Is there a way that I can get the first gif in a higher resolution? I'd like to use that as a background on my phone.

Indeed. It was always one of my favorite stages in The King of Fighters '99. The attention to detail is astounding!

No Idea - I thought the gifs were in native resolution - but I´m probably wrong.

Amazing stuff. Attention to detail from SNK is truly great. Capcom's stages are nice, too but there's a clear difference.

Could make an issue of National Geographic with this pixel art. Phenomenal that this type of game has been thrown under the bus.

We had a similar thread last year.

SNK is truly the undisputed king of fighting game backgrounds. I wish we had more gifs of modern fighting game stages even if they don't compare.

Great thread.

Hoping someone posts some good pics from the Marvel VS. games. Those stages had a lot of vertical height to them thanks to the super jumps and whatnot.

Capcom is known for cartoonish stereotypes in place of actual details.

Which is why they do (did?) better at fun colorful stuff like the Gem Fighters Mini-Mix and MvC1 stages, which are love letters to company classics.

For living worlds, I prefer SNK's magic touch.

Yeah, SNK were goddamn KINGS at making incredibly detailed backgrounds and nice animation. You see it in Metal Slug, too.

BTW, this thread reminded me of someone's remake of a Samurai Showdown stage in UE3. It looks PHENOMENAL.

If there were any gifs of ASW stages they'd most definitely be on my computer. :(

http://www.siliconera.com/2012/02/10...kground-phase/

The final approach lead to the backgrounds you see in BlazBlue now and called on a number of approaches brought together. Higher polygon count objects were used around the edges of a scene or anything that was particularly close to the action. Anything that was central or further away used low-poly models and 2D layers were also applied.

With clever use of lighting and shading, these differing styles could be brought together to look as they were just one image. It was an approach that required compromise and although born out of necessity ultimately worked in BlazBlue’s favour giving real depth to the backgrounds and helping to accentuate BlazBlue’s distinctive looks.

This looks like the ideal mortal kombat stage to me for some reason.

Capcom likes stereotypes. Sean's stage in Brazil had monkeys in the streets.
