12 minutes Castlevania: Mirror of Fate (3DS) gameplay video

Looks pretty bad. Typical Euro-style action beat-em-up where enemies take like 1000 hits, the attacks seem like they have no impact, and it just seems.... boring all round. The team making this keeps saying they're inspired by Castlevania 3... but I'm really not seeing it at all. Looks more like a side scrolling God of War. I had one on my phone years ago, and it was a lot like this! :( |

I think it looks good but the music implementation sounds just as horrible as it was in LOS. The score itself was phenomenal but it just seems to play whenever, wherever, and it sounds like a lot of the music is going to be rehashed from the first game which is a major negative to me. It worked for the large 3D landscapes but this is a different game that needs different music.

Well, it kinda looks like Castlevania on a superficial level, but...
Why does it use the heavily segmented flow like Tomb Raider/Prince of Persia/ICO/Soul Reaver/GoW? Platforming and combat are very strictly separated, and the platforming involves following blinking lights to get to a goal (switch?), while the combat is in the enemy-room style where everything is a damage-sponge and you rely on 'deep combat' (multiple button inputs and finishers) to clear everything out. Like, why does a skeleton or a bat take 9+ hits? Why is the combat padded so much? Why is the game using design limitations imposed by PS1/PS2-era hardware? |

Ugh, the combat looks so horrible. Why can't they take cues from the old games on the actual gameplay?
Please, Mercury Steam devs: Give us the option to adjust enemy and player health and damage output. |

Clearly, I haven't heard one original piece of music. I'm sure it's there and maybe this is temp stuff, but it's slightly annoying at this stage. |

I thought that first big enemy looked fun to fight and the areas overall looked nice too with a lot of depth which in 2D games would be done with parallax scrolling but here is fully modeled despite the 3DS being relatively weak. There are some glimpses of how different acquired skills and items could be used to open up new areas since there was some platforming and stuff shown too. I wouldn't judge how long it takes to kill enemies by random videos like this either, for example the dude didn't use his magic or sub weapon or whatever that gauge under the health indicates at all at first. Whether it's a good game or not remains to be seen but I wouldn't say it screams shit at all right now. Maybe it's not what old school Castlevania fans want but neither was LoS (edit: or SoTN as someone mentioned!) and that one, while flawed, seems to have its fans too now. QTEs are stupid though.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like the combat from LOS (3D) translates well to a 2D game. They should've tried to make it closer to the other 2D games. |

I believe the theme used in the E3 trailer was new, but the theme actually has similar parts to pieces of the song used for Lords of Shadow 2's E3 trailer..

I'm having a bit of trouble being offended, since "old school castlevania" has been rebooted before. Metroidvania games are not much like level based Castlevania, either in progression, OR combat.
This looks pretty good to me so far. In fact, if the framerate ends up solid in the final build, it looks great. |

Yeah I just mean all the music in the gameplay footage thus far has been remixed LOS1 tunes which is very off-putting to me. I'm not getting New Super Mario Bros. 2 because I refuse to listen to the same fucking WAHH WAHH crap yet again so I really hope that we're just hearing temp tracks-- I doubt it though.

Yeah, like the enemies, the (non-snowy) castle, the character models... Heck, just about everything from this 3DS game is probably taken from the PS360 game.

Someday they'll undertand what made the classics great and reboot it again. That's my hope at least.

I just wish there weren't quite so many nods to God of War.
The struggling to open a chest that looks very similar, the slight pauses when connecting a hit with an enemy, tons of grunting, climbing on top of that large enemy, it would be preferable if all that was omitted. I guess it's OK for someone who has no experience with God of War, but if I were to play this I would constantly be thinking of the similarities. |

Visually, its kind of hard to tell because...
A. It is camera footage B. The idiot playing still has the 3D turned on. Gameplay looks ehhh. I will probably rent it for the story since I like LoS so much and am super excited for the sequel. |

Still looks pretty good to me. I get the sense that the enemies wouldn't have taken as long to kill if it were being played by someone more familiar with the combat system.
That said, I have enough lingering uncertainty about this one that I'll wait for reviews before buying.

The framerate is, as always, horrible. And it looks like you're hitting air. Dull.
Yes, it's an incredibly widespread problem that they simply refused to fix, lots of people complaining about it. Not even the XL fixes the marks left by the slidepad.. No
