source siliconeraGust have been busy with New Atelier Rorona, but However, fans of Ar Tonelico and Ciel no Surge will also have something to look forward to, as this week’s issue of Dengeki PlayStation reveals that their upcoming title, Ar no Surge, will be some sort of mix between the two games.
According to the magazine report, the game will be a RPG directed by Akira Tsuchiya, known for directing the three Ar Tonelico games, along with Ar Tonelico and Phantasy Star Universe illustrator “ntny” as the character designer
The world of Ar no Surge will revolve around magic and the power of thoughts. Flight Unit, the studio that has worked on several of Gust’s graphics and animation will create high quality models for the game. Their work will emphasize lighting and shading of the game’s sci-fi fantasy setting, with extra detail on metallic textures.
While the name Ar no Surge is indeed a combination of the two franchises, Ar Tonelico and Ciel no Surge, the relation between the games have not been revealed. However, the magazine reports that the language spoken in the world will be the same as the one from Ciel no Surge and the story will take place at a different time in the same world.
The protagonist is a young man named Delta Lantanoil, who appeared after Felion’s partition wall was opened. He has been protecting the town from Sharl, as part of the elite forces called “PLASM”. After a certain incident, he was discharged from the group, and is currently running a diner. His partner Acies is some sort of humanoid weapon.
The planet La Ciela is where the Genomes lived. The Sharl use song magic to kidnap the humans who have no means of communication. Meanwhile, after the partition wall opened, someone who lost the ability to perform ancient song magic appears. There’s also a certain township that has ancients who’ve awakened from cold-sleeps living together with the modern people. There’s a heaven ruler princess who governs Felion, a town where humans reside.
Ar no Surge will be an orthodox RPG that is split between three parts of towns, field and battle. However, the battle system will be a something of a hybrid system that uses turn-based command battles. The heroine character will use song magic from the back, while the protagonist protects her while fighting in the frontline. There will be some sort of action element to the battles, including a “Defend” system, according to Dengeki PlayStation.
You’ll be switching between Delta and Acies as you progress through the scenario and explore dungeons. There will also be a special feature that can be accessed through internet connectivity.
Finally, there’s a system that involves a person’s heart, called the “Genometric System”. This system will be used to power up the characters. Additionally, there will also be a synthesis system, that Gust games have been known for having.
Ar no Surge is slated for release on January 30, 2014, for PlayStation 3.

Consider me hyped. Day -1 if it's localised.
However with what I am seeing in Atelier, I have confidence that this one will be good.
I've only played several hours of the first Ar Tonelico
I think I'm gona plug in Quga, screw my backlogs
The battle system sounds acceptable - kind of like Super Mario RPG:

Surge Concerto: Ciel Nosurge (シェルノサージュ〜失われた星へ捧ぐ詩〜?) is a life simulation video game for the PlayStation Vita developed by Gust. The player is introduced to Ionasol (shortened to "Ion" in the game), a girl with amnesia; the player's objective is to help Ion regather her memories by entering her mind; which is shown as a broken world which the player can repair (in order to recover Ion's memories).Although not a continuation of the Ar tonelico series, it takes place in the same universe with many of the same elements and expands on the series mythos. The game is notably the first game to be developed by Gust after their merger with Tecmo Koei.
It was released on April 26, 2012 in Japan. As of March 2013, there are no plans for a release outside of Japan [...]
Ion is a candidate for the next emperor in her world but lives on her own; the player can build a romantic relationship with Ion (shown by a separate "love meter"[2]) by interacting with her. Ion may make adjustments to her lifestyle timing, which will eventually match the player's the longer the game has been played.[2]
The world of Ciel Nosurge was designed with an intent to give Japanese players a sense of nostalgia; for example with buildings from the Showa era.[2] Ion herself lives in a world called ra-ciel-a. ra-ciel-a is nearing destruction due to the expansion of its sun, Bezel; and due to this, most of its population built floating cities to protect themselves; while the poor, such as Ion, still live on the ground.[5]
Another gameplay element of Ciel Nosurge is the ability to create fairies known as Sharl (シャール?) from scanning barcodes. Different barcodes create a different type of Sharl, which are needed to repair Ion's mind.[6] The game also has a system where players can type short messages for other players.[6] The game has been referred to as a social game due to its heavy focus on socializing with other players and the requirement to be connected to PlayStation Network to play. At the time of its release, many of the game's online servers were not working properly, but that problem has since been fixed by Gust through a series of patches.
The game was released as a series of episodes, episode one being the original cart. As of March 2013, five episodes have been released. Episodes two through five were released as DLC for a few hundred yen each on PlayStation Network. Each episode is estimated to take around seven hours to complete. Other than episodes and patches, other minor add-ons have been released on PSN, such as costumes.
Well, it could be great or not so great but I think from art point of view it can't disappoint.
Very excited for this, been wanting a new Ar Tonelico for a loooong time. AT3 is one of my favourite games this gen
Maybe one day there will be a new Ar Tonelico :(
You'll have more of my love if you localize this T-K!
I'm okay with this.
Especially since T-K got to their senses WRT dual-audio localization.
They released AT3 in January 2010 after releasing Rorona mid-2009. Doesn't seem like much has changed (as in, Gust is still one of the most consistently productive Japanese developers, particularly on consoles).Damn, TK is working Gust to the bone. Either that or they've done some serious expanding over the past year.
I suppose, but just this year they've released a Ciel no Surge expansion, a Meruru port, Escha & Logy, and will soon be dropping a full scale Rorona remake, Chronos Materia, and now this. That's some insane productivity given how small a studio they are. They released AT3 in January 2010 after releasing Rorona mid-2009. HYPE!!!
I know there is little chance of this not coming, but I won't resist another Ciel No Surge :( (different kind of monster, but I wanted it anyway, I still listen the intro song from time to time :( )
Excellent news.
TK pls.
(Sadly the only thing I got out of Ciel no Surge :/ -- still worth it!)
I hope they tone down the controversial bits this time just so the game reaches a wider audience. AT3 was pretty solidly in "uncomfortable to buy" territory for me.Originally Posted by Quixzlizx
I hope they come up with some music as amazing as the Hymmnos tracks.
It's some of the most beautiful music to be found in current games and the story and systems are interesting. (By the way, are there other games with music in that style?)
Maybe what looked like TK buying Gust was really Gust eating TK from the inside out.Originally Posted by Christhor
I will never understand how Gust is able to make so many long, quality games with such a small team. There's this, the Rorona remake and there will probably be another entry in the Dusk series next year too. How many hours a day to the employees work?
Male reyvateils plz, kthx.
