Dragon Quest X is not meeting expectations

He doesn't want to re-release a game unless it can be improved dramatically, which is why we get remakes and not re-releases. The anniversary collection is one of the only times that games were actually re-released in their original forms.

I actually don't think DQ8 is going to be touched for quite a while.

except if its portable as he could argue that portability is an dramatic improvement (kinda happened with 3 on the gameboy too right?)

Well, if they follow the "pattern", technically a DQ8 remake would accompany DQ11.

... if there will be a DQ11. I'm not sure how much more they can get out of Sugiyama. And should any of the Big 3 not contribute, I think DQ is done.

Do you honestly think the sales potential on the Wii U is equal to or better than the potential on the Wii? Even after seeing how poorly the system is doing?

As has been said several times, the game actually sold very well on Wii. The problem is with keeping people playing, and I doubt that has as much to do with the platform as other things.

The potential of lifelong sales and members would have been much higher in the Wii U than the Wii, which is all but dead in Japan.

More people would be playing, and buying, in the long term on the Wii U than the Wii.

Oh, I see. That makes sense. The others saw a fair overhaul of graphics. What about the port of 3 to the SNES? It didn't seem like a huge improvement.

Not even released as a ps2 classic? That seems incredibly dumb.

No, 3 is a handheld port of DQ3's remake on SFC, not of the original version of DQ3. 3 on GBC is equivalent to DQ4 on DS.

Uhh... the SNES version of DQ3 is dramatically upgraded, I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Didn't Sales GAF have good predictions for this originally when they were tracking it before it came out?

Wasn't port-begging banned or something?

So is back-seat modding but that didn't stop you asking.

The "online crap" made DQIX, by FAR, the most fun and replayable DQ game.

Not to me it wasn't. Boring story, empty characters, repetitive and tedious quests, and the even more tedious grottos. After the epic DQ VIII, I expected so much more from my favorite VG series.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Ugh, no. All the online crap is what ruined DQ IX.

*High five*

Finally. All I see for DQ9 is universal praise. Man, eff that game.

Certainly strange, because they did indeed claim that the game had already recouped development costs. The sales it achieved are amazing for an MMO in Japan, so the subscriber base must have tapered off immensely for this to suddenly be a big issue.

This was said in the other thread too. But did Wada really claim that they recouped development cost already?
"While the early stages were used to recover costs, this title (FFXI) eventually contributed greatly to the overall revenue scheme in the latter half of its lifespan, and proved that MMORPG has a sustainable capacity over a long duration,” Wada said during a Square Enix financial results briefing.

The same, Wada added, will hold true for Dragon Quest X. The game’s initial development costs were recorded this year, so next year is when Square Enix expect to see a surge in revenue from Dragon Quest X subscriptions, as well as from Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn."

Because my interpretation is only that they put the cost of developing the game in this year's report. And that has nothing to do with how much money they got from the game this year.

Hehe, glad I'm not alone here. I also forgot to mention how they took out key elements that previously made it a great RPG series. Monster recruiting, casinos and dumbing down the small medal quest. And let's not forget the horrible renaming of Dharma Temple to the dumb Alltrades Abbey.

I had TONS of fun playing DQ IX with my brother but I can understand why people playing this alone can find it boring.

I played DQIX solo and had a lot of fun. I actually don't mind being able to create my whole party. I had like 200+ hours in the game.

Only that DQX did not tank.

According to the article DQX is not meeting "sales expectations."

Either way its irrelevant to the overall issue of Square Enix being a shell of their former selves, and their last two MMORPGs in the two biggest franchises being commercial flops.

The fans don't want MMO DQ or FF. Hopefully this teaches Square a lesson but I doubt it.

I think they should have just made it a regular DQ game for the Wii U, exclusively. Nintendo would definitely prefer that as well.
The new mainline Dragon Quest has always and will always be released for the best selling platform (NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, DS, Wii). Lol @ Wii U getting a non-port non-MMO mainline release. Wii probably went through a much quicker death than Square Enix had anticipated when they decided to do it for Wii and Wii U is seemingly not doing very well, so they just bet on the wrong horses (they probably thought Wii would still be healthy enough for a year or two more and Wii U would be successful enough to replace Wii after that).

Also, DQX's development started long before XIV's release, so they couldn't really take its problems into consideration when deciding what they were going to do with DQX.

The game sold 600k and has 400k subscribers

FF XI was the most succesful FF game ever with 600k subscribers.

if you translate this

the comment SE made was
「堅調に進捗している」

It means the game is progressing steadily.

the not meeting expectation part is a commentary from MSN.

Personally the draw towards 10 for me is that it is an MMO. I had a ton of fun playing 9 with my friends and would love for a more expanded experience of that on the Wii U.

Maybe so, but if it were a single player focused game like DQ8 it would've been much more commercially successful and development costs most likely would've been far less.

No not really. See farnham's post. 400k subs is a bucket load of cash every month.

Right. But not everyone feels that way. I don't know why they would go the MMO route with a franchise that has always traditionally been single player. If that's what they wanted to do, they should have just cooked up an original title.

Is that really true or did they just go to the PS1 because of the disk space and the PS2 because it was the PS2? I'm expecting DQXI to go to the 3DS and DQXII will probably end up on either the 3DS successor or one of the consoles if they decide to go that route.

"I expect to be paid a million dollars every year, but I'm currently getting only a 100k"

Not meeting expectations doesn't mean that your goal was a complete failure, it just means that you aimed too high.

Sales aren't the problem, it's probably more to do with Wii being completely dead than them being hugely disappointed with the sales.

Either way its irrelevant to the overall issue of Square Enix being a shell of their former selves,[/quote]No they aren't. They've still released many of the best JRPGs of recent years.

and their last two MMORPGs in the two biggest franchises being commercial flops.
DQX is all but a commercial flop. It's an MMO released in a single small market that has still managed to sell several hundred thousand of copies. They haven't even made it worldwide yet. They could still get a lot out of it by not only a worldwide release, but perhaps porting it to PC & other platforms (in addition to Wii U)

FFXI proves otherwise. XIV didn't prove people don't want MMOs, it was just shit in its v1.0 state and proved people can't be bothered to pay for shit. 2.0 is what will "prove" anything, once it's released.

They go wherever they will get the most money.

DQ is not a big deal outside of Japan. A DQ MMO even less so. I'd be surprised if it gets localized.

Time to release it in the West and get another 10k subscribers.

If all fails, worst case scenario, SE makes DQX F2P and releases DQXI sooner rather than later.

"Big deal" is relative. Dragon Quest's a million seller overseas, which makes it bigger than pretty much every JRPG at this point that isn't Final Fantasy, Pokémon or starring Mario. Maybe Dark Souls too, though I'm not sure if that even broke a million in the west.

Also, prepare to be surprised. ;)
