Tucked away inside of the densely-packed Tokyo Game Show Indie Game Area was Project EF-12, which at first glance appeared to be a prototype 3D fighter along the lines of SoulCalibur or Tekken. After being introduced to designer/Quad Arrow CEO Masahiro Onoguchi, however, I learned that the game is in fact a free, totally customizable 3D fighting game engine.

Through modifying what essentially amounts to a collection of spreadsheets, users can change virtually everything about Project EF-12, from its characters, to their abilities and stages, all the way down to the appearance of the UI. The version I played had a selection of characters that had been modified into familiar archetypes: Virtua Fighter-esque, Tekken-like – there was even a character that played with 2D-style controls, despite this being a 3D engine.

Players can also insert new character models they've built from scratch, assuming the models were constructed in either Soft Image or Maya. Trading/sharing new characters is as simple as downloading a zip and extracting the spreadsheet and models into the correct folder.

Project EF-12 is currently available with a mountain of Japanese-language tutorial material through Playism's Japanese website, with an English release expected on Playism's English site before the end of the year. In related news, expect Style Guide: Journalism Hyper Fighting from Joystiq Publishing almost immediately afterwards.

Could you have a character locked into a 2D plane face a fully 3D character? Hilarity would ensue.

Onoguchi understands English. I chat with him in English all the time.

We're super pumped about EF-12. Can't wait to put out the English veraion.

Omega Ben Affleck incoming.

Looking forward to the hilarity that will undoubtedly issue forth from this.

Seriously, though, that screenshot looks quite nice. We'll need vids of the engine in action, though Oops, we have vids already, but my point still stands - 60fps or no sale.

This sounds incredibly fun to play around with, and I'm not even a huge fan of fighting games! Love the idea of character data being stored in an easy to use format.

Is there any convenient way of packing up and loading whole games? Characters, global rules and systems, etc.

I think it would make fighting game tournaments more interesting if every competitor had their own custom-made character(s). Something like this could make it possible.

Could be big for doujin games if there's an easy way to package things into a single game download. Anyone know if it's possible to import custom animations rather than tweaking pre-made ones in-engine?

Go for it! We should have the English version out very soon for those interested in learning how to create content.

Yep. You can rig your own animations. Characters are made in external programs after all.

Okay, first impressions:

The game itself will play if a button on a controller is pressed on the start screen. Should Return be pressed, the title enters dev mode.

So far it runs at a solid 60fps.

Each character has a name and a game archetype. There's a TK (Tekken) character, some VF characters, and so on.

The menus are all in English.

You can do neat stuff like have the title running at 720p but internally running at 1440p.

Button mapping is a config file with hex values for the buttons. Pretty easy to fix your buttons - by default they're the Hori layout.

The "SF" characters still have side steps.

Ah.

Fingers crossed for some documentation soon.

EDIT: Okay, first major roadblock: This requires Excel - you can't use OpenOffice. :| If you don't have access you'll have to edit the .csv file yourself in a utility like Notepad++ or Sublime Text 2.

I can't wait till people start making their custom fighting games. I hope this gets placed on Steam with Steam Workshop. The developer mentioned that they were in talks with Steam.

On the other hand, if they already have a 3D model of Heart already to go, it makes it all the more apparent that they may be going in that direction for AH4.

Okay, so here is my overall impressions of EF-12 so far:

THE GOOD

+ Easy to modify the numbers, from frame data through to damage and float heights.
+ No severe engine glitches or weirdness. Everything works like a generic 3D fighting game.
+ Very easy to clone and modify a character, and it looks to be easy to make palette swaps with different move properties etc.

THE BAD

- Japanese documentation.
- Maya, Softimage, Blender only for the GFX.
- Excel is required if you don't want to wade into the raw data.
- Stages are very rudimentary. No way of setting a limit on where characters can walk other than ring-out lines (no corners, walls.)
- As far as I can see, despite having SF-style movesets on two characters, most fundamental aspects of a 2D fighter are missing. Collision is governed by hit-spheres attached to bones rather than hitboxes. I can't see any way of setting up a move as being special cancellable, despite specials existing in the engine. The engine really only really supports basic 3D fighters.

Basically, if you're looking to make a Tekken 3 character, this is a great engine. But I was hoping for an engine that would work in a 2D plane and this doesn't appear to be it.

Yes, if someone animates them (or they could just leave them as is).

In short, what Teknopathetic said.

In long: Looking at the SSBB Luigi model as an example - he's already modeled, textured and UV'd. What he'd need is rigging, animating, then compiling for the engine. After that, all someone would need to do would be to build a character from that.

The whole rigging and animating thing is difficult.

The exciting thing is that this means that all you really need to be able to do is animate and you can make loads of fighting game characters for this engine as there isn't any complex scripting.

It's just a shame that learning to animate a human well takes a long time. :P And, of course, you're limited to the capabilities of the engine, so you only really can make Tekken characters. :\

UPDATE ON TINKERING:

I managed to get the preview shader for Maya working. Characters textures look like they support diffuse, normal and spec, plus a "dent" map which appears to, well, dent the model. There's also env for people who want to make chrome mecha.

My first project in the engine is probably going to be to port that Luigi model into it, but that will take me a TONNE of time due to not really being all that hot on character animation.
