Well for whatever reason im sure they'll rectify it eventually, healthy competition is good:

Microsoft's head of product development, Albert Penello, has said that the console's delay in some European territories is due to the complexities of localising its new voice-control features, and pointed to its use of near-final retail kits at Gamescom as proof that there are no supply problems.

Following a demo of the console's new interface, which uses voice controls for features like game capture, he confirmed that the extra localisation work this has required is the key reason behind the console's delayed launch in eight territories.

"I think people are using the way [voice] works on Xbox 360, which was an accessory we built five years after release, as how it's going to work here," he told us. "But it's so much more elegant and so much more integrated, and in many ways it's a lot faster and more convenient. Whereas on Xbox 360 it's a lesser version of doing the thing you're used to doing on your controller.

"This is the part of the internet that's frustrating, because everybody wants to assume there's a [units volume] issue. And yet I'm showing real hardware here at Gamescom - a real, final, retail kit. Which I have yet to see my friends show me.

"People assume there's a volume issue which in fact there isn't. You're actually seeing pre-orders pop back up now because we're able allocate the countries' volumes back in. It's there, the problem is localisation. And once people see the system and how integral it is, it's not just text integration."

"But at the same time we said, this is a region-free console," he added. "In regions like Switzerland where people speak German and French, they can get a German or French console. It'll work fine. They can log in to their marketplace, use their language, we don't geo-fence Live or any of the content any more. We don't have official language support - but the console still works."

Then why not simply release in Switzerland if they speak the 'Tier 1' languages?

That's what I thought first as well but if you ignore the editors note he's actually just referring to any issues regarding the box and stating the final kit as proof that they have indeed a finished product.

I think it's most likely that they're just focusing their initial units on the markets they are strongest in to get a good footing, than it is for them to be having manufacturing problems.

It seems like the logical business decision to make, but that decision will impact the countries they decided to delay the launch in quite negatively I believe.

I doubt it's languages or manufacturing, it think it's simply business, they're concentrating on the markets that will move most units, that's why they've changed strategy now after seeing the initial pre-order numbers.

Well I'm sure that'll do to shut these silly supply issues rumours down!

Also, I thought Live won't be up in countries where the console hasn't launched yet? What's up with that?

So if the xbox one gets outsold at launch "supply constraints" won't be a valid explanation - good to know MS...

Sounds like an excuse pulled from an ad man's rectum. If MS was so poorly prepared for the launch window this holiday season, why didn't they explain this shit earlier?

The closer we get to November the more I sense that MS is trying to gauge the reactions to the new hardware and price point, probably adjusting things as they move along down the way. I would not be terribly surprised if the tier two countries would get delayed even further.

At the same time I am still completely in the dark whether my Xbox One pre-order from UK to mainland Europe (tier 9, lol) will work like a 360 or whether I am just getting a gigantic paperweight.

No. But to be fair it usually doesn't happen months before launch. PS4 was kind of an exception, PS3 for instance passed it in mid-september 2006.

I couldnt care less about a prototype unit... All I'm interested in are facts. Fact is, there is no release date neither in the US nor EU, so what else is the reason then if not manufacturing problems?
PS: Its gamescom btw :P

It should work but if I were you I would avoid purchasing anything on their online store until the localised one opens, even though the original quote of this post states that you have nothing to worry about.

That's true. At GamesCom every PS4 demo station was showing fake units, while a cabinet under them contained the real devices. I presume PS4 devkits. Every Xbox One shown, instead, was the real device attached to monitor and controller.

Microsoft showed us the console earlier than Sony. Hence, they produced more units. I am talking real science here.

The problem with "issues" is that an issue becomes only an issue if manufacturing performs worse than expected. However, we don't have any statements about prior expectations. We only know that the Xbox launches in less countries, and that pretty much confirms that things could have been better.

Don't we have reports stating that first party was using real PS4s while third party were using devkits and PCs?

I don't know. I've personally checked first party demo stations, like the Knack ones, and the PS4s shown were empty plastic shells with a glowing led and the controller cable passing through the case going to an underlying, locked case. They even put a white cover in front on the rear connectors side to hide that there were no power/hdmi cables connected.

Apart from the odd case of Switzerland, localization problems are quite probable since the task is non-trivial. What I don't get is why localization problems should prevent a console launch. A English/German/French/Spanish-only console is still better than no console during the holidays. Even I will run my console in English although it's not my native language.
