Virtual peeping tom exposed in Star Trek game
#1
Too bad the following didn't happen on GAF, it would've been stuff of legends.
So, in STO or Star Trek Online someone posts a thread to some screenshots about 'exciting unknown ships' which turn out not to be unknown at all. But then someone else notices that the poster has also a secret image folder full of virtual voyeurism. The link is in the thread but I guess GAF TOS wouldn't want me linking it here with all those flashing virtual pubes. I think quote from the guy who noticed it says it all:
Quote:
I don't know whether to facepalm or to rewatch that Extras scene where Patrick Stewart 'has seen everything'. Now I also can't ever relog to STO without imagining people standing near trying to look through my armor. EDIT: Original thread seems to be deleted on the game forums.

It'll probably make the game better, so this should be a win win for everyone.

That's very..... odd. But no one else is seeing them in game, just him and his right hand?

Well, as none of the avatars involved got pregnant I think it's a pretty safe assumption that they did secretly like it.

When I read the thread title I thought he was hacking into people's webcams through STO. But this, who gives a shit really. He's perving on toons. If he wants to, let him. The worse thing he did was get caught but everyone has weird kinks they'd rather others don't know about.

The addon itself is harmless, it allows for roleplayers to add some info about their character like full name, age, and simple stuff like a biography. There are actually some good roleplayers on WoW (I played on a RP server for about a year), but there's also a lot of folks who use them for erotic roleplay advertisements. Some of that stuff gets weird.

Oh, that stuff. I don't think there's anything especially wrong about that either. If 2 consensual adults want to bone in Stormwind, more power to them! I'm sure people have legitimate consensual cybering in STO too. I just think this voyeur case is creepy because the guy clearly 'hunted' victims who didn't know they were participating in in someone's fap collection. It's like getting caught in upskirt photos, and it goes even creepier when you think that the players in question could be really young.

Well, not quite but there's same elements. Your virtual representation in the game world is used for sexual gratification by someone you didn't know about. Of course it could be said that it's like fapping to a work email you wrote but consider this: in MMO games people put a lot of effort to their characters, dozens, hundreds, even thousands of hours. That creates a sort of emotional attachment to the character and the game, and knowing someone stripped your virtual pants off and 'boned' your character is a bit skeezy.
Also, this guy got caught trying to sell an unauthorized pornographic modification to game files. It's a bit academic what it compares to, Skybuck Flying is going to space pilot graveyard. |
