Kanye only has 6 albums, counting WTT. What else are you including in there? Albums he helped produce like the Blueprint?

This list is heavily biased anyway since the only stuff listed right away was Pitchfork's editors favorites. I had to manually put in half my albums.

I'm sure most people didn't bother with that.

I know. Music is the only thing that seems to get that way though. Why is that? It doesn't seems to happen near as much with movies. Or at least not that I've seen. So many post in here disregard the list because their favorite band isn't on it. It happens with damn near every music list. Words like "hipster" just get thrown around to describe why someone likes or doesn't like something. Its awful. Which sucks because I like to talk about music.

No you're right. I accidentally put down the number that comes up in search which includes his name in three other places.

No, in this case the list accurately reflects the term to a large degree. Knowledge of rap and hip hop too.

Kanye has had nice things to say about Radiohead in the past, so that might give him some cred with P4K readers. I don't hate this list but I've just never been able to get into NMH, Animal Collective or Wilco. I'm not saying they're bad or anything but their appeal just eludes me. Different strokes.

Honestly, having Madvillainy in top 10 would have been more hipster than having MBDTF.

MBDTF is just flat out pleb, and riding the curtails of hype.

This is so amusingly biased towards the Pitchfork demographics, then again that's exactly what you'd expect. I keep on forgetting that this list only covers the last 15 years also, so I'm like "WHERE'S PARKLIFE" then I realise it came out 18 years ago.

edit: I've never even heard of Sufjan Stevens before

I was more trying to mock the faux outrage that some people seem to be expressing about an omission, I tried to make that clear with my 'Musical tastes don't match' thing, but eh.

I've listened to quite a bit of the list and I can say that the top 10 is pretty lackluster since it includes two too many Radiohead CDs.

NMH is my favorite band, and I love Wilco, but I don't understand the love for Radiohead.

Different strokes indeed.

I was talking about music discussion in general. Though I do think it is extremely imprudent to label a lot of these albums mere "hipster" music. There is a lot of great music on that list that shouldn't be demeaned by what its fan base is. Like I said earlier, P4K isn't really a hip-hop heavy site, so no more hip-hop than Kanye shouldn't really surprise anyone.

People forget about the inherent bias laden with this list. Pitchfork exclusively listed their BNM choices over that span of time. To enter non-BNM album choices would require conscious thought over expedience. If I made the list, I probably would have forgotten a slew of albums that Pitchfork neglected to rate highly and would have had little motivation to add them in manually.

Obviously the list is terrible for the most part, but much of that is a direct consequence of the structure and layout of the voting process.

It's part of the 'Hipster' stereotype though isn't it? If you ask a self-professed group of 'hipsters' to rate Hip-Hop albums from the last 15 years they'll undoubtedly up Kanye at the top. Regardless of the actual quality of the music, some of it is very much associated with the stereotype.

This is definitely a big part of it, and something I noticed when I was voting as well.

The social aspect made it so that you could see your friends' lists and add those albums to your list. When you have 100s (if not thousands) of albums to sift through from the last decade and a half most people are probably going to take the path of least resistance and go with whatever someone else's list reminded them of. So the power of suggestion, from either Pitchfork or other voters, had a big influence on this list. Oh well, it probably would have been mostly Radiohead and Arcade Fire anyhow.
