I'm wanting to buy the original Chrono Trigger for a friend and I'm awfully confused #1

Price isn't much of a problem, however I just want to know I'm not being swindled.

So I've been prowling online and I've noticed that the SNES versions of Chrono Trigger are far more expensive than the Japanese Super Famicom versions. Is there any good reason for that? Was the SFC version some kind of reissue or something?

What would you guys say is a fair price for the original game? It doesn't matter if it's in Japanese or English, because my friend has already finished it, knows Japanese, and anyway, this is more of a sentimental gift than anything else.

Thanks.

There are more copies of the Super Famicom game available. The US version is more rare and also more valued. A game is only worth what people are willing to pay for it and the crazies here are willing to pay out the ass for the game.

If you want to go the cheapest route and your friend owns a Wii or DS, CT is available on either of those systems.

So out of the DS and PSN versions of the game, which is better?

DS version. The PSN version is the PS1 port and it was awful like most Square Snes to PS1 ports.

Looks like $50 is standard pricing for the cart on eBay.

I wouldn't sell mine for a measly $50. It's got ten times that in sentimental value.

You do not want the PSN version. Horrible load times.

Don't pay more than 40-50 for the cart.

Complete with the box will get tricky, as CIB copies go north of the $120 range consistently.

Personally, if you're buying it to play, I'd grab the SFC cart.

Looking at completed listings, it's closer to $75-$100.

You might get lucky and snatch one for $50 if someone puts it up at that price as a buy it now, but unlikely.

FWIW, you're better off getting the DS version anyway, unless you REALLY want the SNES version for some reason.

Boxed SFC version because your friend understands Japanese and because it is cheap on Ebay.

Chrono Trigger isn't really that rare it's just really in demand.

The DS version has a better translation/localization and bonus dungeons, as well as an extra ending. But I guess if you still want to get the SNES version as a sentimental gift, it makes more sense to get the Japanese version since it's cheaper.

For all of the "rare' expensive western games on ebay and the like, they never seem to be in short supply.

The Japanese DS version allows you to switch between Japanese and English on the fly. Great fun if your friend has not mastered Japanese.

I have the SNES and SFC versions, but the SFC version isn't nostalgic for me, as I didn't have it as a kid.

Important thing about the DS version is anything added to the game was complete crap. It's the best version because you can easily ignore what was added, and the original game is there in all its glory.

I haven't played the DS version in awhile, but isn't the music slightly worse than in the SNES version?

Mine have a fair bit of wear on them because I played the shit out of the games. Still have stuff like the spoilerriffic map for FFIII, too.

I have them all (the SoM poster was on my wall for a while as a teenager), but I bet when I'm in my 40's I would pay ridiculous money for them in mint condition.

Not that I'm aware of. I used to collect other things awhile ago (stamps, coins) and mint never meant sealed. Unless it's just a video game thing.

Toys do too, but it can go a step further in any collecting with the rise of grading.

But then, grading makes pricing ridiculous. Not a fan of it myself, since it defeats the purpose of actually playing the game.

I have a US copy, JP copy, DS copy, PS1 disk version and on PSN (Crap btw), all I need is a Wii so I can have it on the Wii :p. Anyways I'd say try to get a boxed JP ver. since it's a gift as a huge fan of CT that would be the best version to get as a gift.

It takes twice as long as the SNES version. It's fucking horrible.

Also, it takes like 10 seconds just to load the menu IIRC.
