Dude, some of the Iron Chefs, like Kenichi and Sakai must be pretty old now. I'm guessing they need to get new chefs.

Also, save for the William Shatner Iron Chef, the Food Network one is actually a decent show. Alton Brown is a very competent commentator and the chefs they bring in a really great.

Iron Chef rights are still owned for NA distribution by Scripps Network. So Food/Cooking/Fine Living Channels.

Kaga is not coming back, you must know this. Sakai and Chen will also be MIA. Don't expect Morimoto either.

A few Cameo's to hand over possibly, but nothing more...it will be terrible.

I think the problem with the US show at this point is they just have too many Iron Chefs, so you never see any of them enough. And they are going to be running Next Iron Chef again in a few months so there is going to be another one. They should dump Garces and Forgione. Just focus on Symon, Morimoto, and Flay (I have no real opinion on Zakarian at this point).

As long as they keep close to the original format and not the incredibly scripted US version they'll be fine. No one expects the older chefs to be up for doing this much anymore.

Also, you don't have the same sort of focus as the Japanese Iron Chef did, such as master of a particular type of cuisine. They sort of did at first, with Flay, Batali and Morimoto. But it expanded.

There's no spontaneity on the US version. They treat it like a standardized cooking competition instead of a larger scaled version of Chopped.

MICHIBA is the god of chefs. Morimoto, while above other men, is just a disciple of Michiba. Broth of vigor, fools!

There was no spontaneity in the Japanese version to. The original way the show was run where both contestants are told ahead of time that the secret ingredient maybe one of 3 -5 different ingredients. This was usually a week or even a month ahead of time.

Both chefs have a set dollar amount of how much in extra ingredients they can purchase on top of what is in the regular pantry.

The only thing real is the cooking time.

I beleive judging takes around 2 hours or so,

And the reveal of the secret ingredient is usually pre-taped.

Bring back Kaga.

If you can't bring back Kaga, (I seem to recall reading that he had cancer, though I may be mistaken,) don't pull some BS like the US show tried about his nephew or whatever. Just hire a different actor, and get as close as possible.

But they had to do it all themselves. The US version has them running practices and drills for weeks beforehand because they have access to their staff. They're in their comfort zone.

Awesome. Was my favorite show for a long time until FN chose the remake (and their thousand "spinoffs") to rerun to death instead of this classic.

I remember on the New York battle they took Morimoto and Michiba to some house in the suburbs and had them cook leftovers. The woman whose house they were at had no idea two of the best chefs in the world were in her house.

Iron Chef Japan had staff too. All those dudes from the culinary school. Same as US, 2 assistants per chef.

I always thought Kobe was the most feared Iron Chef. The only time people would face him is when they wanted to know what a humiliating loss felt like. Kobe's the GOAT.

I love this show! My Dad and I always got a kick out of watching it, some much crazy stuff going on in those kitchens. Really fun to watch.

There's some guy on the show everyone keeps calling "Squee-san" or something. I know that's not the right spelling but that's what it sounds like. Shit is hilarious.

Fukui-san!

Yes?

I've been told that it sounds more like 'Fukui-san' than 'squee-san.'

there was at least one episode where the challenger went solo, and then the iron chef did as well. Probably pre agreed upon, but still awesome. I liked the old iron chef japanese who would write out his menu before beginning.

Agreed. Food Network seems to not understand that the melodramatic introductions to the theme ingredient and the challenger was one of the reasons why the original was so gnarly. In its defense, the original was a portal to Japanese culture (something a lot of us enjoy), so the American version was sort of crippled from the start. It does a good job, though.

I cannot wait for this new version. When does it start airing? And I wonder if Seiji Yamamoto will be a candidate for Iron Chef Japanese.

Does Iron Chef America still have a single commentator, or have they gone to the play-by-play + color duo that was used in the original Iron Chef? That seemed like the most obvious problem with ICA when it launched.
