...because after funding the fully playable demo themselves for a full year, without successful crowd-funding there is no money to make the game, essentially.

From a recent post on the Precursor forums. :(

It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to put the Shadow of the Eternals project on hold. We are very happy with what we have accomplished both as a group and with the community. The community has blown us away and was the one thing that kept us going through it all - we cannot thank you enough.

Many of us will be taking a break. For those who are not aware, we all worked on this project as a labor of love and self financed 100% of everything for a over a year to try to make Shadow of the Eternals a reality. Although we did not succeed on doing this, we succeeded in making many friends and starting something that we hope provided value for those involved. We have no regrets.

Denis, Phil and Aaron have decided to continue to run the forums for those who wish to stay hang out and talk. Denis, Phil and Aaron will also be taking a break but will be around posting and talking with everyone when they can. Others from Precursor will also be popping in from time to time.

Is the project dead? No, but we feel it needs a rest too. We have all agreed as a group that when and if the time is right we will get together and start it up again.

Keep your head high everyone and remember what we have accomplished together.

- The Precursor Games Team

Also:

Thanks, Obama.

And much of NeoGAF: Let the Schadenfreude flow through you, all those who were hoping for this outcome, whatever your reasons.

For those like me who supported and/or wanted the game, like me, welp... sorry folks it's a bummer. Lots of shit in this industry isn't turning out the way I would have it. If wishes were horses I'd have a whole stable full. Regardless, I'll spend another one:

Here's hoping there's a gainful and happy future for the people at Precursor. Peace.

Sorry for the devs. Sorry for the fans. But honestly, I never saw anything good in their demo. Nothing interesting from the presentation and the characters lack charm. The girls looked ridiculous too... Like amateur design. I guess I missed something because it never appealed me at all but maybe I'm not an isolated case, therefore explaining why it failed all crowdfounding

Another rule of Greenlight that has to change. I'm sure there is some game on Greenlight right now that is finished and ready to go but couldn't get through the process because this piece of vaporware got greenlit first.

Too bad. Denis makes good games. Too Human was good.

The game wasn't appealing to me and probably many others. I don't see why I have to be objective, it just looks like a game I wouldn't ever buy except maybe on humble bundle heheh

You can't keep a good game down. I believe that we will eventually see an Eternal Darkness successor, either in this form or another.

Sounds like Precursor isn't breaking up so after a small break they should regroup and think about a project that they can afford to get started. Maybe a top down act/rpg spiritual successor to Legacy of Kain is in order. Kicksart it with less money for the end goal and I bet it would get funded. They have great ideas and a good team they just need to start smaller and if going the Kick Starter route, they need to ask for a lot less. Once the smaller game gets released and they prove themselves maybe they can go back to bigger projects like Shadows.

In related news, a new game in the Legacy of Kain franchise isn't what we were expecting. Sad news for both fanbases.

That really sucks. There are people who wanted this game and cared about it and now they get nothing. I'm not a huge Eternal Darkness fan but I know people who are and they were mature/rational/excited enough to look past the drama surrounding the developers/development and their history. The naysayers and haters probably weren't numerous enough to be the reason this failed obviously, so it seems like there was a lack of interest from the general gaming community and there weren't enough Eternal Darkness fans to make this a reality.

Hopefully Precursor finds something else because to be honest, these guys sound really passionate about making video games. This shelving isn't beneficial for anyone.

Yeah he's never going to shake that I'm afraid whether he truly is innocent or not. The industry is just too 'small' of a community. People have definitely lost more for a lot less than something as huge as that. (.....such an epic statement, lol)

I just had issues with trusting Dyack after all the Silicon Knights craziness. If the game ever came out, I was willing to give it a shot. But I just couldn't give it any money, and I actively discouraged others from doing so until Precursor proved themselves.

It stick yeah, but he's innocent until proven guilty. Even more that we know nothing of the proof, so he might have picked up the wrong torrent and bam CP. Download, storage and distribution right there. We will see.

Thank God. No offense to anyone that was looking forward to it, but Dyack has had too many second chances.

Though, I should clarify I feel terrible about anyone else losing work over this. Just that Denis shouldn't be allowed to call the shots on any project. He's bad at it.

People were absolutely fair and objective. Just because you liked Eternal Darkness a lot and wanted a spiritual successor doesn't mean that those of us who don't trust Dyack or think that he's made anything worth playing in ages aren't being fair and objective. Quite the contrary, actually. All evidence pointed to a new Dyack endeavor being a disaster at best... what it actually sounded like was a cash grab.

This is sad. I didn't want to give money beforehand, because I generally don't believe in paying for something I can't try first, but I hoped they could have secured some other funding and given it a shot.

No, the Dyack hate wave definitely played a big role in the outcome. The videos and material released were among the best for Kickstarter projects. This would have been funded with reliable project managers.

Dangerously high sodium levels coming from imbarkus, as always.

Feel bad for the people at Precursor, as they seemed passionate about it, but the people have spoken and the people don't want a sequel to Eternal Darkness all that badly. That's what this really boils down to.
