Downloaded the demo from the eShop for 3DS. Preordered the full release from Gamestop.
Figured this would be a lot like the NES game or like Ducktales or whatever....
It looks really pretty, the sound is really nice, the setup for the story is pretty awesome...
...but holy fucking shit, the gameplay is HORRENDOUS!
Its a platformer that makes you stop every 2 seconds to either draw or erase an object. Its BEYOND tedious. Its like Scribblenauts with no creativity and a 6 word list that makes you draw everything.
Everything is just a chore. It'd be a chore if it just let you select the object you wanted to use.
Its not intuitive, it doesn't make you think....its boring.
There were a few points where I was like "fuck it, I'll take the damage and not have to draw the same block or Mickey Mouse head again."
Perhaps the demo is just terrible, but it went from a day 1 instabuy to a "probably not" really quick.
Couldn't be more disappointed with it.
What?
Been on the US eShop since Thursday.Wait, what demo?
What?
I'll just cross post my impressions from the Nintendo Downloads thread:

- Ridiculously floaty jump
- Aerial bouncing attack
- Projectile attacks (Apples & Marbles in Castle, Paint in Power)
The thing is, Castle of Illusion was able to take the aforementioned things and mold some pretty damn solid level design around it. Power of Illusion throws a bunch of painting gimmicks on top of everything that grinds everything to a halt and constantly breaks up the already plodding pace. And that's not even taking the unskippable cutscenes into consideration.
I'm still willing to give the full game a chance, but the demo definitely left a lot to be desired for me. Like everyone else already said, it's definitely not something I'd drop $40 on.
'Cause we all just wanna be big rockstars And live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars
It doesn't help that it has like a 10 minute unskippable intro.
I'm not buying it at all.

I'll have to check the demo tomorrow, I'll leave it on my gamefly list for now though
Which sucks because I was looking forward to it.
Did anyone else get annoyed at how long the forced intro was?
Awww yeah! Same impressions. ;DI really cannot stand the jump physics. They are worse than the original Castle of Illusion by far. It feels like an exaggerated version of a Mega Man water level but without the fine control over character direction. That alone has honestly ruined the whole thing for me.

I kept pressing start the whole time in vain! Then the gameplay happened, I just wanted to stop after I beat the castle stage.Originally Posted by FrostuTheNinja

*downloading*
Really terrible physics, long, unskippable intro, the drawing mechanic was forced as hell.
Sold me off the game.
The game is good to look at, though.
Painting is tacky.
Art is gorgeous.
Platforming is slow but I didn't mind it. I hope all the level is designed well according to the physics.
Nothing WOWed me at the moment. It was not a day one purchase before and still not a day one purchase for now.
That was a good one.
I tried holding down button combinations in the hopes that I could just skip to the gameplay. It's the main thing keeping me from playing the demo again.Originally Posted by FrostuTheNinja

The touchscreen trace/erase mechanic, on the other hand, seems like a questionable idea with worse implementation. It might have worked had it simply consisted of tapping on the touchscreen to draw/erase objects, but as it is, I honestly have no idea what Dreamrift was thinking here.
Oh, and there's also the slow movement and floaty jump, which are obviously patterned after the original Castle of Illusion, but not in a way that betrays any more-than-superficial understanding of what made the original game good (tight level design without feature bloat or poorly-conceived gimmicks).
Finally, that looooong, unskippable opening cutscene is the icing on a cake of disappointment.
I'd love to believe that this is just circa-E3 code and that the full game has addressed many of these issues, but I can't say I'm optimistic. Sorry, Peter and Warren.
All of these echo my sentiments exactly. Was super excited about this game, but I couldn't even finish the demo. It's horrible. Terrible, terrible demo. I can't see the demo being any different.Originally Posted by LevityNYC

But yeah, the whole painting thing is terrible. It should be more like Okami. Hold a button and quickly draw a line or a circle or whatever and move on. Not perfectly outline a crown twenty times in a level.
Also, putting unskippable cinematics in a demo is beyond silly. Any time I play a demo I'm always in a hurry to just check out the game, and watch the cutscenes when/if I get the whole thing.
I laughed after I exited the demo and saw the "29 times remaining" on the screen before I deleted it.Originally Posted by emb

I won't buy this piece of shit, I think NOBODY played this garbage before release the demo, because it's so, so bad that reminded me Ninja Gaiden 3 demo.
It's awful, the game is already slow but they force you to STOP every time.
And worse: when you are painting/erasing, you listen OTHER SONG! C'mon, the only thing really good on this game was the remixed castle of illusion first stage theme, and I had to interrupt from time to time just to do some shit.
I'm really upset with POI =/
