So I regularly get contacted through PM's or specific threads about how to get the Silent Hill 2, 3, and 4 running on a PC with widescreen and a less amount bugs. Thus, I figured I might as well make a thread as a guide to it, especially when one considers the fact that Konami has completely mishandled the console HD collection with the inexcusable bugs and abhorrent changes to the original material. As such, this is also an attempt at preserving some of the best games of the medium's history. Special thanks go out to all the excellent people who did the various Widescreen hacks, FOV values, and so on (Squizzy, Rope, whoever made the SH3 FOV tool, etc.)

Where to get these excellent Team Silent games on PC?
Unfortunately Konami lack many standard brain functions and haven't released the PC versions of the games through digital distribution (I could imagine Konami don't want the potential licensing and royalty issues of the voice actors once again by re-releasing the PC versions). This is a shame, as the used copies goes around anything between $20 to $120 on Ebay or Amazon, depending on the quality. However, you might get lucky and get a copy of either game for a lower price.

Guide to the PC versions:
The games are handled differently in how to get a proper non-4:3 aspect with whatever resolution you want. I will go through each game in 3 posts below the OP, in order to make the instructions more readable. If you have any corrections or suggestions, I'll add them whenever I have the time to do so.

Emulating the PS2 versions through PCSX2
Alternatively, if one is completely deterred by the complexities below and lack of port quality from PS2 to PC, then it is also possible to emulate the PS2 versions through PCSX2 and use the FOV hacks, depending on your region. The hacks have to be placed in the cheats folder and you have to remember to Enable Cheats in PCSX2 in order for the FOV hack to work. So far I've only seen FOV hacks for SH2 and SH3 for PAL and NTSC versions, while the Japanese version have FOV hacks for all three PS2 games. However, be aware that emulating them through hardware emulation (i.e. higher resolution than 480p) will cause several glitches, such as missing shadows, unplayable FMVs, and other bugs. Refer to this post for examples.

Custom Steam Icons for use at your leisure
I have also made some Custom steam icons for those who want shortcuts into their Steam library. These are in the game-specific post.

Silent Hill 2:

Easy mode through Angular Graphics' fix:

I call it "Modern Compatibility Fix"

Instructions
Install the game.
Run my patch.
Select if you'd like to play with AA.
Select your desired resolution.
Play.

What it does
- Copies the fixed exe over the original
- Runs the resolution patcher
- Applies an affinity (& 640x480 mode) fix, this can be uninstalled from "Program and Features" ("Add/Remove Programs" in XP) later, it's called "Silent Hill 2 Processor Affinity Fix", for example after you uninstall the game you may want to uninstall this too.
- Auto sets the game to 640x480 (which is actually the resolution you have selected eg 1920x1080) and graphics settings turned to the maximum (minus the noise filter)
- Applies my AA fix in case you want to play with AA. If you don't plan to, no reason to enable it, as the hack causes a few glitches (still 90% of the game looks fine, and really.. AA is a must with this game..)

Notes
- Dunno if it works for everyone, eg if one has UAC enabled (I don't). Hopefully people will test it and report back.
- On my setup sometimes sh2pc.exe hangs at startup (I just have to ctrl+alt+del open the task manager and kill sh2pc.exe and then I can launch it again hoping it works this time). The reason I'm writing this is that if the game crashes it will launch with the graphics settings turned down. So you might want to raise them again (edit: alternatively you can make settings.ini read only) as my patch cannot fix this crashing issue.

Manual mode:
  1. Install Silent Hill 2 and (optional) patch it with the soundfix (this might be superfluous, as the fixed .exe below may overwrite the changes. I personally still do it just to be sure).
  2. Download Squizzy's Respatcher and use the included fixed .exe of sh2pc.exe included in the archive (unfortunately the patcher does not work with the original .exe)
  3. Run the patcher and select the desired resolution (Keep in mind: If SH2's original resolution is not set to 640x480 as it normally is, the Respatcher won't change anything).
  4. Download this fix by angular graphics and drop it into your Silent Hill 2 folder (this will enable your Nvidia/AMD override of AA without interrupting lens flare and filters)
  5. Now you can either go with either of these two options to make sure that the audio doesn't skip or that the game doesn't crash:
  6. Option A: Use this compiled exe to start Silent Hill 2 (put it into your SH2 folder). Skip Option B.
  7. Option B:Run Silent Hill 2 and Alt+tab and go into Windows' Task Manager (ctrl+shift+esc). Under 'Processes' right-click sh2pc.exe and set the amount of CPU cores to only 1 core. Otherwise you will get sound and stability issues.
  8. And make sure to have Triple Buffering set to OFF. Otherwise you will get weird lines in the geometry of the game
  9. Return to Silent Hill 2 and select New Game
  10. ????
  11. Profit

Results (no noise filter):

Silent Hill 3:
  1. Install the game
  2. Edit disp.ini in the savedata folder to your desired resolution. Example:

    Code:

    "size=1920x1080"
  3. Download this FOV tool and put it in your SH3 folder.
  4. Start the tool
  5. Input the correct FOV values. I personally use these for my 16:9 settings, but they might be too "thin" for some people

    Code:

    Width FOV=0,90
    Height FOV=1,2
  6. Start the game.
  7. Press * on your numpad when you are in the game and the FOV will be corrected according to your FOV values
  8. If your values aren't correct, you should probably mess around with it by comparing it to regular 4:3 screens like this The trick is to make the game not appear stretched or cropped.

Silent Hill 4:
Silent Hill 4 has just recently been able to increase its FOV in order to accommodate higher resolutions. Be aware that the horrible 15 FPS bugs and object blur remain and the noise effect is broken - I'd advise emulating the PS2 version with a widescreen hack instead. Here's the guide for the PC version:
  1. Install Silent Hill 4
  2. Use the fixed .exe to make widescreen possible
  3. Download, Install and Run Art Money
  4. Run Silent Hill 4
  5. Alt+Tab to desktop and in the Art Money process list find "Silent Hill 4: The Room".
  6. Load this table into Art Money.
  7. Art Money's memory addresses should now be filtered and you will see the specified Width, Height, and FOV values
  8. For resolution, change the width and height to whatever resolution you like. The easiest way is to select multiple Width addresses / Height addresses.
  9. FOV values: For 16:9 displays, I use Rope's:

    Code:

    0.75 HFOV
    0.58 VFOV
  10. Remember to freeze the new FOV values, as they will be reset once you travel between levels.
  11. Once you're done editing the values, Alt+tab back into the game and the resolution and FOV should be fixed.

Differences between the original PS2 versions and the ported PC versions:
The Silent Hill PC ports are not incredibly stellar and 4 is probably the worst of them. So this list is only a work-in-progress, as the differences I can remember off the top of my head are thus far:

Silent Hill 2:
Soft shadows
The volumetric fog in the PC version is more simple and less fluid than the PS2 version. Example:

PC fog

PS2 fog (through PCSX2, no FOV hack)

Silent Hill 3:
PC version allows for 4096x4096 internally rendered textures, but I imagine it is only a select few, as many of the textures still are identical to the PS2 version.
Depth of Field effect remains at the original PS2 resolution, thus creating a jaggy DoF effect in the PC version.
Otherwise it's probably the best port.

Silent Hill 4:
Cutscenes run @ 15 frames per second. So far I haven't encountered a solution to this problem.
Post-processing filters, such as the noise-efect or the crackled hair on the camera when encountering a ghost, is missing from the PC version.
Object-blur is bugged and thus creates a hazy look to cutscenes

Good guide. Should mention that for SH2, you need to set the resolution in the in-game options to 640x480 for the respatch to work.

I thought the same thing, until the 15FPS cutscenes made the replay unbearable. Unfortunately I can't play my PS2 copy in widescreen yet, due to lack of a FOV hack.

Ive played the first game and ive always heard the second and third are masterpieces but have been holding off, seems like with your guide the PC ports are no longer so bad.

With that said, my biggest gripe is gamepad support since games like these are so cinematic.

So I wrapped up a couple of the games I had been working on and set up SH2 again for a replay because of this thread. I really dig my 360 pad setup in Xpadder for the game. I basically just delete all the joystick entries in the game, screenshot the keyboard bindings and then use that screenshot as reference for setting up a profile that I think will work well/is similar to the console bindings. It's a damn shame we will never get "HD" re-releases with this kind of image quality:

You're too kind, randomwab. Thanks for making my day even better :)

Remember when playing SH4 that the cutscenes are in 15FPS, the post-processing filter seems to be missing, and the blur in cutscenes is bugged. The PCSX2 version seems to be fine, but (so far) cannot be run in 16:9.

Like I mentioned, I wasn't saying that the source textures themselves were 4096x4096, but that they were able to be rendered internally in that particular resolution. I apologize if that wasn't clear.

Yes.

The only issue I'm having is that I cannot set AA because it disables advanced filters and lens flare. Tried the workaround and didn't work for me.

Anyways, I also tried the enb mod and I like it. The color saturation was too much for me so instead of 1.5 I changed it to 0.5. Blacks are darker now instead of grey. Looks nice.
