They? It is really just one guy named Mark basically, who does all this out of his house. I guess he does get other people to do these "this day in gaming" segments, and there is Classic Game Room Undertow, which is a spin off, being run by two other people. But really, it is just the one guy who does most everything.

I don't even know how he does it, really. He reviews like 2-3 games a day and the number of game reviews he has is insane for a youtube channel.

His game of the year list is pretty good too, a bit too many racing games for my taste... (but, that's his list) Picking a Dreamcast game as his game of the year is pretty awesome, though.

His casual review style is great though, and he doesn't try to categorize everything into review numbers.

Love the CGR. The focus is on the fun and not the pretense. It keeps alive the spirit of when it was all about a good time, prior to the unfortunate online shift to primarily what is wrong with everything and everyone responsible for it. CGR & ENB are just about the only reasons I ever hit up youtube. Great stuff.

For me, the fact that his reviews are as positive as possible without losing touch with reality is actually a great way to let me be the judge of the game, which is what I actually want a review to do.

There are so many games I love in the 6-8 range I would never know about if I just listened to "professional reviews". The way he presents a game, I find that's less likely to happen.

If he enjoys something you think sucks? No problem, skip it. No harm done.

But if another reviewer disses something you might enjoy? It'd be more difficult to know, from his review.

The part I am referring to is at the start when the lady asks for a ride, lol.

They're awesome because whenever I search for a review of a niche title, they seem to be the only semi-professional outlet to pop up.

Try searching for a review of Dark Spire on youtube for example.

I liked how he was so passionate about Klonoa 2 (an underrated gem imo): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKHjUe6jNhk

He botched the review, but it was awesome for people who played the game back in the day such as a myself.

Seraphis, if you want to raise awareness about this, put some links in the OP! You think in this day and age I have time to highlight its name, right click it and select "search on Google", THEN select "videos" AND pick the ones that seem most interesting? That's, like, five-six clicks and ten seconds minimum! Who has time to do all that?

Yep, that's him and I agree his voice is a bit annoying. My favorite Derek reviews are the ones for the crappy Wii shovelware titles...the poor guy reviewed most of them xD
But when it comes to more serious reviews for games like Mario or Zelda, Derek usually nails it and as you said, he's way more insightful than anybody from the CGR crew.

He's probably the only reviewer I watch videos from of games that I didn't have any interest in to begin with. And the fact that he actually pulls out old games to review makes me happy.

I meant Garnett's voice. Mark can be tough on games. He torched the 3DS version of Zen Pinball, rightfully so.

A classic classic game room video from back in the days; I remember watching them in 2000 and being amazed that I was watching full motion videos reviews on the net. Check it out!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO7gmFh5Qgk

They review Wu-Tang Shaolin Style for the ps1!

And I remember the super early videos when they would tape them from Dave's living room at his parents place! HAhahaha

Another classic: Seaman for the dreamcast - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZVZGwdA7-Q , the best part is the awkward way Mark gets slapped in the face by his girlfriend

They started in 1999 up until late 2000, then the companies they did vids for folded, and Mark restarted by himself in 2005 or 2006

I've thought about completely dropping reliance on all other gaming shows/personalities aside CGR and just sticking with his opinions.

Seriously, the unpretentiousness feels so fresh even if that has been his style since forever. Even good sites like Giant Bomb like to poop on the entire japanese industry or entire genres, but Mark gives every game a chance and much needed exposure.

I really like the review for the Buck Shotgun for Wii.

But as many has said, CGR is definitely one of the best review-channels on Youtube.

Best review-focused channel on Youtube is Ashens' though.

This is the only gaming related reviewer channel I follow. They review all kinds of games for all kinds of platforms, and they don't rely on obnoxious gimmicks or spend most of the time with the camera on themselves. They show off great gaming footage and they do a great job of simply showing what the games are about and give a good general idea on whether you'd like said game or not. This channel is simply about the games and that's why it is so good.
