Nigella Lawson has left her marital home with a suitcase just hours after shocking pictures emerged of the TV chef apparently being choked by her husband millionaire Charles Saatchi during a row in a restaurant.

The 53-year-old mother of two looked anxious as she dashed into a waiting taxi with her teenager son.

More likely, some significant psychosocial phenomena is at work that you are also influenced by, as you are not a special snowflake (nor am I).

The phenomena you're speaking of has been demonstrated and discussed for decades though. People in large groups tend to think that someone else will step up and that their intervention is not necessary. The most famous case of this is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Kitty_Genovese, something I'm sure you're familiar with.

It doesn't mean that the people involved are cowards or weak, it does however mean that humans have to understand their own social instincts and how best to govern them. I was in Toronto during the g8/g20 riots, right at the epicentre of the rioting and people running from police. Some cunt screamed "the rioters are coming back" And people immediately began running for their lives. I was there with my girlfriend so I was more focused on protecting her from the stampeding mob, but one guy in the middle of the crowd yelled "stop running" which I echoed as loud as I could and immediately the crowd became more placid. It was utter proof of people simply watching out for their own interests in the most short sighted manner possible, similar to the situation with nigella.

Police are inquiring into reports that the millionaire art collector Charles Saatchi gripped his wife, Nigella Lawson, by the throat several times during an argument outside a London restaurant.

Photographs of the incident at Scott's restaurant in Mayfair – where Saatchi and Lawson regularly dine on the terrace so that Saatchi can smoke – appeared in the Sunday People, part of the Mirror group.

The photographs were taken through the screen of olive trees and box shrubs that partly screen the terrace, but the row could reportedly be seen and heard by other customers and passersby.

An onlooker said Saatchi had gripped Lawson first with his left hand, then both, and that by the end of the meal, despite kissing him on the cheek at one point, she left the restaurant in tears. "It was utterly shocking to watch," the source said.

The story, and the ethics of its publication, were hotly debated on Twitter, with many shocked that people looked on and took photographs without making any attempt to intervene or call the police. One tweet suggested that whoever sold the photographs should donate the fee to domestic abuse charity Refuge.

The author and former MP Louise Mensch tweeted: "Every single person saying 'it's Nigella's business' and 'don't interfere in their marriage' is a man."

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said police are making inquiries, but have not launched a formal investigation.

"We are aware of the reports, and we are making inquiries to establish the facts – but that does not constitute an investigation. No allegation has been made, and we have not spoken to any of the principles."

The incident apparently happened a week ago, and there has been no response to the publication of the story from either Lawson or Saatchi, who married 10 years ago, after the death of her first husband, the journalist John Diamond.

I love Nigella Lawson so the last thing I want to see is something bad happening to her. Looking at the pictures of the incident was awful but knowing that she left her house makes me hopeful that she'll leave that idiot and move into a better situation.

Not only is he willing to do it in public, but also in a restaurant where she's surrounded by sharp utensils she could easily use to defend herself with. I can't imagine being attacked like that and not even trying to fight back. Must be pretty used to being abused.

Yeah, they were a gang that operated in the area for a while. Until they got caught. It was quite the master plan apart from the bit where they'd target the same bar and alleyway every week.

She may be leaving because of the scandal rather than the abuse - I'm very sure it wasn't the first time he has abused her. Still - leaving is leaving, I hope it sticks.

Those public photos may have been the best thing that happened to her and she may be able to use them to take the bastard for as much as she can.

Hopefully she can stay away and perhaps her story can help others in a similar situation.

Good on her for leaving him but I hope she doesn't go back to him which unfortunately happens in a lot of abusive relationships.

I can't believe someone could harm her Nigella though - she has such a warm fun loving personality.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard, Saatchi said: "About a week ago, we were sitting outside a restaurant having an intense debate about the children, and I held Nigella?s neck repeatedly while attempting to emphasise my point.

"There was no grip, it was a playful tiff.

"The pictures are horrific but give a far more drastic and violent impression of what took place. Nigella?s tears were because we both hate arguing, not because she had been hurt.

"We had made up by the time we were home. The paparazzi were congregated outside our house after the story broke yesterday morning, so I told Nigella to take the kids off till the dust settled."

Lawson's spokesperson has been quoted as saying: "I can clarify that she has left the family home with her children."

Scotland Yard said that officers from the Community Safety Unit are "carrying out preliminary inquiries" after the photographs appeared in the Sunday People newspaper.

Possibly, but I've actually been in almost identical situations and did something either verbally or physically that ended it. I believe I would do the same given a similar situation again. I'm not really seeing that as special, just the person I am. I know very few people that wouldn't do something when confronted with that.

Weak, no account is hyperbole to some degree, but is it really so hard to say, hey, stop hurting that person? I can see mass indecision, because I've seen it before, but this is a man physically abusing a woman in a restaurant. I'm sorry if you see that as just big upping myself, because that isn't my intent.

Good point, and without knowing more specifics it can be hard to say. The op sounds pretty bad though, but it's all context sometimes.
