Man, I was so hoping they had something ready for Comic Con. Perhaps they still do.
Yeah, it's the first time I'm following news for a film this closely. It takes 5 minutes tops to search for news in the last 24 hours, read and post them here, so I enjoy doing it.
But is it even possible to show footage at Comic Con since they are still shooting the other half or 1/3 of the film (I would guess) and are probably busy with that? Has this ever been done before? Or how frequently is it being done?

Well, for one the quality of their films (which I don't consider bad at all) is not something that really troubles the producers only their box office performance.
Looking at their track record beginning with The Matrix:
-
The Matrix Trilogy did really great in Theaters & Home Video
-
V for Vendetta did decently
-
Speed Racer bombed
-
Ninja Assassin at the very least made its money back on DVD/BR due to
strong DVD sales (but the Wachowskis acted as producers only anyway)
-
Cloud Atlas, wasn't financed by WB for the most part. Of its $100+ M budget, about $20M came from WB, the rest was from independent investors all over the world plus the Wachowskis own money, because WB didn't believe that the movie would be a success (and they were right). Have WB made their money back? Maybe not, but I would think the fact they didn't believe in the movie in the first place and they didn't spend much on it would make them feel validated in a way.
So as far as Hollywood is concerned their big bomba was Speed Racer only.
So I would imagine that when the Wachowskis approached WB with a concept of a PG-13 (likely) film with a plot vaguely resembling The Matrix (Jupiter is the chosen one), belonging to the scifi/action genre which they haven't really revisited since
Revolutions and with the promise of developing never before seen visual effects that would be as innovative as Bullet Time came to be, the producers would probably think there's a legitimate chance for the film to do great in the box office. Also the early report that leaked the plot premise revealed it's planned as the first film in a trilogy.. so +1 reason for WB to invest in it hoping to replicate The Matrix trilogy's success.
