Even in 2010 I was pitying the oblivious folks who still wouldn't upgrade their launch PS3's to slims (not even getting rid of the launch one, just having it on the side in turn for a new main slim), but in 2012? You're just asking for it.
Wait what? The locked saves are system locked? Doesn't that defeat most of the purpose of backing them up? I've backed up in the past to future-proof the data, not to depend on the same console forever.

I hear it's really challenging on the original models. But if I can't find Dragon's Dogma for $20 by the time the new model PS3 hits, I'll definitely be dissecting my George Foreman Grill. So close to a platinum, too... :(

Yes! Don't be stubborn. I was too and I had to fish out my MW2 disc out of the drive (by taking the drive completely apart). Don't trust that they will send the disc back with a refurb. |

Would probs be okayish if you had a cooling system =S. The problem of this generation's console is the use of non-leaded solder that makes the solder melt more easily... God I hope all new consoles have good cooling systems, hopefully the Wii U doesn't suffer the same problem.

Yes that's true, I still have a working Ps2 so I don't think about it.

One of the key things 360 had better hardware-wise was the ability to simply swap out your HDD and retain all data if the system died - with PS3, if the system dies, your HDD data is all lost too, since it makes you format when inserting into a different PS3. Skip the $150 fee and get a new slim like you should have a few years ago.

Mine did this awhile ago. When I powered it on, it'd beep 3 times and the light would turn yellow, and it wouldn't start. I press the power button again, and it turns on just fine.
It did that for like a month, and then it froze while I was playing Arkham City. So I did a hard reset, and since then it's been running just like normal again. No beeps, no yellow light. Somehow, Batman saved my PS3? |

I had saves up to 2007 and it was something like 35MB in all. Game saves only mind, anything else I can redownload anyway... At least I hope I can, if Sony put down the GTHD link I'm going to be very angry... |

Warning, it could take a very long time depending on the size of your HDD, and your dying PS3 may not hold out. I've used the feature twice, one of the times I was migrating around 300 GB of data and it literally took around 3-4 days to transfer. |

Another thing worth mentioning is that the OG PS3s are destined to fail due to the manufacturing flaw that leads to the YLOD. The Slim was the hardware solution to rectify that.
Paying $150 to get your Fatty replaced by Sony with another Fatty, just for PS2 backwards compatibility, is sacrificing the long-term for the short-term. Especially if the new model is going to be available for sub-$200! PS2 emulation on PC is getting better and better by the month as PC tech finally starts hitting the power vs. price sweet spot. I still have a hacked and HDD-installed PS2 for last-gen gaming. But once I build my new PC, I'll be switching it all over to emulation. |

Even if you do a system backup you can't restore it anyways.
The only way to backup that save is either by PS+ or by a system transfer with a new console. IMPORTANT: check around if it is still possible with system transfer, I wouldn't want that Sony took that feature away for whatever reason... |

Others will say since it is a launch unit, even if it isn't a sign of YLOD it's going to happen anyway so you might as well needlessly run out to the nearest store and waste money buying a new one. |

Unfortunately I didn't and once you start experiencing crashes and freezing it means that the circuitry is compromised, so dusting wouldn't help much... |

3 beep is 100% caused by the game. Hardware freeze can be a game issue too. Not to say the game is buggy, but an open world game is very difficult to iron out all crash issues. |

seeing as this thread is about HW problems I have recently been getting 1-2 second freezes in all my games on the 360. I did a google search for similar problems but i haven't seen anything resembling my problem.
anyone else have this happen with their xbox? EDIT: I did some more looking and it seems like it was my wireless mic that might be causing problems. I'm going to have to go and test this out because I was using it on friday. hopefully MS will fix this soon.

![]() It had a good run. Freezing and resetting are bad signs. This generation hasn't had the greatest track record for me. My launch 360 (bought it used) had to be refurbished once, my '09 PS3 is starting to give me trouble (didn't want to start up for a while yesterday), the DSL had a broken hinge and L button, my old 2005 PC blew a video card, my 2010 PC an SSD... I think the only piece of gaming hardware that actually worked from start to finish this generation has been the Wii. Telling GAF should always be the first instinct.

He said it froze and crashed while it was in the cabinet. Is this still happening once he moved it and let it sit for a bit? Just play the darn thing and see if you have any more issues. No reason to be paranoid at this point. |
