Considering the rumors about his involvement in The Battle of the Five Armies, it's a possibility that there will be a connection between him and The Necromancer.

Oh damn, no kidding! Maybe? The pupil & color are definitely similar. I also noticed if you don't look directly at the gif and kind of off to the side (hard, I know) you can see a hint of expression since you're seeing the whole shot and not just focusing his giant shiny eye.

Gosh yes, they're amazing credits. Some of the few I don't mind sitting all the way through. Whatever they end up doing, though, I have no doubt it'll be bittersweet and lovely :)

The rumour goes as follows; Smaug dies in the usual manner, but is resurrected by The Necromancer, thus taking part in the Battle.

Seriously? Hoo-boy, that... would be interesting, to say the least. Kind of overpowered, honestly. And it brings up a ton of new issues! I guess we'll see when it comes out :\

Again, it's a rumour from Benedict himself, who may have been given an old script or he may have just misinterpreted what Peter said to him in a conversation, but the rumour has been gaining traction over the past year.

Still miniscule in comparison to Ancalagon.

To my surprise, it was a record of Tolkien himself saying

I always thought this was somewhat balanced out (at least to Tolkien) by the fact that all of his prominent female characters are ridiculously powerful or influential in some way. Galadriel's one of the most powerful/ancient beings in the entire mythos by the time LOTR happens.

The main characters are all on the front lines of a war, and the brief bit of home-life we get in the Hobbit doesn't feature any love plots because frodo is a silly antisocial bachelor. It seems he picked the story he wanted to tell and went with the sex breakdown that he felt made sense.

I think out of all the swords featured in the films thus far, I'd go with Herugrim (Theoden's sword).

Agreed. That's my favorite from the LotR trilogy by far. I squealed a little when PJ said it was his favorite in answer to the question during the Desolation sneak peek :)

Edit: Dunno what my favorite from the Hobbit is yet. I want to like the dwarf weapons, but they're just so utilitarian! Maybe I just need some time for them to grow on me.

I really dig Orcrist (hence why it's the only sword replica from the films that I own...as of yet). However, I would love a replica of Herugrim, Anduril, the shards of Narsil, and the Witch King's sword.

Also, United Cutley's replicas of the High Elven swords are gorgeous:

You know what? I just want all of them.

This is an interesting quote from Benedict:

I went in and auditioned for it and met him in person. And he kept on making me read all of these other characters. I said, "Peter, I'm really flattered, but I would give all of your interest up in any of these other characters and sort of throw the bet all on the one I really want to play, which is the dragon." He's like, "Oh, no, no. It's in the bag, mate. You nailed that audition." I said, "Really?" He said, "He totally got what we want from you and that's very exciting, but you could possibly be three or four other parts." I was like, "What?" That was a secret I kept to myself for a while -- and I don't want to talk about that too much because, again, that's another franchise and I know they want to keep that all for when it kicks off this winter. But I will say this: Not only is he a delightful man, he's as delightful to work for as he is a person.

What other roles could he have played besides Smaug and The Necromancer?

How would everyone react to Benedict's face being associated with Sauron in his fair form?

There was talk of exploring the above character's origins during Guillermo's time as director, via flashbacks.

It's certainly possible in terms of copyright issues and the Estate.

Well I guess it depends how he is implemented of course. It could certainly be interesting and more acceptable than using him in the ROTK as a ''final boss'' but it's not like I want it to happen. Benedict certainly could look the part IMO

Yes, implementation is key. For every good decision Peter and co have made, there have been a few questionable decisions and inclusions.

When Cumberbatch was cast, that was actually the very first thing I thought of. There's a sort of other-worldliness to his appearance that I thought would be perfect if they decided to show Anatar for whatever reason. If Gandalf ends up meeting Thráin in Dol Goldur in DoS then I could certainly see a flashback of a sorts where Thráin talks about being tortured by the Necromancer - that would likely be a good enough point to show Anatar as any. Of course it wouldn't make too much sense given that by that point Sauron wouldn't really need to disguise himself, but it would be a cool little nod.

That would make sense. Another opportunity to explore origins would be via another White Council of sorts. Which may well be possible considering Philippa's comments in one of those Japanese extras, regarding the inclusion of Men in a Council of the Wise.

I was playing it with my nephew the other day. I've introduced the films to him and took him to the cinema to see AUJ. Being familiar with the film versions of the eagles, he didn't expect that at all and almost fell out off the chair when the eagle started talking. :)

That might just be the most adorable Hobbit fanart I've seen thus far.

One of the best things to come out of The Hobbit film project is how it's inspired so many budding artists to visualise Tolkien's mythos adding some variety to the exceptional, but slightly stagnant world of Tolkien artists.
