Dark Souls director considering adding an easy mode
#1
I am not opposed to it for the sake of those who love everything about the game, but cannot get into it because of the challenge. That is, just so long as they do not compromise the 'normal' mode in future games in hopes that they will get more sales by watering it down. Too many games have went down this path and this is the last series I would ever want to see succumb to the pressure. But sure, add an easy mode for those who want it. No objections there.

Good idea. This game is too hard for me.

Fuck an easy mode. I also wouldn't want a hard mode or any difficulty selection. You choose how hard the game is organically. Either Souls game would not be nearly as fun or satisfying if they were easy. |

The game isn't even difficult, it's just unforgiving and failure just meant you had to spend extra time recouping losses and regaining progress. If they want to make it "easy", keep everything but remove soul loss on death and/or enemies respawning after using a bonfire. Those mechanics didn't make the game difficult at all and just added to the stress/tension. Removing the stress while keeping the encounter difficulty is how an "easy mode" should be done. That'll fix the problems that most people who had issues playing had, in my opinion.

But figuring everything out is part of the enjoyment. Of course as far as more mass appeal goes, that opinion is definitely in the minority. As I said, I think it would be great to add an 'easy' mode that has less challenge and explains things for those who want it. I just don't want it to spill over into the normal mode in future games.

I don't see this as a problem if it gets more people playing. Just have it as a separate mode though.

Lets the noobs have an option, just don't mess with the default mode and we're all good. Who knows, maybe it'll make normal mode be even harder.

Maybe this is just me but what exactly is the point of finishing/playing Dark Souls if the difficulty is gone or watered down?
No im not being elitist about this but that is an honest question, a game that advertises it's difficulty any chance it gets and uses it as a main selling point then adding an easy mode seems kind of pointless. |

Well, as long as they don't waste too much time trying to 'balance' the new opted easy mode - since that'll give them less time to naturally balance the game's default difficulty.
Ultimately, the best way to handle an easy mode in Dark Souls is to simply allow/give more healing items. That way you don't butcher the core of the experience on easy mode. |

Make the combat more responsive, tweaking some other things that can lead to frustration but for the love of god don't add an Easy Mode. The game is hard and it should stay hard. If they start pandering to easy-mode gamers, then they may as well drop the series now.

100% agree. Though I understand it will be very difficult to do considering the really austere narrative From uses in the Souls games.

I don't mind at all. It would be a good entry point for beginners. As long as you can't get every achievement on Easy, and as long as there's a big moniker out there saying I'M PLAYING ON EASY MODE, I'm fine with it.
This is coming from an enormous Mega Man fan who didn't give a shit that they put an Easy Mode into Mega Man 10. The problem was that you can get any of the damn achievements in that game on Easy Mode, which makes nearly impossible achievements like Mr. Perfect a complete joke. |

They need to add an extra hard remix mode with different enemy placement
and increased placement of under utilized enemies. The game is easy enough once you learn the enemy attack patterns. Its not even that this is game is difficult its just that modern games have boring dumbed down enemies and bosses that barely fight back.

I don't find the game to be that hard, unless it gets incredibly hard later on, it's an rpg so you could just level a bit and change your style, I didn't find it as hard as something like dmc3, plus it is a very slow game.
Difficulty options is a good thing though, let players determine what difficulty is fun for them, also it's a lot better than making a game with only 1 difficulty mode that tries to cater to everyone and result in an overall imbalanced experience *cough*dragon's dogma*cough* |

I think a large part of it's reputation and why people are interested in this game is because of the difficulty. A bunch of my steam friends picked up the game on PC... and they are embracing how savage the experience is compared to everything else out there. It's the same reason why so many people championed DayZ. There's still plenty that can be improved about Dark Souls, but I think the difficulty is a part of its identity.

And thus begins the descent into mediocrity.
The cool thing about these games is how totally uncompromising they are. You can literally feel the complete apathy of the developer towards the player.

I don't see this as a bad thing. I won't use it, but I am sure there are those who will. I bet many of the hardcores are fuming in anger by this though, wanting mediocre players to pull themselves up by their bootstraps like they did. If someone can't enjoy the game because of difficulty, giving them an opportunity to see the game is a rather good idea.

LOL, I am not quite ready to start envisioning the Souls series with bread crumb trails and holding hands just yet. But I admit that this proposition is still scary because of where it can lead. How many formerly great series have we seen ruined because the devs were pressured into making a more accessible experience for more sales? Just add an easy mode and it will be fine, but do not dare compromise on the 'normal' mode for those of us who fell in love from the get-go with Demon's Souls.
