Dusk Golem's Avatar
Note: Though this topic was mainly made with the thought of discussing developed RPG Maker gems, feel free to ask questions or share your own progress on development of games made in the program, or other RPG Maker related discussions.

In my goal to play every horror game out there, I recently have stumbled upon some small niche audience that I didn't even know existed and was at first confused by; a cult audience of people following and making RPG Maker games. Now, RPG Maker has existed for a long time. It even has had console versions, and traces all the way back to 1992 (technically 1988), essentially being one of the easiest game creation tools used to make 2D RPG games in a simplified matter that's like a mixture between a sim game in itself of game creation, and an actual game creation tool. Recently, it has added a lot of features and now is more of a game creation tool than ever, even to the point where you can make games with it you can sell to the public.

Still, it is one of the easiest game development engines designed to let people who don't know a lot about coding to make games. As such, I and I'm sure plenty of others had written it off. One of the biggest faults of older RPG Maker games is that a lot of them could end up feeling pretty samey, since they all used the same engine.

However, over the last couple of months and discovery of some praised indie horror games in the community, I've delved deeper into the subject, and have come back with some gameplay experiences, most of which that are free, that I have never experienced as a gamer. With that, I have become impressed with some of the more deliberate efforts some have taken to make their games. A growing trend is making horror or adventure games with RPG Maker, as its new features and tools allow you to go beyond the expected uses of the program with some creativity. I almost never see these games talked about outside of these small niche circles, but there's almost a stupid amount of fan art, music remixes, fan animations, and even fan games made of some of the more popular games in these circles. But I now completely understand, some of these games really do provide experiences that are completely different than almost any game I've ever played. Or maybe more accurately, it's sort of filling a niche that I though disappeared with the PS2/Gamecube/Dreamcast era. A sort of type of game style that I can't quite pinpoint in words, but existed very strongly with RPG, Horror, and Adventure games in the 90s and early 2000s.

I want to make a topic that's focused on the indie RPG Maker games, free or otherwise, that stand of high quality and are completely worth checking out. I've checked this board, and there's not been a topic on RPG Maker games really ever since a few years ago. This is also inspired as recently RPG Maker has gone on sale on Steam, and might bring more attention to the product, to provide people with works made in the program and what it can do with some creativity.

If you have played any games that you think should be added, I'll check them out and add them to the list if they do indeed stick out. I want to get some discussion going about these games and bring attention to some of these strange wonders that are coming out.

If you need any help launching any of these games, refer to the FAQ at the bottom of this post before you post asking a question.

This list and topic are still a work in progress; more will be added over time.

CATEGORY: Exploration Games
_______________________________

Exploration Games are RPG Maker games that have a focus on exploring, which have become much more popular after the success of Yume Nikki. While many are often based on dreams, this also includes story-based games where the story and exploring are the main points of the game.

Yume Nikki

Yume Nikki Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Mcp_XX0ews
Yume Nikki is a free adventure game about dreams. This game is still -technically- unfinished, but has a high level of quality in its current version (version 0.10) and can be played from beginning to end (the creator apparently wants to one day add more to the game). It originally came out in 2005, but it only started to get a lot of attention in 2008, when the game was picked up by the most popular Japanese gaming board, which helped spread it to even English-speaking audiences. The game has become big enough to inspire a ton of fan-made content, and official merchandise in Japan.

In the game, you play as a girl named Madotsuki. The game takes a lot of visual inspirations from Mother 3, but has a completely open style of design. Initially to new players, there may be no clear goal. You start off in a room, unable to leave, but can fiddle around with things, or play a Super Nintendo game about eggplants, and eventually go off to sleep. When you sleep is when the game really begins, soon you'll find yourself in a room full of doors, each of which leading to completely different surreal area. You can explore freely, with a surprisingly large amount of deeper areas and doors hidden away to go even deeper into your dreams. Each area has its own train of logic you have to crack and figure out, like a dream. Soon you'll probably interact with a strange object or character and gain something called an 'effect'. Going to your menu, you can equip the effect and transform Madotsuki in some sort of way. Some of these effects give you special powers, some are completely aesthetic, but the goal is to collect all 24. However, not all is safe here in the world of dreams, as there are nightmare areas and stalkers of sorts who will try to catch you, and will wake you up from your dream the moment you're caught.

The game has a lot of symbolism and does a great job capturing the feeling of a dream. It has inspired a TON of fan games and works, and remains one of the most popular RPG Maker games. It has a lot of secrets hidden away in the game, and lots of surprises for those who decide to travel to Madotsuki's dreamscae. Worth checking out if you're a fan of exploring in games, surreal or 'experience' games, or if the whole concept just sounds intriguing. You can read up more on the game and download it from here.

-Palette- Forget me not

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CiQPeW06u0
Palette was originally released in Japan in the mid-90s, and won an award at the Fourth ASCII Entertainment Software Contest, granting the creator 10 million yen. With that money, he went on to remake his game and release it on the PS1 in Japan in 2001. This game is very unknown at this time, but of very high quality. The reason in big part is as the game is rather text-heavy, and has never been translated (officially or by fans) for any language outside of Japanese.

The game stars a girl, referred to as B.D., whom apparently turned amnesiac by an accident, restore her memory as a well-known psychiatrist, Dr. Shian. Players essentially control B.D. in the scenery of her memory, which constitutes a maze with rooms and passages. In exploration, there are two modes of gameplay; in one mode, maps are colored in black and white often sprinkled with bright red, that denotes for example blood, with a noise continuously ringing, in which players can go between maps. With B.D. moving to another map, the gauge shown on the right side of the screen decreases one by one, it occurs also when B.D. touches barriers that are placed occasionally in maps. When the said gauge reached the bottom line, B.D. claims headache, and players would be sent back to the map of Shian's office. Shian would call her again to continue the game.

You can download the original free version of the game and its update patches here. You can download the game's English translation here.

As you can't really play the game without knowing Japanese (and there is very little about the game online currently), you can watch a Japanese Let's Play of the original version here, and the PS1 remake here.

.flow

.flow Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi-CNeZ-jU0
.flow is one of the most popular fan games of Yume Nikki, with a similar high level of quality, but much darker with more horror elements and strange dream-world rules. Essentially, if you liked Yume Nikki you will most likely enjoy this game, though there are a few differences between the two outside of different locations and effects. There are more secrets and puzzles involving your powers in .flow, as well as more ways to end your dream early, including some pretty tense nightmare scenes you can stumble across.

You can read up more about the game and download it here.

Miserere

Miserere Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpg-9PAywBw
More of an adventure exploration game but still with the theme of dreams, in Miserere you are in a space station far away from the world and living day by day taking care of maintenance and entertaining yourself. Recently, though, you've been having the same dream every night. As you find keys in your dreams and open up new areas, things begin to happen in reality and things get progressively more and more strange and creepy... This is a game for the exploration lovers out there, but also for horror fans. It is inspired by Yume Nikki, but different enough that it can't really be considered a clone.

You can read more about Miserere and download it from here.

Yume 2kki

Yume 2kki Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaUu7qMmwWk
Yume 2kki is an unofficial sequel to Yume Nikki, featuring a different protagonist but same type of gameplay. It is one of the most popular Yume Nikki fan games, and for good reason. It is made with very high quality, attention to detail, content, and has probably been the most consistently updated fan game based off of Yume Nikki. Worth it for those who enjoy Yume Nikki type of games.

You can download the game and learn more about it here.

Lisa

Lisa Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKMBysD8cWg
Lisa is a surrealistic game about abuse & love. A very recent game, the game features a girl named Lisa who is collapsing over her own stress and fears, entering a surreal world of her own figmentation to escape reality. Not very long, but definitely an interesting experience. Again for fans of exploration, but also strange symbolism and surrealism. Or just someone who wants to be weirded out.

You can check out the game here.

CATEGORY: Survival-Horror Games
_______________________________

Survival-Horror games are adventure games where you are under threat. With atmosphere, puzzles, and scary scenes, the games are meant to put you on edge, but with multiple layers of gameplay to make you think to progress and survive.

Ib

Ib Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnburNVFCd0
Ib is the story of a girl of the same nam going with her family to an Art Museum where displays by a famous artist known as Guertena are on exhibition. However, while wandering the art museum, Ib soon finds herself alone and, shortly, is lead to enter into a painting. On the other side, she finds a whole world of abstract and strange rooms and puzzles that she seems trapped in. Wielding a rose that seems to represent her life, she must survive the trials of this strange painting world and try to find an escape, soon with allies that also seem trapped in the painting, slightly flamboyant and courageous coward Garry, and fun-loving but slightly needy little girl Mary.

The game has a tense atmosphere at the beginning, but becomes more interesting and puzzle-focused the deeper you get into it. With multiple endings and a rather short length, this free game is worth it for those who like exploration or puzzle based horror games, or an interesting 2D adventure game. The creator seems to want to expand more on this universe in the future.

Can download the game here.

The Witch's House

Witch's House Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPDNqyQ22Yo
A free survival-horror adventure game where you play as a girl, known as Viola, going into a trap-ridden house that is run by a witch. Surviving in this place is not easy, there are all all sorts of demented and varied traps, monsters, puzzles, and rooms in the house, though you must find a way to break the spell and escape. With a surprisingly impacting story and a series of ridiculous but great death scenes for when you die (and you will die... A lot), it really is both a very tense and entertaining endeavor into the depths of the Witch's den. For those who like horror or survival-adventure games, and actually can be quite scary and heart-wrenching.

You can download the English version of the game here.

You can check out the games original Japanese website here.

Ao Oni

Ao Oni Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1t73s-D4vI
A Korean horror comedy game starring a giant purple monster. Featuring a group of teens who explore a nearby mansion hearing that it's haunted, they get trapped in with a creature known as Ao Oni (Blue Demon) who begins to pick them off and troll them through the mansion and nearby buildings. You play as Hiroshi, who must solve puzzles and survive to save his friends and escape.

The game is surprisingly atmospheric, with the monster able to pop up any time to start chasing you, along with a series scripted moments. The game trolls you a lot, but has a charm that makes you want to just keep on going despite how much shit it throws at you. Has many different versions with new additions and puzzle solutions, and a stupid amount of fan games (it's big in Korea apparently).

You can find out more about the game and download its many different versions and hundreds of fan games here.

Corpse Party

Corpse Party 2010 Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfkeahnIzvg
Corpse Party started out as a free 1996 game, which has recently revitalized itself with a remake, spin-off, and upcoming sequel on the PSP/Vita, and PC in Japan. The game stars a group of students who are one night after a festival sharing ghost stories at the school. Sad about not being able to stay together forever, they make a wish with a paper doll, and shortly get consumed by a hole opened up by a giant Earthquake. They find themselves in an old abandoned school their current school was supposed to be built over, and soon get involved in a series of dangerous games with the spirits that linger here for survival.

The version the most note-worthy is the recent PSP/PC remake, though its not free. There is a free version you can try available in the link below, but its remake is truly worth checking out as it improves over the original in about every way with a lot of new content. Worth checking out for anyone who likes scary games.

You can find out more about the game, download the older free versions, and more over here.

Hidden in the Shadows 1 & 2

Hidden in the Shadows II Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riNEYrJfHGw
Heavily inspired by Ao Oni, Hidden in the Shadows is a game brimming with darkness where you, after a friend who disappeared suddenly, explore a strange castle... But you're not alone. With puzzles and survival tactics, you must find your escape from the castle!

These games are quite scary, though not bug free. Still, I believe it is worth experiencing as they do a great job with atmosphere and the monster is actually quite terrifying. The sequel improves over the original in a lot of ways, as well.

You can check out Hidden in the Shadows 1 here, and Hidden in the Shadows 2 here.

Mad Father

Mad Father Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-w1wQ4bYKM
A girl who loves her father finds her and her family caught under a demented curse that is bringing back the corpses of people her dad has experiment on seeking revenge. Utilizing a lot of interesting mechanics, but also drawing inspiration from other titles like Ib and Witch's House, it is an creepy journey with an often surprising story, as well as quite a bit original art that is quite well-made. Worth it for anyone who like horror games or game with a stronger darker story.

Can download Mad Father here.

CATEGORY: Visual Novel/Story Games
_______________________________

Visual novels are games that are more books, often with choices, than proper games, but with the use of visuals and audio to help tell its story. Some of these games have deeper gameplay than that, but the whole point of the game is to experience the story (or get the girl).

To The Moon

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqkJuSV-23U
Available on Steam, To The Moon is a story-based adventure game that stars two doctors, Dr. Watts & Dr. Eva, coming to the house of a man named Johnny who, on his death bed, wants to get his memories reworked so that he will believe he went to the moon before he died. He doesn't remember why, but all he knows is that he wants it done. Under a time limit, you play as Watts and Eva as they use a futuristic technology to virtually travel into and alter his memories. With an amazing soundtrack and emotionally charged story, the game has received a lot of praise both from gamers and critics. I don't want to say too much for spoilers, but if you like story-based games or have a soft spot for quirky adventure games, you should definitely give this one a shot.

You can check out the Steam page here.

And the game's official website here.

Cherry Tree High Comedy Club

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08pItQiNBv4
Comedy fanatic and high school student Miley Verisse has decided to set up a comedy club in her school, but her nemesis and the head of the student council, Octavia Richmond, isn’t about to make things easy… The school rules require a minimum of 5 students to set up a new club and Miley is 3 people short! Spring break has just started and Miley has until the end of April to recruit the 3 new members she needs to start the club or Octavia will have the last laugh!

The game takes on a very Persona-esque look and feel of the social linking done in that series, but with a style that's completely surrounded around that. Published by Capcom, the translation was helped on by part of the Team that did the translations for the Ace Attorney series, and the tone they bring fits the game perfectly. This game isn't free, but worth checking out for people who are particularly interested in visual novels as most of what you do is explore, interact, and manage your time.

You can check out the games Steam page here.

Want something good and nostalgic, relying on executing a tried idea well rather than something that tries to mix up the formula too much? This is for you.

A Blurred Line

A Blurred Line Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cig_7Qk3mOI
A Blurred Line is one of the most recognized turn-based RPGs out there, namely because of its really well-done sci-fi story. The story is about a group of characters who awaken without a clue of what is going on, but thrust immediately into a strange futuristic reality. I don't want to say too much, but the story is actually really gripping. It tries its hand at a few elements to define itself, including an ability system where each character has an ability that completely changes how you view a battle depending on who you're playing as. Blurred Line is worth it for anyone who likes story-based RPGs or the sci-fi world it is set in.

You can download A Blurred Line here.

Leo & Leah

Leo & Leah Gameplay: http://youtu.be/YTSrID2XV0E
Starring a magical Lion in search of the cub he grew up with, Leo is a charming tale that lasts for about 5-7 hours. While most of the graphics are edits, the game creates its own personality with its characters, humor, interesting variety of gameplay, and of course, refreshing RPG take from the perspective of animals. Its charming, and injects a lot of flavor into the experience to keep things interesting.

You can download Leo & Leah here.

Hero's Realm

Hero's Realm Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=492vTKMQAP4
Old-School to the bone, Hero's Realm is a retro-RPG with a surprisingly interesting story, and about anything you'd expect from a JRPG. Of good length and quality, this is simple in its concept but fine in its execution. For fans of the old JRPGs of yesteryear.

Can download Hero's Realm here.

Last Scenario

Last Scenario Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9eGMBrk-dU
This game plays it safe. REALLY safe. If the name wasn't a give away, it's a Final Fantasy clone. That's not a bad thing though, it does have an interesting visual style with some original artwork and music, and while it doesn't do anything that other RPGs have to offer, it does do them confidently enough to be fun. It has good length, interesting characters, and has found fans for those looking for something like the oldschool Final Fantasy games of yesteryear.

You can download Last Scenario here.

OFF

OFF Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVQ5KNx2zGA
OFF is a free French RPG where you take control of a mysterious person called “The Batter”, who is described to be on an important mission. The Batter, and yourself as his controller, are dropped off in zone 0, the first of 4 zones in a perplexing, unknown world about which you slowly find out more and more in the process of the game.

Known for its amazing characters, original soundtrack, and a twisted yet entertaining journey into the depths of this strange world, it is worth it for fans of RPGs, especially those that like Mother 3, which it draws some inspiration from. It is very off-beat, but very well made.

You can download the English translated form of this game here.

You can download the games original soundtrack here.

The Longing Ribbon

Longing Ribbon Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7qCIrBsdQo
A turn-based RPG with strong horror/mystery themes that won the award for best atmosphere on RPG Maker's website in 2005. You and two friends find yourselves lost in the woods one day and decide to seek refuge in a nearby mansion. Certainly nothing could go wrong; people do that sort of thing all the time, don't they? But what you are about to discover is that this is no ordinary mansion, and its inhabitants are no ordinary people... Welcome to The Longing Ribbon.

The game has a fantastic atmosphere and pacing, really capturing the feel of a mystery horror film. While I personally feel the battles are a bit detracting from the overall experience (there are no battles until a couple hours in, and they are much more consistent in the later parts of the game), it really is an engaging and sometimes chilling experience with some interesting hooks to keep you interested.

You can check out The Longing Ribbon here.

Alter Aila Genesis

Alter Aila Genesis Gameplay: http://youtu.be/lXk1mSaQ1Lw
A platforming-stealth RPG featuring a futuristic punk world and colorful cast of characters. The game does have turn-based battles when you encounter enemies, but its main gameplay involves stealth invoked through platforming. Surprisingly fun and interesting, mixing in original art with edits, it is different and worth it for anyone looking for a stealth-RPG-Platformer, a strange hybrid but one that works and executes it quite well!

You can download it here.

Space Funeral

Space Funeral Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syDXH-ZPXvA
A surrealistic turn-based RPG that is just strange. With a weird artstyle and sloppy animation, but surprisingly interesting setting and soundtrack, it isn't very long (lasting about an hour or two) and is quite a different experience for those who seek it.

You can download Space Funeral here.

Exit Fate

Exit Fate Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7eXYN6zgdI
Exit Fate is a strategy game that borrows a lot from the Suikoden series of games. Still, it is a well-crafted homage that has a lot of gameplay behind it, and does good on making it feel like a whole stand-alone experience. The strategy gameplay is handled great, with attention to detail and a wide variety of battles, characters, enemies, and terrain. It uses sounds and some sprites from other games, but behind this there is a great gem for strategy enthusiast here.

You can download Exit Fate here.

Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer

Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVYdkkLnjvw
It uses copyrighted songs, but this morbid little game s out there for those who want something different and messed up. You play as a 'Dungeoneer', who is a person who builds a dungeon that you lure people into only to torture. With gruesome themes, nudity, and violence and gore, it won't sit well with all audiences. In dungeons, you lay out a series of traps you get during 'Adventure' gameplay to lay out around your dungeon. You can progress story paths, get ranked online for what you did in your last 'capture', and stalk your crush you're also jealous of (who happens to also be a Dungeoneer). It is dark, it is gruesome, but it is also engrossing.

You can download Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer here.

F.A.Q.

Q: How do I play this game in windowed mode/fullscreen?
A: Almost all RPG Maker games allow you to switch to & from fullscreen by pressing Alt+Enter.

Q: I want to play this game from another country, but it won't launch for me. How do I get it to launch correctly?
A: You need the right RPG Maker RTP, and the right region settings on your PC. You can find most of the RTPs in these links:

VXAce/VX/XP RTP:
http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/download/run-time-package

2003 RTP:
http://www.famitsu.com/freegame/rtp/2003_rtp.html

2000 RTP:
http://www.famitsu.com/freegame/rtp/2000_rtp.html
http://www.rpgrevolution.com/downloa...ackage_15.html

You also may need to install a language pack on your computer (free) to make it work, likely for Japanese or Korean. If you got an error with a file in another language, its likely because your current language settings didn't recognize the game file characters, and you'll have to reboot your computer into the correct language setting.

Q: I opened up the RTP and ran the file in the zip, but it's still not working.
A: That wasn't an installation but an extractor. To install it, go to the folder where you extracted the RTP (most likely in the downloads folder) and install it.

Heh, weird. I am using RPG Maker VX ACE to make an RPG based around the Playerone Podcast and it's fans/forum dwellers/etc. Will mostly be in-jokes for those people, but I figure it will be a good learning experience before working on something a bit more personal, in the style of To The Moon.

Yume Nikki and To the Moon are utterly incredible.

I love it when a small group of people can take a relatively easy pre-made engine, and just focus on producing the best content possible.

Yume Nikki gets extra bonus points by skewing heavily into the kind of lo-fi surrealism that could only exist as a retrogame.

It's interesting to note that most of these games skew towards the horror end of the spectrum as well, reiterating that creating an effective atmosphere for immersion doesn't need to be a wildly expensive endeavor.

Speaking of horror, no mention of Corpse Party? It's fantastic to see that game's evolution from rpg-maker to the eventual PSP port.

Corpse Party is one I was going to add. The original Corpse Party is one if the oldest examples, but definitely deserves a place. Still updating as had to cut off the listing for tonight.

A group of horror games definitely are finding their way with RPG Maker, though also a lot of RPGs, just have more to list of the best and decided to start with the games I had played first, the horror/adventure games.

I like that when you hear a game was created in "RPG maker", you might assume that structurally the finished product resembles something like Dragon Quest 1.

With the exception of maybe The Battler (which I haven't played), every single example above doesn't have battles at all, much less random turn-based ones.

The engine is simply a means to a storytelling end, with an occasional puzzle thrown in.

Yes it is, but you'll need a script and some coding, either from yourself or from the community. Thankfully the community have already made a small handful of scripts to use with RPG Maker for a tactical RPG battle system, and are free to use.

Yume Nikki is wonderfully surreal, and as others say takes advantage of its lo-fi tech. It has an amazing atmosphere, and manages to be unsettling with just simple graphics. Everyone should play it, it's free!

Been tempted to pick up the latest version for some grad school art projects. How long is the eve rage time to get a base game to then build off of... If that makes sense.

The Witch's House is very recent, but definitely worth your time. Intrrested to hear your impressions as its one of those games one can tell all sorts of interesting stories about.

While we're at the topic of horror/surreal RPG Maker games, what about Space Funeral?

I love this game. It's far more surreal than horror, like Yume Nikki, and it's entertaining to see what the creator of this game came up with. Excellent soundtrack, even. It takes around one or two hours to complete, depending on how much optional stuff you want to do.

Get it here.

There's Last Scenario and Exit Fate, both from SCFWorks. The latter is quite remarkable because it has some tactical elements like the Suikoden games.

Keeping with the horror theme, there's also Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer, a game where you play as a serial killer/torturer abducting people and torturing them in your basement. Very disturbing.

Rock Paper Shotgun has a spoilerific Wot I Think up, but you should avoid until playing the game if you plan to play it.

I used to play tons of rpg maker games ten years ago. There were quite a few I liked, but the only one that springs to memory now is Three the Hard Way.

There's this German series of RPGM games called Vampire's Dawn

which I had a lot of fun with. Pretty basic but it had some fun writing and a decent story/world.

A few years ago another German dev released a demo to a game called Velsarbor which was incredibly ambitious for a RPGM game. Sadly it's pretty much abandoned :/

People seem really snobby towards RPG Maker games. I'm not entirely sure why. I've enjoyed the ones I've played over the years, but then I don't mind the 'retro' look (to me that's what RPGs should look like).

Not a fan of Vampires Dawn, but Velsarbor was indeed incredible. You can see that he really knows how to use the RPG Maker, since he managed to do stuff I never saw in any other game made with that engine, without any patches. Excellent graphics and animations plus a well-chosen soundtrack made it a classic for me.

I also worked on an RPG Maker game back then, but I stopped. I had 5 out of 8 Dungeons finished and 10 towns/villages already. But it doesn't look that great, I became much better in creating 2D maps through the years. Shame, I had over 300 maps completed.

Will take a look at these suggestions! Actually played a few, but so much to sort through. Still in the process of updating the OP, adding categories and which region the game originates from.

There are a lot of quality stuff made using the pre-built engines like RPGMaker.

IMO it's only a matter of time before someone cranks out something groundbreaking with it. Many of the other pre-built engines had some amazing game that caught everyone's attention.

My brother and I have been using RPG Maker VX (now moved on to Ace) for a few years now. Our friend who has been using the program for awhile now got us into it. All three of us have been making shit since the original PSone RPG Maker game though. Only now do we finally feel like we're making some decent stuff! I didn't pursue graphic design or computer programming so this scene has been the best outlet to scratch that creative itch, you know? Ever since I've started working on projects I don't see myself ever wanting to NOT be working on something. It's always good to have a goal or project to work on instead of just going to work and coming home to play games all day, hah!

We've tried a lot of stuff too, but nothing has caught our interest, to be perfectly honest. There seems to be a lot of embarrassing/uninspired Final Fantasy-like clones out there as well. We haven't tried a lot of the horror/adventure-like games though so maybe that scene/genre/whatever is more interesting or inspired. My brother and I are shaping up a demo that will be ready shortly so we're really looking forward to seeing the responses we get. We're pretty fucking proud of what we're doing here too! =D

Since no one else has gotten around to it, I might as well write a love letter to Corpse Party.

CORPSE PARTY

A tale of several students who while celebrating the last day before their friend transfers to another school, participate in an occult ritual for a laugh. Each friend holds a piece of paper that resembles a human, chants a phrase a few times, then tears it apart.

Suddenly they are whisked away to an abandoned elementary school. Split up from one another, they wander the grounds only to find an endless string of corpses of others students that have been sucked in and killed, and worse yet the school keeps changing it's labyrinthian layout.

Things go from bad to worse when they start encountering vengeful ghosts of the first four students killed in the school. Even worse still, the murderer of those four ghosts may be lurking in the deepest recess of the school.

Numerous gruesome "bad endings" hit the point home that this is a horror game without any compromise.

Originally published for the ancient PC-8701, the game had a couple confusingly titled remakes and semi-sequels across multiple platforms, but the recent PSP release is a remake of the original game with top notch production value.

Although undeniably still a game with rpg-maker roots, the PSP game is fully voiced, filled with high quality portraits, and features GODLY AMAZING MUSIC.

Unfortunately, the game is almost unplayable without a spoiler-free walkthrough, since most of it consists of wandering around, finding a ghost, running away, and then going back to one of a dozen rooms that you've already been to, and examining an object for the 20th time to progress the story.

That said, the story itself is top notch and actually has a decent sense of structure to it. And then the atmosphere itself is second to none. It's definitely a game best played with headphones.

If you have a PSP or Vita and are interested in any aspect of the premise, I highly recommend it.

Note that there is a 10 minute anime floating around on the internet and youtube, that serves as an intro to the game. It coincidentally features MASSIVE SPOILERS so I'd avoid it until afterwards, if you can.

My favorite quote of the game: Yuuuuuuuuuuka! Yuuuka? I'M GOING TO KILL YOU, YUKA!

i messed around with RPG Maker a bit back in the day and then we found Game Maker. The stuff we made in RPG Maker was always a lot more funny because a lot of the sprites and engines were already made.

This game surprised me. Despite the graphics, it did an amazing job of creeping me out. It shows you how far you can go with horror games with using amazing sound, storytelling, and descriptions. New horror games need to learn from stuff like this. The music was chilling and just the thought of being left in a school you can't leave and the things you know from normal life not applying to that world. And I don't understand Japanese, but just the way the characters talked was amazing and I got their feelings through it. With headphones, it sounded like they were talking in the same room with me right in my ear. Amazing game.

I can't wait to play the next one. Hopefully it's Vita compatible soon.

Yes. Actually, there's been a recent rise of visual novels made with RPG Maker. Planning to add a few tonIght with a section for it when back home.

What surprised me more were the people who've made platformers and beat-em ups with it, but more on that later.

For a little RPGmaker game, something about Ib touched me in ways big budget games usually never manage.

Guess it was because I genuinely was invested in the characters.

Ib has a lot of personality. The creator had a clear vision and executed it wonderfully. It's kind of hard to explain, but the games simple but abstract art style, music, writing, and atmosphere were all quite well done. I loved the characters too, and Ib even has a lot of personality despite being a silent protagonist. It's very evident the creator was passionate about the game, to the point they ask no fan games about it yet as they still want to explore the universe they created more.

You're not alone though, for a small game that came out earlier this year, the game has a ton of really well-done fan art and animations already.

Wait. Wait a moment. Capcom published a Persona-like Social Sim, made with RPG Maker, on steam. That seems kinda... Surreal.

I remember that way back on the RPG Maker 2000 there was a Suikoden style game. It was a trilogy, actually. They where good, if I remember correctly, and pretty famous, too. I don't remember the name. Anyone played something like that?

I know, which is great! I think "Don't Take It Personally Babe It Just Ain't Your Story" even purposefully uses some of the default graphics.

Why stretch a canvas and create your own paints, when your time and talent is better spent composing the final painting.

(Edit: I get that you're saying they aren't made in rpg-maker, which is why i suggested a separate but related-by-freeware-engine thread.)

Man, Lachsen really stepped his game up - sprites, technical stuff, everything; he seems to have become way better since Velsarbor which was extraordinary (well, the demo at least :/)

What was that crazy French RPG Maker game called.. Final Fantasy Zero? That was pretty magnificent. In general, many RM games from France looked really good.

I just finish 100% Cherry Tree yesterday (recruiting all 6 members), it is short but really worth the money I paid (I think it is 50% off in steam right now). There are a few funny moment, but overall the game is more focus on the time management and relationship building.

It is a very short game if you rush the whole thing, but I found myself spending a lot of time talking to random people, since even the minor non-recruitable character around have very interesting things to say every day.

Thanks for making this thread, after Cherry Tree I can't wait to try out the other games. Now if I can just man it up to finish Corpse Party in PSP, that game on headphone is creeping me out.

Is there any worthy traditional story based RPG with battle?
