Freezing isn't usual but it's not unusual either. Depends on the game you're playing. If you're playing something like Skyrim or Fallout you can expect freezes regularly.

Resets are not a usual occurance at all. Depends on if it's random or only occurs when you try to exit a game. I remember Just Cause 2 and Darksiders sometimes would reset the console completely if I tried to exit the game to the XMB.

And it's been said before but please no closets or enclosed spaces. The sides and back of the PS3 need open space for a long and happy life.

I'm not sure I agree with this.

He said it froze and crashed while it was in the cabinet. Is this still happening once he moved it and let it sit for a bit?

Just play the darn thing and see if you have any more issues. No reason to be paranoid at this point.

Yeah I've moved it back and will play sleeping dogs again in a bit. If I see any freezing, I'll eject and get a new ps3.

The reset (more like a shutoff) was during a movie so I dunno :\

If you are worried about losing the disc play some other media and/or psn titles for a bit to test things.

Pretty much. You have maybe one more turn on when this happens and then it's gone. Let it fully cool down, boot it up tomorrow and back up all your shit and then have it die.

Hmm so that depends on the game... interesting.

I'll try the restore filesystem / rebuild database later, at least to see if it can make read speed normal again.

I actually didn't have any beeping issues. It would just freeze and restart during gameplay. It did this about 3 times within a day's span and then I got the YLOD error.

I babied mine. Absolutely made sure it was spotless. I even dusted and vacuumed around the area before I cleaned it. I never ran it for too long and I always turned it off when I was done. The solder is eventually going to fail and crack, it's just a matter of time and luck unless you can bring the heat down by about ~25 degrees during operation.

Ok I went back to play and it's been a few hours but suddenly I couldn't do anything in the game but move around. Now, this could be a game glitch but there was a yellow activity light flashing for the HD. Is that the YLOD?

I've restarted and taken the game out lol

edit: nm looked it up (YLOD). I think this was a game glitch cos I did a mission before I should have

See GAF, you made him so paranoid that any little glitch he encounters now is going to be attributed to a failing system/imminent YLOD.

Your PS3 is trying learn the language of binary load lifters, either that or Bocce. Time to repair the power couplings.

That is a known glitch with Sleeping Dogs, you can cancel it by boarding a vehicle I think...

The Yellow/Orange HDD icon is normal, the YLOD should appear on the slot of the one that's normally blue green.

I couldn't jack any vehicles so I just restarted. I did part 2 of a mission before pt1 and at the end it didn't give the "mission complete" thingy and the glitch happened

Sorry, but that's flat out idiotic.

Edit - Also, the yellow light of death hit a little later for me.
It started with hard resets, flashing red lights, and beeping, which eventually turned into hard resets, beeping, a quick yellow light flash, and then flashing red lights.
If you can actually manage to boot into XMB, I'd make sure that your trophies are synced, saves are backed up, and if the whims of the gaming gods allow it, a full backup-for-transfer of your HDD is completed. It's only a matter of time now.
My PS3 takes about 4 attempts at turning on before it stays turned on. Each time I turn it on, a few seconds later it will beep, quickly show a yellow light and then turn off. Usually on the 4th attempt will it stay turned on.

I take it this is a sign that the PS3 will die any day now? If so, I'll need to get on buying a new PS3 quickly...

So I downloaded the SD patch today and the system froze up during installation. And I've tried several times but it just won't install. I even deleted the game data and retried lol. Just to be clear, I CAN recover copyright-protected saves on a new ps3 if I use ps+ correct?

I'm just about ready to go buy the 360 version and be done with this crap. I hear it's better anyways. Only 9 hours of my life wasted :(

I'm still rocking a 60gb fat PS3 from launch too, OP. I too fear it might ascend to the heavens sometime soon, but it is still going strong nontheless.

It has deserved its peace though, that thing has made some crazy hours of usage. I wish there was some tracker inside the options menu that showed the total time the machine has been activated.

That's what happened to mine. It got worse and worse to the point I sometimes had to try 20 times before it stayed on. I'm guessing that as it warms up, it makes the loose solder joints on the graphics chip touch the motherboard again.
A friend of mine had the same issue and had the console reballed last December, it's still working OK now.
