Problem is, we don't know how long the violence took place for. We just have snapshots of a moment. We have no idea how many people were sat around them, how close they were, what they could see or hear. What we can see of the table next to theirs looks unoccupied and the "onlooker" they interviewed was almost certainly the paparazzo who will milk every single moment and make it as salacious as possible because of it's monetary worth. So, people in the restaurant just sat there quietly while this guy berated and choked her. That is hard to believe.
Perhaps my stance comes from me dealing with quite a bit of this very situation in life. I've only dealt with bullying myself when I was younger(along with being on the receiving end of alcoholism, but that is another story), but I've had numerous encounters with people being abused. Both children and well as women. I've fought aside people(in both senses), taken people in, etc. Excluding the children of course, nearly every time something happened, it was because she decided to give another chance until so much had been invested that it's hard to leave. That isn't every case though.Originally Posted by Metroid Killer

My apologies.

This is years ago, but when I was at University and living in Nottingham (UK) there was one time where I came across some guy doing pretty much the same kind of thing.Originally Posted by LuchaShaq

Since it was turning out time for the clubs there were loads of people in the vicinity. One guy decided to step in and told him to leave her alone.
To my astonishment both the abusive dickhead and the girlfriend he was slapping around started beating him up. All the while spouting vitriol up to and including "Fuck you, we love each other!"
I probably would still try to stop this kinda thing if I saw it happening, but I certainly wouldn't expect either party to appreciate it.

In other news, the ignorance in this thread is saddening.
Whatever. Id readily believe people's lives are complicated enough for this to make sense for them. You know it doesn't HAVE to be some psychological syndrome. Maybe this was in fact an isolated incident and she genuinely loves/understands him. I don't know. I'm not blaming her or would never imply that she deserves it.Originally Posted by Metroid Killer

The kind who don't want to risk their own safety? Anyone who is willing to beat their spouse in public is a lunatic. I had a friend who tried to stick up for a girl getting shoved into a wall outside of a nightclub. When he grabbed the boyfriend and told him to knock it off, she hit my friend in the head with a huge sign on the sidewalk. Cut his head open. We reported it to RCMP later but both of those people took off. They said next time, don't personally intervene unless you have reason to believe her life was in danger and to flag down security at the club or call the cops instead. What kind of a place is this where someone can attack a woman in broad daylight, in public and not get immediately have the snot beaten out of him? I've seen this happen only once in my life. Some asshole in a car started yelling at a woman really loud and the started slapping her while they were parked. You know what happened? Men from the neighborhood gathered, pulled him out of the car, called the police and then kept him occupied until they got there. By beating him up. What kind of pussies can watch this go down and not intervene?
Want to do something, use your phone, call the cops, call the store manager. Why risk your own safety? Also, you risk getting arrested for assault as well. When push comes to shove, is she going to side with her husband or the random stranger who beat the crap out of him?
Yeah, this is more common than some people think. I know about couple of rather similar cases, guys with nothing but good intentions that ended with a beat down trying to mediate or simply restraining the attacker. Plus, there's no way to know what the attacker may be up to.Originally Posted by KingofGourds

As sad as it is, the best thing you can do in these situations is to call the police and keep an eye out. Don't ever intervene unless someone is in clear and imminent danger.
Edit: And then there's the legal stuff as pointed above. In one of the cases I mentioned the victim vouched for her aggressor. Just stay the fuck away.
You're totally right. Getting knifed in the stomach, getting your ass kicked, possibly getting arrested for assault, getting injured is much better than dialing 911 and saying there is a case of domestic assault going on. This isn't some macho bullshit stuff or trying to be a good guy. Having the ability to go home is worth a lot. You never know these days. Like I wrote in my earlier example, what if the guy knifed my friend? What did he accomplish? What would you have accomplished here?Fuck no I'm not staying away. I'd rather risk getting beaten up than having to live with turning around and washing my hands. Seriously, I've been beaten up, I've had a knife pulled on me, I've been attacked with a broken chair leg, it's not such a big deal. Having to go home knowing I didn't intervene is a much worse outcome.
Anyone who says getting beaten up or attacked with a wooden chair is not a big deal is kidding themselves. Believe me, I've been in worse myself. There's no harm in getting up, getting the manager or calling the cops. Doesn't make you a wimp, or less of a man. Bad things can happen.
And yes, the other guy can have you arrested for assault, especially if his wife takes his side, which she probably would have.

And the fact that he's uber rich may make it harder for her leave, even though she makes her own money. She may be used the billionaire lifestyle, plus they have kids, etc. It's not as easy as some folk would paint it to be.
Can't believe there are photos of this.

and you are the one true hero that would valiantly jump in and tell him to stop, right?

If I recall correctly LuchaShaq is a huge dude who has worked as a bouncer. (Please correct me if I've got you confused with someone else, Lucha.)and you are the one true hero that would valiantly jump in and tell him to stop, right?

It's easy for him to say he'd intervene, and there's little reason to think he wouldn't.
I question his notion that anyone of any size should be equally brave.
You don't have to be a "hero" to intervene. I called the cops when my neighbor was being abused by her husband/bf once.and you are the one true hero that would valiantly jump in and tell him to stop, right?

Regardless, hope things work out for her :\

well, yeah, no excuse to not call the cops, everyone has phones these days. I'm talking about physically intervening.
but if LuchaShaq is a huge bouncer, his perspective on these situations is probably different than other people's, so nevermind my comments then. Most people aren't huge bouncers though and they also think about things like "this uber-rich dude could ruin my life in any number of ways if he decides to hate me enough after"
Well, there is the possibility that there is a fetish role-play thing going on, so who knows?yeah, you should
Some women like being choked. Some women like being shamed. Sometimes its more intense if these things happen in public.

Do we have any shots of these two before and after the incident? If we do, were they chosen selectively to have a story?

You dont know how some women are. You do something and she ends up telling you to fuck off or attacks you herself. Or you attack him, she stays with him, then he beats her twice as hard when they get home cause he blames her for getting attacked by some stranger.

That reminds me that a friend of mine in Bournemouth once saw a guy having a huge argument with his girlfriend, ending with him punching her in the stomach and storming off. My friend went over to help her out and she said she just wanted to go home. So my buddy tries to help this winded woman to the bus stop, she stops, doubled over in pain. My friend turns to her to see if she's OK and she just kicked him straight in the nuts. At that point, the boyfriend who was hiding down an alleyway with his friends all jump him with the girl joining in for good measure, give him the beating of a lifetime and stealing his wallet. Three broken ribs, two black eyes, sore bollocks and a concussion for his troubles.Originally Posted by KingofGourds

So, yeah, be careful if you're going to go white knighting drunken maidens on a night out.

Yep. Battered woman syndrome is some fucked up thing. I've intervened before for a woman I knew, not physically, but telling them to get the fuck out of the relationship, but then come the rationalizing. That reminds me that a friend of mine in Bournemouth once saw a guy having a huge argument with his girlfriend, ending with him punching her in the stomach and storming off.
