Yeah, I think it is a good compromise. Not everyone wants to buy their phones at Notre Dame.

Putting up a sign welcoming Samsung back to Windows Phone? It's only hostile if you want to make it up to be, hardly calling out anyone.

I'd say that the .8" sensor is far more important than the sampling algorithm. Mirrorless cameras using 1" sensors have equal to or higher IQ without any oversampling. I'd have no problem if they kept the sensor size the same but only included 12 milion pixels.

Very true. Smartphone Beta test, however....

I see Sprint and Verizon in the OP... is there any hope for T-Mobile getting a high-end Nokia?

Is the Nokia line confirmed for Sprint? I get unlimited data with Sprint and I've come to appreciate it.

I think the high-end WP8 is reserved for AT&T, but i could be wrong.

I think the correct way to word your statement would be "I'd take a 5mp camera if it meant the lower bill-of-materials costs could allow for a front camera with better quality than the shitty sensors that get tossed in the front of most phones" ;)

And again, there's plenty of videos on youtube in 1080p recorded by the pureview 808 showing the prowess of the sensor+the mics nokia used. I just hope that they haven't compromised the quality too much if the 21MP sensor is the real deal. I'd link some but I can't vouch for the quality of anything from my phone.
Fair enough. I'm by no means an expert as you can tell.

I just want this thing to "have it all". I'll be buying outright, but I'd still like to have it for st least 2 years.

But that I meant Nokia WP going to carriers besides AT&T and T-Mobile.

Right now, I think that Tmobile is rumored to get the Arrow, which looks like the middle option. I'm not positive if they'll actually do this. So much wasted oppurtunity not debuting your flagship on all four.

this man understands. it's all about sensor size. hopefully, this new 21mp sensor is just as large as the 42mp.

I think they are implying that the next Nokia will be more copy-worthy then the point release Apple has cooked up for us this year.

But again, they never outright stated anything. It's a friendly jab from a flailing company.

Don't think we'll be getting Pureview this year, which is pretty much the only thing that would get me excited for the new Lumia. Having said that Windows Phone 8 really does seem to plug all the functionality gaps.

I really am looking forward to Nokia's WP8 lineup. I do like their phone design, even though their hardware isn't quite all there, they stuck too long with Symbian, killed MeeGo too early and WP7.5 ain't all that jazz.

The Ativ S does look nice in that conventionally Samsung kind of way. And the hardware is pretty good - it's basically a US Samsung Galaxy S III. That IFA conference though...

Hmm... I thought Nokia were going with 21 MP because they couldn't fit the 41 MP sensor in without a bulging case which would imply that there will be a smaller sensor. However it's also possible Nokia could have chosen 21 MP because they didn't add a dedicated processor and the SoC can't handle more than size i.e sensor size isn't the bottleneck and we're getting the same .8" sensor.

Either way, I'm not getting the 41 MP I desire :/

You could call the thread "The official thread of not making this about Apple and Android" and you'd get the same result.

I doubt anyone will be stupid enough to do that. :) I think people are getting tired of it in the thread where it's tolerated. I know I am.

Do any of you guys have any clue why Nokia and Microsoft are going to be holding this event together? or is that even still happening?

The Samsung ATIV-S is basically the Galaxy W3. It uses identical hardware to the S3 and the exterior casing is very similar but made of aluminum instead of polycarbonate.

To be fair, the N9 is not exactly the predecessor of the Lumia 800, but it was released few months before it.

I think they have to do it that way, since due to the extremely good camera they want to be using, the thickness of the phone needs to increase. Hopefully that also means a bigger battery.

I love the teaser with the girl on the bike. Nokia really makes nice and pretty adds.
If they keep the awesome style of Lumia ther WP8 device will be my next smartphone. I've recently had to return to a dumbphone for a week, which allowed me to take a good hard look at what I actually use phone for..ie..not for some fancy apps. Everything I need is on WP7 already, so it's all about interface, camera and phone design..in each of those three I don't see anything that will be able to compete with WP8 Nokia devices.

It fits better with the bezel design on Nokias. Curved glass is what makes lumia 800 a prettier phone than lumia 900

Windows 8 and 7.8 do away with the black border "gutter" on the right.
