Developers you automatically purchase from?
#1
Dear GAF,
I'm curious which developers you automatically purchase games from, if any. In other words, you purchase their games regardless of what others say, regardless of whether it's your favorite genre or theme. Maybe you don't even read previews or follow the development. Kind of like a blank check of trust. For me:
Used to be, but no longer:
I searched, but didn't find any recent threads on this topic. Please lock if I missed it. EDIT: I just want to clarify something that seems to have misled several individuals. I don't purchase these developers' games because I want to feel cool for having bought a Naughty Dog game. Personally, I like to be surprised by games as much as possible. In my experience, the less I know about a game going in, the more enjoyable my experience (all else constant). But I can't afford every single game, especially new. Having to choose between learning about a game and ruining some of the surprises is a trade-off for me. I don't mean just story spoilers, but even gameplay, moves, classes, etc. Also, I realize I'm human and make errors in judgement. For example, I look at Brutal Legend and think it won't be that fun for me. But if I give it a shot, it could be my personal GotY. It's hard to say for sure without playing it. But again, I have limited resources. So, sometimes I use the developer's past to inform me about what to try, even if it's against my initial impressions. Some developers have left such a large impression on me that I would follow them blindly, even against my better judgement. Because they've proven me wrong in the past. E.g. a doll house simulator might not sound that fun ex ante, until one sits and plays the Sims. Obviously if Wil Wright put out a game that was 12 hours of sitting behind a bus, I'd really regret it, and I'd probably never buy his games again. But he's only attained auto-buy status because I trust he would not put me through such an experience. I can't speak for the others in this thread, but hopefully this clarifies my position a bit. Nobody.
Everyone can make bad games. |

I think for me, Nintendo is the only developer that I will immediately purchase a game from.
Oh and now Naughty Dog! But, no matter how good the dev is, there is the possibility that they will produce a bomb, so I generally wait to read the reviews before I purchase anything. |

Pretty much. Although even them, I backed out of buying CS:GO. CS is the one series of theirs I have trouble getting into (probably has something to do with my unrelenting hatred for snipers).
EDIT: Okay, if The Witcher is the quality we can expect from all their titles, CD Projekt RED is a good choice. |

I don't think anyone qualifies at this moment.
Which is kinda sad. Hopefully I can think of one when I devote a bit of time to it. |

Fair enough. I guess sometimes I like an experience that was not expected ahead of time. And with the proliferation of previews, reviews, screenshots, and word of mouth, I find it difficult to do that without an occasional blind purchase.
Oh, I kind of forgot Valve, but they'd be up there with me too after the Portal series.

Nobody. There are games that I automatically consider purchasing simply because of the developer. Whenever I see that Atlus logo on a game, it piques my interest almost immediately. If it's made by Grasshopper, I will almost instinctively buy it. Have yet to buy Shadows of the Damned or Lollipop Chainsaw, though. Trying not to break the bank.

While it's not true in principle, at least for me (if they make something that I'm not interested in, i'm not going to buy), it's always been true in practice so far.
I bought every Valve game to this point, and I must say that one thing that makes very easy to throw money at them is: with Valve you always know that what you are buying isn't just what they are offering at day one, but it will probably going to include any genre of extra content and long term support for that product over the years. Oh, and even if they are just at their second game, I'm already starting to feel the same way about CD Projekt RED. |

Nobody gets a free pass.
Read reviews, play demos before purchasing a game on a case by case basis. That's if I'm still interested. No developer loyalty. Anyone can make a bad game or one in a genre you're not interested in.
