Do you pick up spiders? #1

Might as well say it: yes, I'm watching Friends, dammit! It's on Nick @ Nite. In the episode, Ross wanted Rachel to overcome her fear of swings and that put her on the spot. So she in turn wanted Ross to get over his fear of spiders. So she picked one up and told Ross to hold it while she got on the swing.

Now as a kid, I was a total bug/small animal nerd, picking up every butterfly, snake, caterpillar, etc. that I could get my hands on. I collected spiders, but I NEVER touched them with my bare hands. They bite! Or was I just being irrational?

EDIT: With your hands?

I recently went to my friends house to check out his wii. I was generally impressed. It was larger than I expected though.

When I was 10 years old, I watched my (female) cousins, also 10, torture a black widow spider by trapping it in a bottle of bleach and shaking it up.

Spiders have a behavior fairly consistent with sociopaths like Ted Bundy.

this applies to cockroaches as well. though i hardly find spiders big enough that when i crush them they leave behind a mess big enough that would warrant a napkin cleanup.

Hell fucking no!

Even once they're dead I still only handle them with a paper towel. Somehow, I'm afraid they're just faking it and they'll spring back to life, crawl up my arm, and into my ear.

Sure. They are not any different than other bugs. Most are harmless and can't do any damage to you. Not sure if I would pick up something like a Brazilian bird-eating spider with my bare hands though.

The worst insect handling mistake I ever made was picking up a water boatman (awater bug which as two paddle legs to propel itself across the water surface). I was 14 or so and didn't know at the time that they bite hard. Felt like I was stung by a wasp. I'd rather be covered in spiders than hold another one of those.

Your fear isn't unfounded. I crushed a spider with my shoe a few weeks back, and I hit it hard. It was stuck on the bottom of the shoe, and I was looking at it as I was preparing to wipe it off with a piece of paper towel. I thought to myself that it didn't look very smooshed, considering how hard I hit it. At that moment, it lurched off the shoe to the floor, and attempted an escape. So I hit it again... and again, and again. I wasn't making the same mistake twice with that little bastard.

Still, he was a worthy and cunning adversary.

Your ideas are intriguing to me, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

For all but the most ornery of spiders (and other creepy-crawlies), I will use my hands to safely cradle the cute little bugger and release it outside.

I'm not going to cast stones here because who amongst us is without sin. Not you LiK. Not you Mimic. Not even you Log4Girlz (and that ain't saying much). I won't judge you for the blood on your hands, in your napkin, on your shoes... on your floor. No, I won't judge you but let me ask you this: When does the killing stop? When the spider speaks, when the spiders stand tall and proclaim their freedom? When we are the spiders take up arms and both sides, be it human or spider, have lost so many lives that we finally grow sick of death and murder? Do we seriously wish for a small life, a mother carrying her children and every one of those ill-fated children to wail in the eerily-unfamiliar tone of blood-drenched souls who are having their life cut so short in a cold, unaware manner? Is this or legacy as we stand at the apex of the evolutionary pyramid? Can we not allow our souls to be filled with compassion for the lives which grow amongst us with the same nurturing benevolence which has led us in to our adulthood? Can we not help? Is our will to live in the service of others be it man or beast such a strange concept? Can we not accept life as ours as our own? Must we kill bits of our self without understanding who they are? We love life and we will to live so why; why can't we will and realize the need for others to live as we do?

Can we no longer love?

I get it if you feel your life is threatened but we humans are more capable than that. People kill tiny life because they feel it's unpleasant or simply unwanted. It wouldn't beyond our capability to find alternatives to death but to choose not to in the name of convenience is cruel and unjust.

Let's be honest with ourselves here MIMIC... what's the real joke here? What's the comedy?

comedy: A dramatic work that is light and often humorous or satirical in tone and that usually contains a happy resolution of the thematic conflict.

A man being entrapped by the law which was made to protect you isn’t funny. It's sick. It's a sick thing for our government to do. Allow your citizens the decency to remain human AMERICA!

Sorry. I didn’t mean for your thread to become about this. It seems to follow me around now. I assure you I’m “normal” so let’s get back to the topic at hand.
