Praying passenger aboard plane arrested for disorderly conduct #1

Quote:
DENVER (CBS4)- A military fighter jet escorted a United Airlines plane during the final minutes of its flight from Denver to Washington, DC Thursday evening.

Apparently a passenger started praying in the aisles of the Boeing 757 just before 9 p.m. Thursday.

The flight, from Denver International Airport to Washington Dulles International Airport, landed safely 13 minutes earlier than its scheduled 9:10 p.m. time, after the pilot made his announcement.

After the plane landed safely, all the passengers on board were allowed to deplane except for one person.

Police and EMS escorted the disorderly man off the plane where he was handcuffed and placed in a police cruiser.

It would've shot the plane down if that no-good sumbitch had continued to pray.

I am assuming he was muslim. When they say the person prayed in the aisles of the airplane, do they mean that the person got up and prayed in the space between the seats? Why would he do that? Just pray in your seat.

I guess maybe it is considered an obstruction if he was praying in the middle of the aisle and didn't move. You are supposed to keep that space empty, unless the attendants are bringing food, or someone is going to the bathroom.

But yeah, we need more info..

edit: it seems jews also pray in aisles according to coldvein.

There are some people who are loud and disorderly when any little bit of turbulence happens and basically yell all kinds of shit. It freaks others out.

You probably shouldn't block the aisle of a commercial plane for an extended period of time for any reason... otherwise I'm gonna start sleeping in the aisle.

praying in the aisles, i assume he was being pretty disruptive.

i was on a flight with a group of five or six youngish hacidic jews once, they kept getting up and walking up and down the aisles praying .. at one point they were all congregated back by the bathrooms praying. eventually the flight attendant asked them to sit down and they did, but some of them kept getting up and going up and down the aisles.. it kinda sketched me out to be honest.

If I'm not wrong they have to prostate themselves in the direction of Mecca when praying. It could have been interpreted as praying because his jihad mission was successful, especially if he didn't return to his seat despite being asked to.

This happened to me on a plane with crazy turbulence once. An African lady started praying and chanting loudly. Everyone was freaked out by her more than the turbulence. Getting arrested for this is ridiculous though.

edit: whoops, he was in the aisle. nevermind.

technically as you are traveling you can make up your prayer when you arrive at your destination. Also you can do the prayer sitting down if you really want to do the prayer in a real confined area.

We can probably conclude this is exactly what happened. Telling him to sit down was probably the first thing they did. And he probably ignored them to continue chanting or told them he wasn't going to stop.

The crew probably reacted in the only way they were ever told, which is to have him arrested for refusing to comply. People get arrested in planes for doing similar things in nonreligious contexts.

The japanese threw more planes on vehicles/buildings/people than muslims ever will. So next time I'm flying with an asian looking dude next to me, I'm calling the Air Force.

More details would help the story but I know you are not allowed to obstruct the aisle of an aircraft, its an obvious safety issue. They probably asked him to return to his seat and he refused. Still a fighter jet escort seems a bit overboard.

If the flight crew asked him to return to his seat, and he completely ignored them then yes it might be cause for alarm. Fighter jet as an escort though...wee bit overboard.

Either a Muslim or a Jew,
Regarding Muslims they can group their prayers during travel do no need to pray in the plane unless it was a very long flight like 9-12 hours.

I agree. I don't care if he's praying to Alah or white Jesus, it would make me wonder if something is about to go down, especially being out of his seat. And in an unescapable situation to where half the people are already uneasy about being in a tin can in the sky, this guy is doing nobody any favors.

If he was blocking the aisle then I'm not surprised at the outcome. That at least makes more sense than the prayer box incidents.

I'm assuming he was Muslim, which doesn't make sense, because praying on a plane doesn't work, considering there is no real way of determining where the Kabaa is from your location, and the height difference is also not allowed IIRC, according to most (if not all) scholars.

Well... I'm going to guess he was probably doing it in a manner that was disruptive to others? Probably hysterical and panicking others or something. If it was just regular praying I don't think he'd need to be in the aisle and would have little reason to get in trouble...

Twist: He requested the plane be turned to face Kaaba.

Twist: there is no twist.
