Thanks to Platy for posting this.

PS4's BRL price is R$ 858.00.
That's $394.85 in USD. (cheaper than NA)

Sony Brazil's profit margin on that is R$ 257.00 (118.27 USD)
They remove that profit margin as a "discount" to keep costs down.

But the tax adds on R$ 2,524.00 ($1161.53 USD) On top of the base price and retailer markup.

Holy fucking shit. This is nuts.

I want to see now the Xbone taxes... Sony is lying about that... bullshit.

The taxes are the same for both.

Xbone: 2200
PS4: 4000

MS is paying R$2000 to me buy their console?

I wonder how much Microsoft is losing per console to sell the X1 LESS than the PS4 there.

Either that or the retailer markup isn't nearly as high. Probably a combination of both.

Would seem like it. Either that or they're avoiding taxes by manufacturing whole or parts of their console in Brazil. How can you say they lied about taxes when you have the tax breakdown right before you.

I know what you mean. Chicago's city taxes put it around 10% for all sales, but that seems so inconsequential as to be meaningless when you compare it to something like this. That's so unbelievably unfair for people in Brazil.

Edit: Before anyone says anything, I get that this is a luxury item, and I don't know what these kinds of taxes get spent on. Nevertheless, a luxury tax of that size is insane.

Two reasons.

1 is to foster purchase of internally made goods to help their economy.

As the years went on, both the PS3 and 360 are made internally now in Brazil
http://www.destructoid.com/sony-to-m...l-253306.phtml
http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/40-br...y-opens/085562

2 is that Brazil has a love/hate relationship with gambling

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-16634941

And because they're dumb, video games are classified as gambling machines, so they're heavily taxed beyond logic.

Because two options... you choose what you believe.

1) MS is evading taxes * it is a crime... illegal *

2) Sony is lying putting more taxes than need in that chart like IPI two times.

Back home, Costa Rica, as a rule of thumb you could double the price of the console on the US and get the cost in the stores. If you import it through a courier service you could get it for roughly 25-30% more.

If i wanted a PS4 back home, I would budget roughly 550 for the console and 70 for every game, which is not too bad.

Couldn't the XBO have been classified as not a console since that would give it a lower tax rate. Alternatively they have it shipping mostly complete and are assembling it somewhat in Brazil. Not full production but partial assembly that would reduce the tax burden.

Or there is some giant conspiracy theory and they are getting extra taxes because they pissed off the wrong Brazilian official.

I think that might be their normal mark up, idk, because they already said they are losing about 60 dollars per unit in NA and hope PS+ and a game will put them over that break even point.

not really. the reason is that the brazilian government is corrupt and it'd take a mass riot to change the current political system (which would then allow for tax reforms, for one), but that is never going to happen. and even if things did change, there's no guarantee whatever replaces the current system would be any better
