I remember several years back they banned Japanese people from golf courses.

Whelp, those two countries are just never, ever going to get along.

Damnit...misspelled.

Probably doesn't have the same meaning as it does to "us" in the West. But it also goes to show that the whole world is whack.

Nah, it means the same thing.

There probably wasn't enough space on the sign/English mastery to spell out what they wanted to say.

The cynic in me wants to do the Nelson laugh because there are similar "no foreigner" signs in certain parts of Japan (granted I've never seen one with my own eyes), but at the same time, this is just affecting innocent people who have nothing to do with any of that.

I know next to nothing about Korea, so feel free to correct me, but are there REALLY a lot of Japanese tourists/travelers/etc. going there to even warrant this? Or is this the Korean equivalent of some backwater Texas bar going "NO DARKIES ALLOED" that no one with an IQ over 40 would go to?

I'm sure it has to do with the recent Takeshima stuff; Korea and Japan both claiming the same island(s) in the Sea of Japan. It's really a stupid politically motivated shitty move.

The signs and policy itself is extremist and has met with mixed reactions from the Korean online community...

...but the root sentiment: 1. That Dokdo belongs to Korea and 2. That Japan is utterly unresponsive to this claim (half are apathetic and the other half proudly considers it Japan)... that is basically a mainstream Korean view.

For what it's worth, my girl who is Japanese said "I don't care!. I'd declare Dokdo part of Korea. Just let me into the damn cafe.. I'm hungry" ;P

Hokkaido has more then few is full of these ;) At least near the big harbor towns/cities, I guess they don't like Russians. Same goes for Tokyo and other big cities that have those No Gaijin signs. Not that this justifies this bull shit.

There are a ton of Japanese tourists all over Asia. Contrary to popular belief, not all Japanese people hate Korea with a passion. Interest in Korean culture has reached a fever pitch in Asia. A lot of my Japanese friends were/are obsessed with anything Korean. Tourism has exploded recently in SK, especially because of Japanese tourists.

Also that's not Texas, you're thinking of Alabama.

Bad is bad, yes. But I think there is a certain degree less sadness to policies against "gaijin" than those who target specific ethnicities/cultures in particular.

It should all go away, of course, but for a monoculture to say "this place is for our family/culture/those who know our rules" is a degree less hurtful than singling out certain peoples.

I mean: Egyptians, Koreans and white Americans are all Gaijins. It's not oppressing minorities, it's oppressing majorities :P I don't excuse it... but I do think its just less hurtful, that's all. It's more about not being Japanese than being some singled-out "other".

Much prefer the way of Canada, America, etc, who, in theory, don't give a fuck about crap like that, though.

No its not. It is oppressing all minorities compared to oppressing 1 minority. (Egyptians+Koreans+White Americans are still minorities in Japan, not a majority)

That's true to big cities that are known for red light disticts but especially Hokkaido had many places with these signs. I asked about it in the late 90s when I was there and at least bath houses didn't want to deal with Russian sailors. Same thing was with Toyama Prefectures coastal towns that had ferry travellers from Vladivostok.

What's the fear here? The old-seeded racist fear that the foreigners will rape their women and take their jobs (It's amazing how universal this fear is)?

Not recent, been going on for many years. I have been working on and off Japan for nearly two decades and every now and then I have seen them. You will see them in many red light distircts, but at least in Hokkaido you saw them in many bath houses, and this actually goes for other cities too. Japanese people assume baka gajins don't know how to behave in public bath. I have seen couple of bars in Japan with those signs. Outside of realm of red light district these signs are rare but they are there.

Since the "Dokdo sign" incident last week I have heard 20-something Koreans and Japanese talk shit about the other country in private company (as a white guy confidant caught between these two worlds, I should probably write a book about the strange position this puts me in :P You have no idea).

But the character of this feels more like rivalry along the lines of sports competition, smartphone OS, console warz..... it's not so much "racism". Nationalism like crazy tho....

The first two things characterize most drunks... Japanese aren't exempt and the payment issue is an easy problem to fix if you charge up-front for drinks.

I just don't understand how the Japanese society still relies mostly on stereotypes to when dealing with foreigners in this day and age.

That's what happens everywhere that is very homogenous. They don't know any people of minority groups so they only have stereotypes to work with.

I don't know...I've been hearing some pretty racist things from Japanese friends and students over the past week. I know maybe most Japanese aren't racist against Koreans but there is a large portion that are. Ask a Korean living in Japan if it's just a rivalry.

They are not. Still there are plenty of places you can't go if you are forgeiner. Tokyo has some clubs and bars that won't let you in if you are not with Japanese group. These places are rare tho, I think Blacklace has more info about Bar/Club situation... Far as he is the guy who throws DJ gigs around Tokyo.
