(it's cg of course)

Youtube version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQ4pUAoK_h4

I have no idea, some sections seems more doable than others. I don't expect a 100% replica but something which has a similar but lesser impact. And far worse water and smoke effects.

We have already seen how game can improves inside the same generation, Killzone Shadow Fall, Infamouse and Knack looks great but Guerrilla said they are only scratching the surface(don't take it literally of course).

Both UE3 and Uncharted demos back in 2005 looks have a far worse impact than Gow 3 and Uncharted 3, can we expect the same with Infiltrator, Agni's and Deep Down?

Maybe we are going to see simila graphics on Pc porting ad the end of this gen at least.

A more pertinent question is whether or not we'll get animations and framerate to a level that it all looks realistic.

Those are all just scenery shots... I could see next gen hitting some pretty realistic looking scenery like the above. As always, characters and their animations will be what ruins the whole effect. Mmm that uncanny valley.

I'm playing some games today that look just as good as scenes from Final Fantasy Spirits Within. This is a huge budgeted movie and we have videogames that can close in on it 12 or so years later. That's kind of amazing to me. I can't wait to see what next gen will be capable of.

I expect slightly better at 1080p (or a similar resolution, you know these devs will be cheeky and downscale a little). Talented devs always find ways to streamline tech and improve engines incredibly efficiently. I expect great things from both MS and Sony.

Sure,except fort he desert scene.

You also won't get anywhere near that kind of image quality, the dof won't be anywhere near as high quality (some shitty quarter res bokeh like in killzone 4 or watch dogs) and the draw distance won't be nearly as good.

Tons of volumetrics everywhere... No, probably not that.

I bet that train station has more polys than the entire demo level of Killzone Shadowfall.

Those building in the city... we'll probably get more boxes that look knid of like buildings, so yeah.

Overall, no. Not even on pc, unless its an exclusive title.

I think next gen will be the final jump in noticeable graphic quality. Especially with the inclusion of Graphene based chips. We will just hit that photo-realism, and with that the graphic race ends.

My two cents.

Huge and beautiful volumetric effects are out of questions imho, it would be an overkill but I think we could have decent approximations or avoid smoke & co like hair have been avoided this gen.

Thats exactly why hell no. You just dont see sacrifices in those game and that technologically they are in the same range as other multiplatform developers.

I don't see anything in that video that can't be done on a PS4 or PS4 equivalent level PC...as a tech demo.

In game gfx though, that's a different thing altogether...

You might could do an off road racing game with a similar look. I'm curious if someone can find a way to do full real time ray tracing or some kind of hybrid without it being too costly to performance. These kind of effects are going to enhance believability of game worlds drastically. I suspect in about 5 years pcs will be able to achieve that and more on high end cards.

Reality check:

NVIDIA GTC Smoke Demo

This volumetric smoke takes 4 Titans to render. Could it be optimized? Sure. But there's way too much physics stuff in the OP demo. Not to mention, the IQ and lighting are far beyond the reach of the current high-end GPUs, let alone next-gen consoles.

I look at what 343i, naughty dog and others were able to do with old as shit hardware and it makes me hopeful for some serious quality later this gen. I think the particle systems and lighting of that video are possible but that IQ is stunning.

Beautiful - but, I think, as much as the tech, cost is also a limiting factor in creating this sort of art and animation. I wonder if a game can be made like that, even in five years, and be profitable if it doesn't sell a few million copies.

I'm not sure we'll ever see a ton of games with photorealistic / almost photorealistic graphics for a few reasons

1. That level of detail makes the game extraordinarily expensive; games are already having difficulty making a profit when they spend that much time and money on them

2. Every little glitch in animation or whatever will completely shatter the effect of having amazing graphics.

3. The big one; amazing graphics do not guarantee a better game and better sales, or even a prettier game (Wind Waker still looks amazing, and when you give it hi res textures and such on a PC emulation it's even more beautiful. It's the art style that counts). I think companies are going to reach a point where making games look good just isn't worth the cost compared to spending more time on making enjoyable experiences, engaging stories, a more interesting art style, and characters we care about.

Maybe we will see some games that look that good someday. I honestly probably won't care though unless they are as fun to play as Killing Floor or Trouble in Terrorist Town (GMod) or have a story or gameplay mechanics that gives me teh feels like To The Moon or Journey

Not impossible to achieve. The asset quality is alread very high, it's just a matter of performance and how much resources is put into detailing.

I hope some open worlds next gen games will have an improved graphics version of the Cry Engine 2 San Francisco (Sony Bravia imitation) demo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpTRbXgU4co

It's mostly art and style, this is why I find it more interesting than Crysis 3.

This is why I don't see the NYC scene in the video so impressive, considering that it looks worse in HD and surely it will be even worse in full HD.

Except for the smoke of course.

It's not the level of detail that's so beyond today's games, but the physics, image quality and lighting -- all of which can be easily improved through brute force via more computing power. Compared to rasterized pre-baked lightmaps, path-traced scenes are far less resource-intensive to produce. It's just a matter of GPUs catching up to the science over the next decade or two. Graphics are pretty much a solved problem.

Why this is not obvious to everyone, I don't know.

Well Halo 4 was a disappointment in graphics for me, it had a good art style.

Uncharted looks good.

The video in my op are 720p video not of the highest quality, so a better comparison should be a compressed 720p video of other games which removes both details and defects.

Next gen games are most likely going do be 1080p games, I expect mode details and more defects but ,overall, but I prefer the latter over the former.

EDIT: the video doesn't look photorealistic at all, it has a strong game-like feel if you watch it at 720p on a decent screen.

I get it. You add some brute force and the cheap tricks they use to fool us and next gen games could be very impressive. I'm not saying those games are technical marvels by todays standards but they certainly are by 2006 standards. I don't think anyone thought gears 3 or halo4 would be possible on the 360. I don't think people thought uncharted 3 or killzone 3 would be possible on the ps3.
