This. Anyone that reads up on the history of the Sino-Japanese Wars and World Wars will be simply disgusted by the actions of the Japanese during that period.

Chi,

My mom's pastor just came back from Korea and was preaching about not buying Japanese stuff ... yet my uncle pretty much runs the Nissan dealer close by. I was kinda bemused by the situation.

Korean pastors are...Korean pastors. That's all I can say about them. They raise a reactionary suspicion in me.

Dude, why isn't your uncle selling Hyundais? Cheng-pi. Ha.

I really don't interact with them that much, I think I went last to a Korean church when I was six. My paternal grandmother was a hardcore Irish Catholic so I had to go Catholic preachings(CCD) on Monday, and to her Presbytarian preachings on Sunday(didn't help that I couldn't speak Korean). Man, now that I typed this up, I finally realize why I'm terrified of going to churches.

Well, not every single area but yeah...speaking as someone who spends a lot of time drinking in Shinjuku, it is definitely the least foreigner-friendly place. Especially if you try to drink in Kabukicho (which I do).

Sometimes I wish the world would be hit by some sort of great purge. It's the fucking 21st century. In the times of our grandparents it was the war against fascism, in our parent's time it was removal of segregation. What legacy will we leave for our future generations this time?

Generally I don't condone violence but I wish there was an international death squad that'd strike fear into racists, prejudiced and bigoted fucks.

Until Japan actually apologize for their atrocities and actually acknowledge they were monsters during that time. The East Asian countries will continue to hate they.

Most people don't know this but Japan's actions were no better than the Germans.

Imagine if the Germans as in the government itself and the majority of its people completely deny the holocaust happen and repeatedly lie in their history books.

Well that's basically Japan.

I only made it out to Shinjuku a couple times, but I still don't recall signs. Then again I wasn't really looking out for them and probably just ate at McDonalds while there since I was between jobs at the time.

The rest of the time I lived in Nagoya, still a big city, and definitely didn't see any there. Not doubting you of course, my mind is just blown. I kinda want to go back and keep an eye out for signs like that this time.

while there is a history of BIG hate between Korea and Japan, I can confirm that people are kind to foreigners in bigger cities in Korea. In the hotel I stayed for a week there, they even had japanese and chinese speaking workers to talk to tourists.

and If I were to guess, all those "Only Japanese" signs are more related to the owners only speaking japanese and not being able to give you proper service because of the language barrier.. anyone thinking of nationalism or racism is reading way too much into it.

Nah I can speak enough Japanese to get around and have been denied entry into some of these "Japanese Only" places. It's not widespread but it has happened and I have seen them enough for it to leave a negative impression.

Actually after death, one stops feeling everything. Thus, there are far worse things than death.

In the age of internet the social awareness has gone up but the level apathy of the people in spite of it remain broadly unchanged.

Seeing shit like this in the alleged civilized parts of the world makes my blood boil. And the worst part is, this message of hate, racism, prejudice and bigotry is passed down from parents to children.

These isolated incidents alone don't weigh heavily on my mind but the conflict on the whole really strains my ability to be levelheaded. I want nothing to do with this and I feel no antipathy whatsoever for the other "side" but I get inevitably entangled thanks solely to my name. What a terrible situation.

Korean people yell at you if you speak English on the subway, well, this is mostly true after a certain hour. And whenever I've seen Japanese tourists in Seoul, there is awlays someone who talks some shit to a companion. Hopefully it isn't a drunk older Korean man, because he's had enough booze to not give a fuck.

And yes, Korean establishments will kick you out for speaking Japanese.

Goes both ways, I was in Japan and I was wearing a ROK soccer jersey and I was refused service at a bar. So I just went back to my hotel and changed shirts, no biggie. But the dumbshit I was, i changed into a ROK army tshirt. So back one more time.

Part of it, I knew was coming, I have Korean themed tattoos, I just figured that wa sa double taboo.

I typically don't want to spend my time talking with assholes when I go out drinking and they know I can speak enough Japanese since I usually try to ask why i'm not allowed in in Japanese. The response is "Japanese Only'. This has happened when I'm with my girlfriend (who is full Japanese) and by myself. The shit happens.

Like I said earlier, it doesn't happen everywhere but , as someone who prefers dive bars to big meat fests, it has happened enough to where it has discouraged me from going to smaller bars that I don't know. My neighborhood has two places with these signs. It really doesn't matter if the owner doesn't know English either since ordering beer is probably one of the easiest things to do in Japan.

I don't remember seeing too many Japanese stars being as huge in Korea, especially after the 1998 ban on Japanese good, cultural and otherwise being lifted.

Yeah, it's pretty much one way. Although some Korean actors are becoming popular with older generation Japanese as well. Also I would say that it is largely the female Japanese population enamored with Korean male celebs (manlier image, perhaps?), and not so much Japanese men into Korean female celebs.
