It looks phenomenal.

All Mae wants to do is run around with her friends, break stuff and hang on to a life of aggressive aimlessness. She dropped out of college and returned home to her crumbling old mining town to do just that, but she's finding that nothing is the same anymore. The old town seems different. Her old friends have grown in their own directions. Mae herself is undergoing some sudden and unexplained changes, giving her mysterious abilities that grant her access to a side of town she never knew existed. The world is changing, things are ending, and the future is uncertain. Up behind the park at the edge of town, back in the trees by the old mine- there's something in the woods. And it could mean no future at all.

Night In The Woods is a 2D story-focused adventure/exploration game with many extracurricular activities to enjoy, characters to meet, and secrets to discover. Run, jump and use astral projection to explore the many sides of town of Possum Springs and the surrounding environs. Waste time around town with your crew of loser friends. Gain abilities that grant passage to new areas. Discover the secrets of a large cast of characters and the town itself. Experience a big crazy world and the remarkable events unfolding there. Play bass. Break stuff.

Alec Holowka programmed Aquaria, among other things.
Scott Benson is a respected animator.

Very attractive game. Hope it succeeds.

edit: The soundtrack seems to have high potential as well. I like what I've seen so far. Only possible because of indie growth.

IMO Aquaria is still the best metroidvania and exploration game I've ever played.

This could be promising.

I really like what they're trying to capture, at least from the description and video. Seems to try to replicate the feeling many people have when they grow up and everybody changes and when they return home, businesses are dead, friends have left or are different, everything you thought you knew has changed. It's very evocative. When do you realize you have to forge your own path? Do you stay behind and get trapped?

Bea and Mae were best friends until 7th grade, when suddenly they weren’t. She worked hard throughout school, was valedictorian of her graduating class, and aced her college applications. But when her mother died, her father didn’t take it well. Bea stayed in Possum Springs to help him recover, and to take her mother’s place at the family business.

This description, for example, is a typical story. Bae had dreams. But, life interrupted and it changed her forever. She had to give them up, and in a way once your dreams die, a spark goes out of you.

The idea of a dying town where in this instance coal mining has left forever is very evocative of the steel and coal countries of backwater Pennsylvania. So many dead or dying towns off the back of fading coal mines and steel factories. It's very depressing, and also in its own way causing melancholy for the times lost. If you are a certain type of person, it becomes difficult to move on. You want to hold onto something that really never existed at all.

Anyway, I really love this concept so I will get this.

I guess he's only making music on those other games, as he sometimes does, while he's the programmer on this.

Stretchgoals 1 to 3 'smashed to bits (3rd update)' which means they hired Charles Huettner to do some animating and Adam Saltsman (not gonna link this one, I don't want to be insulting) to make a game-within-the-game, if I understand correctly.

And then, 4th update: where they basically, and wisely imo, say that they're not gonna add ever-expanding stretch goal and stay focused and keep the game's scope as it is; and instead they'll use the additional money to make sure they don't run out of anything, bring in guest artists, attend events and festivals, etc.

Love the artstyle. Also love that their not overtly putting in stupid game mechanics in what's clearly a puzzle/exploration game. They really hit it out of the park with the atmosphere.

*raises hand* I really like the "Back To The Holler" track and have been listening to it over and over again. I don't think my old crappy PC can handle this game but I backed anyway. Looking forward to the OST and artwork. :)

Initial concept art. (Day)

(Night)

In the next few days we will finally have a Paypal option up for those who are reading this but can't back through Kickstarter. Admittedly it's a very small group of people who both haven't backed and are reading this. But just in case: now you know.

Update: Q&A Podcast + Why We Aren't Talking About Consoles

Ok, so let's talk consoles. Or rather let's talk about why we've haven't been talking about consoles. That's been the giant elephant in the room for most of the Kickstarter and we've been very up front about how things were up in the air. At this point we won't be announcing console ports before the end of the Kickstarter campaign. We've tried to be as transparent as possible about these kinds of things, so here's what's up:

Night In The Woods is still a ways off. We won't be releasing until 2015. As such, it's a bit early for us to promise a specific console port. We could very easily just slap another stretch goal down and say “we'll develop for ______!!!” but honestly this early on in development and this far from our release date all we'd be doing is just that - saying it. We've been in talks with folks about console ports and that's going to take a bit more time to iron out, especially since (as you may have noticed) things are a bit hectic for both we and a few major consoles this month. We'll be updating you all as we have updates to give. You've trusted us, and we want to respect that. No bluffing, no announcements just for hype. We'll announce our console port plans when we are sure of them and have deals in place. Until then, stay tuned and thanks for caring so much!

Platform-wise, PC, Mac and supported Linux builds are guaranteed. We will naturally be looking at Steam as our release date draws nearer, and will be providing Steam keys to backers. We'll also be looking at other distribution platforms which we'll announce later.

Seems to be sort of their nature as far as I can tell, let's hope for the best later on.
