-wielding femme fatale.

It’s currently unknown how she factors into the story, but somebody is probably gonna feel the brunt of that hammer.

Now that you guys have seen this, doesn't it just RUIN the new judge dredd?

Actually, this movie ruined all fighting scene movies for me(modern) they just aren't nearly as realistic and as amped as the raid was. Man, I haven't been on the edge of my seat in a theater in some time. Raid delivered a great 5 star hollywood action movie, for what.. 1 million dollar budget?

Haha, yea, that put me down somewhat. Although even though the villain was willing to fight fairly the good guys never agreed to that. They were just trying to survive.

Exactly my feelings. I was bored of it by the time the last fight came up.
Last fight went on way too long and by the time you got to this part, you realised all the fights were basically the same.

Mad Dog wasn't exactly fighting fair though. He didn't give them time to rest up or anything- just hit them when they were already at their weakest (a la Bane)

Ehhhhhh, not really. It was very light in that department, the action choreography was quite good but plot and character were quite thin with the possible exception of the corrupt cop, he was the only one who had much of a character or character development and even then his character played precisely into expectations.

After hearing nothing but hype about this film for months, I was sure there was no way it could possibly live up to my expectations. I was so wrong. For what it is, the Raid is almost perfect. Absolutely no time wasted on draggy bits, superfluous sidestories, or other contrivances. The fight scenes are a lot of fun and walk the delicate balances of being creative without being preposterous. My one complaint would be that some of the CGI squib effects look pretty bad. Beyond that it was probably the quickest 100 minutes I've spent with a film.

I'd prefer if they went like Takashi Miike's Dead or Alive films for the sequels and had the same cast but made the story it totally unrelated to previous film

They probably are gonna film a bunch a ideas they had for the first but didn't have the budget or ability to film for the sequel

Having seen the Raid and finally watched Dredd last Saturday, they are on different levels of awesome. Dredd definitely didn't feel ruined even though the premise is similar on an exterior level.

The sequel was actually a different film which was supposed to be made first, but the director couldn't raise the money that was needed. So he made The Raid instead because it was cheaper, and now he has the money to make his original film and also realised that it can be tweaked slightly and work as a sequel.

So really it makes sense form all angles. Creatively the film has been planned since long before The Raid even existed and has since only been tweaked slightly to fit better as a sequel. From a financial/marketing perspective it makes perfect sense to link it with The Raid, and would actually be silly not to.

It was awesome, but the final fight did drag a little bit where it felt a little formulaic - guy gets beat down recovers just in time to defend the other guy who just got beat down, and repeat. Other than that the action was awesome and I only remembered the line to the father right at the end which gave it a nice arc

Great movie. Action was superb. Reminds me of the new Judge Dredd. I know that this one was made earlier. Saw on wikipedia that the budget was 1.000.000 dollars. I don't see this movie made in hollywood for that budget.

Watched this last night on Netflix - just incredible! I'm not normally a fan of action movies at all but this one was just so well shot and visceral I was constantly on the edge of my seat.

And at times it was so, so tense.

Hoping to buy a copy for my dad/uncle's birthdays that are coming up, do both the Blu Ray and DVD versions have subs/dubs? Based on the comments in this thread the dubbed version is rather comical...

I was underwhelmed, action scenes were very good especially the hallway one. Other than that the movie was pretty bad. The ending were the main bad guy is not guarded by anyone and just let's himself get captured was laughable.

I agree. One of the most overrated movies lately IMHO.
Dredd was vastly superior to me.

Also, the amount of beating in the finale was ridiculous, especially compared to the rest of the movie when a guy would go down after a hit or two.
Everyone should've been dead after the first 20 seconds or less of that crazy bone and back breaking, yet somehow they always managed to get up like nothing had happened. Brush it off bro.

It REALLY killed it for me.

To each their own I guess : )

The Raid and Dredd are like the inverse of each other. The Raid starts really strong and runs out of steam towards the end, whereas Dredd starts weak and picks up towards the end.

I know its not the 70s/80s anymore but I kinda miss when martial arts movies were built around a characters fighting style (example being Jackie Chan incorporating his environment into the action). The Raid suffers a little from the 'keep hitting each other until the plot calls for a winner' syndrome.

Watching people run and shoot is almost always significantly less interesting than martial arts. I really like a good dance. American movie makers have never had the discipline to compete with Asia when it comes to fight scenes.

Merantau is a story with more meat to it, and has the same director, actor and Mad Dog combo if that's what you want. The funny thing is, the Raid is actually a prequel of sorts. The original film they wanted to make cost too much so they decided to make a much more small scale prequel, the end result being the Raid. I disagree that the story is turd, just cos it's simple doesn't mean it's shit. Dredd has a simple plot, doesn't mean the film is shit.
